Jazz-Matinee – Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton

in Music2 years ago

When goodwill is simply not enough

Something special for the ears - but in both senses of the meaning.

Wynton Marsalis, one of the best trumpeters in the upper league of jazz, felt the need (it may remain his secret why and wherefore) to present Eric Clapton with a song selection to refit Clapton's masterpieces with the New Orleans jazz jacket.
So why not? After all, many popular music songs had already been given a completely new, more interesting coat of paint with a jazz arrangement.
In the introduction to Layla, Clapton also explains why he never ventured into jazz.
My opinion: It would have been better if he had left it at that!

Eric Clapton will not be a jazzier until he has been able to put his blues soul to rest and enter into the diversity of jazz. I don't keep statistics on how many jazz events I have organized and attended as a guest. But, I can assure you, it was by far more than I have tasted in culinary delicacies. However, I have very rarely seen jazz concerts where the musicians have to orientate themselves by a music sheet. There is no such thing as a completely prefabricated arrangement in jazz because at the same moment the freedom of the instrumentalist is castrated.

To me, Marsalis appears to be paralysed. He has no answer ready for the constant blues self-gratification trip of his guest. Instead of taking the reins of action into his hands, he lets Clapton act in his old, familiar guitar infatuation. Marsalis seems to have forgotten that here he has got to teach the ABCs of jazz to a pupil from the very first grade. The assessment of a music critic is fitting: his “musical vocabulary” is simply not enough to contribute anything substantial to the jazzy dialogues of the evening.

Johannes Waechter also comes to the conclusion for the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the “unusual” album shows that Clapton did well in this unfamiliar environment – but could not always keep up. The two protagonists, Marsalis and Clapton, also gave the impression of two musical heavyweights who had to make quite an effort to seem a little relaxed.

Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewin, on the other hand, takes an entirely different view: You could tell that here musicians were playing the music they loved and that their passion was contagious. Therefore, it is not difficult to enjoy this album. Norbert Neugebauer from Rocktimes.de also praised: "The album is fun if you have a soft spot for this old music, which does not sound antiquated here in any way, but very fresh. A top line-up in which neither Marsalis nor Clapton is the star and which lets 'The Good Times' roll very skilfully and with relish at a high level.

The Good Times‹ rollen lässt.

Whatever you like – but my recommendation: don't buy it!
I very rarely allow myself something like that at the jazz matinée. But even the exception sometimes belongs in the first row.

I just hope to be able to ask someone on stage next Sunday about whose works no two opinions are possible. Until then and stay healthy.

The greatest contribution of Wynton Marsalis was to recover the tradition of jazz in the early 1980's after a decade of jazz-rock, jazz fusion and smooth jazz, establishing the neo-bop school and bringing alive jazz again. His best works in my opinion: Think of One (1983), Black Codes (From the Underground) (1985) and Standard Time, Vol. 1 (1987).

But Clapton does not understand jazz. He is and remains an outsider who can only look respectfully at the stage from below.

But what devil drove him into the arms of Clapton?

Who knows? I don't think it's a good idea.

It was probably the worst idea Marsalis ever had. Clapton can't do any better because he doesn't understand jazz.
