Dutch tulips of an exceptional kind

New Cool Collective is only the name of the band. But who is forming the framework for the collective? Currently on stage: saxophonist Benjamin Herman, guitarist Rory Ronde, drummer Joost Kroon, percussionists Frank van Dok and Jos de Haas, pianist Willem Friede, bassist Leslie Lopez and trumpeter David Rockefeller.

New Cool Collective ist nur der Bandname. Doch wer bildet das Gerüst für das Kollektiv? Momentan stehen da auf der Bühne: der Saxofonist Benjamin Herman, der Gitarrist Rory Ronde, der Schlagzeuger Joost Kroon, die Perkussionisten Frank van Dok und Jos de Haas, der Pianist Willem Friede, der Bassist Leslie Lopez und der Trompeter David Rockefeller.

The band was founded in 1993 by Benjamin Herman and Graham Alles, who worked as a DJ in Amsterdam's Soul Kitchen. For the 8-member New Cool Collevtive (NCC), at that time jazz was not necessarily the main focus. They mixed boogaloo with Afrobeat, salsa and jazz. Their first releases in 1997 and 1998 - Soul Jazz Latin and More Soul Jazz Latin Flavors Nineties Vibe - clearly show this.

Ins Leben gerufen haben die Band 1993 Benjamin Herman und Graham Alles, der in der Amsterdamer Soul Kitchen als DJ tätig war. Für das 8-köpfige New Cool Collevtive (NCC) stand damals der Jazz nicht unbedingt im Vordergrund. Da wurde der Boogaloo mit Afrobeat, Salsa und Jazz gut durchgemischt. Dies verdeutlichen dann auch ihre ersten Veröffentlichungen 1997 und 1998 - Soul Jazz Latin und More Soul Jazz Latin Flavors Nineties Vibe.

This collective grew into a big band with 20 members, but this did not change the fact that their interpretations were not particularly well received by jazz purists. On the other hand, more and more young people who previously had only sporadic contact with jazz music suddenly came to the NCC's performances. Former jazz haters turned into an interested audience.

Zwischenzeitlich wuchs das Kollektiv zu einer Big Band mit 20 Mitgliedern heran, was jedoch nichts daran änderte, dass ihre Interpretationen bei Jazz-Puristen nicht sonderlich gut ankamen. Dafür kamen plötzlich immer mehr junge Leute zu den Auftritten des NCC, die zuvor nur sporadisch Kontakt zur Jazzmusik hatten. Aus ehemaligen Jazzhasser formierte sich ein interessiertes Publikum.

The double album "Trippin", produced with drum legend Tony Allen at sticks, was the final step towards jazz. In addition to countless live performances, two studio albums were released between 2006 and 2010 - such as "Out Of Office" and "Pachinko".

Mit dem Doppelalbum “Trippin”, bei dessen Produktion die Schlagzeug-Legende Tony Allen die Sticks in den Händen hielt, wurde der Schritt zum Jazz endgültig vollzogen. Neben unzählig vielen Live-Auftritten erschienen zwischen 2006 und 2010 noch zwei Studio-Alben – als da wären “Out Of Office” und “Pachinko”.

2021 on the subject of Best Album November at BANDCAMP could be read as follows about NCC: "It's all about the groove here. Crisp, fast melodies with punchy, rhythmic salvos. This is where the electricity comes from that makes jazz danceable."
In total, the New Cool Collective has now released 20 albums and collected awards like others dutch tulips.

2021 konnte bei BANDCAMP zum Thema Bestes Album November Folgendes über NCC lesen: “Hier dreht sich alles um den Groove. Knackig, schnelle Melodien mit druckvollen, rhythmischen Salven. Hier entsteht die Elektrizität, die den Jazz tanzbar werden lässt.”
Insgesamt hat das New Cool Collective inzwischen 20 Alben auf den Markt gebracht und Auszeichnungen eingesammelt wie manch anderer, holländische Tulpen.
