Excuse the seemingly ignorant question here. Do you take a color photograph and manipulate it into black and white in certain regions? I love the huge contrasts between the dark and color areas on your work. The center region really pops.

I usually work with multiple layers. 1 is indeed a B&W layer (the lower one), the number of other layers is depending on the selected colors and/or shapes I want to keep... Parts I don't need on the upper layers are deleted and set to transparent...
