When you look at the picture in this post you can see some rectangular netting objects with wooden sticks as supports to form the net into a rectangular box.
This object is named by the local community as "keuramba eungkôt" which comes from the Acehnese language if it means "fish breeding place" or if simplified as a place to raise fish that are kept from small to large in size.
Keuramba eungkôt or Fish breeding
This breeding tool has been around since 1996 and was created by a professional fisherman who had retired from a pawang or skipper named "Pawang Ma'e". He is a professional fisherman who has many trawl creations with various variations, he has created several works in the form of:
- Pukat darat
- Pukat Kreung
- Pukat udang
- Pukat langga
- Pukat gaweo
- and several other forms including Keuramba.
Initially, Keuramba was inspired by the experience of shrimp ponds which had experienced their peak since decades ago, but this situation changed because the temperature or water in the ponds experienced several diseases or some pond pests in the form of snails, crenk, and several other small pests. So that many shrimp and several other cultures died and failed to harvest.
When looking at the location of a river channel or tributary, the water is always changing and flowing, then the idea arises to keep the small fish in it until they become big and ready to be harvested. Then some of these objects were created to breed the fish in their habitat, but they are still in a natural process in their original location.
Precisely at the end of December 1996, Keuramba was shaped like a rectangular water container with a length of 5 meters and a height of 3 meters, shaped like a box. Ready to be used as a means of breeding fish seeds and ready to be cultivated.
The advantage
With the creation of fish Keuramba can save capital in fish farming, because the costs needed are not as big as the cost of shrimp ponds on land, this Keuramba only requires a net capital of a certain size with its shape or the characteristics that have been mentioned above, and just look for fish seeds in in the river channel and then released into Keuramba, while the bait or food is also not as difficult as shrimp ponds, Keuramba fish farmers only put wooden leaves that are taken on the plains and then put in Keuramba.
The fish in Keuramba also always enjoy fresh water which always goes along with the ebb and flow of the water in the ocean, so the fish in Keuramba never experience any disease and what needs to be taken care of is only their food.
Small fish seeds that are obtained in the location itself, such as:
- Grouper
- Red eye fish
- Fish red tail mark
- and several other types of reef fish.
Will experience a period of growing or ready to harvest by 1.5 or 2 kilograms. While the breeding period is 3 months and sometimes 4 months more depending on the fish species itself.
To this day, the fishing community whose location they live in around the river channel has been carrying out this activity since 1999 years ago by publishing the work of Pawang Ma'e as the main originator of Keuramba or natural fish breeding tools.
