Where are the winters of yesteryear?

How the flowers in my yard fight with this capricious winter. That's what I want to talk about now. Why do I call this winter capricious? Because she is truly capricious, undecided and changeable.

I want it, I don't want it, I compare it to the winters of yesteryear. Hence the famous question: "Where are the winters of yesteryear?"

What do I remember from my childhood? First of all, the winter lasted at least three months and once started it was winter until the end.

Now, in just fifty years, I have noticed major changes in the manifestation of the seasons, if the two transitional seasons, spring and autumn, seem to be more like what they were, winter has changed a lot.

I'm now talking about a temperate continental climate, in the northeastern part of Europe, in Romania. I do not know how it is in other parts of the world, if there are such obvious changes in climate. Changes due, no doubt, to global warming.

Returning to winter, in recent years it has obviously shortened and the winter parts mix with autumn and spring parts. If I collect the real winter days (with negative temperatures and snow) I think I can't collect more than one winter month a year!

Because of this, plants and animals, birds are confused and change their behavior. I will now talk about the plants in my little yard, plants that normally ended in life (that is, the perennials in a hibernation and the annuals simply died) at the beginning of December.

This year, only now in mid-January, winter has begun. It should have started in early December. The plants probably thought it would not be winter anymore and continued to bloom long after the usual date when they were covered in snow.

My little yard but especially the plants and flowers that are still standing and the way they try to withstand the winter conditions, meaning a little snow but, at worst, temperatures of minus 10-12 degrees Celsius.

The fountain was stopped so as not to freeze the water on the pipes and it became a decoration, helped by the plants with evergreen leaves.

Flowers that shouldn't be there anymore but are struggling to resist all this winter. These are very small flowers that smell of honey. They are very dear to me!

Now a flower that is accustomed to the cold, when the temperature is very low the flower seems severely affected but after the temperature warms up a little it miraculously recovers. It is called Helleborus (scientific name).

Other categories of plants are even less affected, I can say that they simply defy the cold and frost.

Plants evergreen leaves. They also do not seem to be affected by winter.

The fruits of some decorative shrubs are even more decorative now, in winter. These fruits are highly prized by blackbirds who eat them with pleasure.

Last, but not least, are the plants that bloom in early spring. They should be out of the ground by the end of February but they are already here. Snowdrops and Helleborus!

A memory of last summer, a small solar lamp. She is clinging to the branch of a Japanese maple tree and waiting to see the warm rays of the sun again!

img_0751.jpg

This is happening now in my yard, some plants that do not want to leave (ie to die) and other plants that want to come earlier, fooled by the undecided winter. Because now it is cold and freezing but it is expected that in a few days there will be positive temperatures again, up to 10 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, these alternating temperatures hurt the plants, if it had been a thicker blanket of snow it would have been much better. This would have protected all the plants.

I wanted to show what winter is like in the very small part of my garden. How global warming can be easily observed by global warming. These changes are expected to be more drastic soon.
