Today I want to open a new chapter in my young light painter life. I've been carrying the idea around with me for ages. As is the case for many people, it is often a question of time and opportunity to implement the idea. Last Sunday it was time. For a November day it was super sunny and warm. Usually on days like this, I ride my wife Geane to a café on a tandem bike and we enjoy a cupcake with a cup of tea or coffee. This time we skipped the café and visited the Tatenhausen moated castle to start my experiment there. For this I packed my camera, a filter set, a tripod and a pocket mirror from Geane in the bike bag.
Heute möchte ich ein neues Kapitel in meinem jungen Lightpainterleben öffnen. Die Idee dazu trug ich schon ewig mit mir herum. Es ist, wie es vielen Menschen geht, oft eine Frage von Zeit und Gelegenheit die Idee umzusetzen. Am letzten Sonntag war es soweit. Für einen Novembertag war es super sonnig und warm. Gewöhnlich fahre ich an solchen Tagen gemeinsam mit meiner Frau Geane auf dem Tandem zu einem Café und wir genießen ein Törtchen zu einer Tasse Tee oder Kaffee. Diesmal ließen wir das Café aus und besuchten das Wasserschloss Tatenhausen, um dort mit meinem Experiment zu starten. Dafür packte ich meine Kamera, ein Filterset, ein Stativ und einen Taschenspiegel von Geane in die Fahrradtasche.

In the cover picture you can see the entrance portal of the castle, taken with a focal length of 35mm. The bright spots come from the pocket mirror, which I used to reflect the sun's rays towards the camera lens.
The picture below shows the same portal with 16mm focal length. The mirror was also used there.
Im Titelbild seht ihr das Eingangsportal vom Schloss, aufgenommen mit einer Brennweite von 35mm. Die hellen Punkte stammen vom Taschenspiegel, mit dem ich die Sonnenstrahlen in Richtung Kameraobjektiv reflektiert habe.
Das Bild unten zeigt das gleiche Portal mit 16mm Brennweite. Auch dort kam der Spiegel zum Einsatz.

The Challenge
My idea was to create a light painting in daylight without a flashlight. Of course I could use my OLYMPUS E-M1MarkII for that. That would simplify the challenge, but I found it unsportsmanlike. In the picture below you can see how I prepared the set with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II.
Meine Idee war, ein Lightpainting bei Tageslicht ohne Taschenlampe zu erstellen. Natürlich könnte ich meine OLYMPUS E-M1MarkII dafür verwenden. Das würde die Challenge vereinfachen, fand ich aber unsportlich. Im Bild unten seht ihr, wie ich das Set mit einer Canon EOS 6D Mark II vorbereitete.
Making Off
To enable long exposure times in daylight, I put three filters in front of the lens. An ND1000, an ND64 and a polarizing filter for the beautiful blue sky and the reflection in the water. This allowed me to expose for over 5 minutes and move through the frame without being caught by the camera myself. In the picture below you can see how I use the mirror to reflect the sunlight directly onto the lens. This is how the bright dots are created.
Um bei Tageslicht lange Belichtungszeiten zu ermöglichen, setzte ich drei Filter vor das Objektiv. Einen ND100, einen ND64 und für den herrlich blauen Himmel und die Spiegelung im Wasser einen Polfilter. Damit konnte ich über 5 Minuten belichten und mich durch das Bild bewegen, ohne dass ich selbst von der Kamera aufgenommen wurde. Im Bild unten seht ihr, wie ich mit dem Spiegel das Sonnenlicht direkt auf das Objektiv reflektiere. So entstehen die hellen Punkte.
The Forest
I prepared the same set in the Tatenhauser forest. There was significantly less light there, so I removed the ND64 filter. The procedure was the same as described above.
Das gleiche Set bereitete ich im Tatenhauser Wald vor. Dort war bedeutend weniger Licht, also entfernte ich den ND64 Filter. Die Vorgehensweise war die gleiche wie oben beschrieben.

The Lake
Unfortunately, the procedure with the small pocket mirror did not work at the lake. In the picture below you can see me in the middle of the picture. The camera was 100m away on the opposite bank. I would have needed a larger mirror for this set.
Am See funktionierte das Verfahren mit dem kleinen Taschenspiegel leider nicht. Im Bild unten seht ihr mich in der Mitte des Bildes. Die Kamera stand in 100m Entfernung an der gegenüberliegenden Uferseite. Für dieses Set hätte ich einen größeren Spiegel benötigt.

The Castle
Tatenhausen Castle was built in 1540 on the foundations of Hoberg Castle from the mid-14th century and is surrounded by forests. In my opinion, moated castles are always a nice photo motif. There are other moated castles in the vicinity, such as the moated castle of Holtfeld and the castle of Brincke. A trip with the bike and the camera in the luggage is worthwhile.
Das Schloss Tatenhausen wurde 1540 auf den Grundmauern der Burg Hoberg aus der Mitte des 14. Jahrhundert errichtet und ist von Wäldern umgeben. Wasserschlösser sind, wie ich finde, immer ein schönes Fotomotiv. In der näheren Umgebung befinden sich weitere Wasserschlösser, wie Wasserschloß Holtfeld und das Schloss Brincke. Ein Ausflug mit dem Fahrrad und der Kamera im Gepäck lohnt sich.

Of course, you can also use this technique to draw lines. I have to move the mirror and keep the reflection on the lens. This is difficult and will be one of my next challenges.

Natürlich kann man mit Hilfe dieser Technik auch Linien ziehen. Dabei muss ich den Spiegel bewegen und die Reflexion auf dem Objektiv halten. Das ist schwierig und wird eine meiner nächsten Challenges sein.
