With recent illness and lack of a car due to it being in a workshop for a few weeks, I feel like I've neglected Hive a little bit. I'm getting better now and have my car returned and repaired! I feel like I'm ready to get back out in the dark to shoot some more stuff. I've missed it!
I like to post only new stuff or write an article to Hive with a new angle and use older images to demonstrate a point or a purpose. So after a few weeks off with no new photography, I thought it may be a good idea to use some of my "old shit" and use my favourite Photoshop filter, the Oil Paint filter.
For the record, I don't normally post anything "Photoshopped" and everything I normally do is shot in one photographuc exposure.
Dopamine Paint
This was originally a lens and tripod swap image shot in one photographic exposure. I liked the colours and applying the Oil Paint more than once can yield a wild result.
Spinkhill Nights
A recently discovered abandoned railway tunnel makes a great location for lightpainting. Here I originally used a full frame fisheye lens with a kinetic movement of the camera for the pink stripe across the frame.
Painting Windmills
I'm a big fan of star trail photography which involves shooting a series of 30 second images and stacking them in Photoshop to make a trail appear in the sky. Applying the Oil Paint filter only adds to the effect!
Old and New Power
This is one of my favourite images looking towards a coal fired power station with a windmill in the frame. I used a longer focal length to compress perspective and the miller had lit up the mill perfectly.
Oily Tank Space
Earlier this year I got the chance to shoot models in a giant water tank. The colours and lighting reminded me of famous works by various famous painters. The oil paint filter doesn't work that well with faces but I think I just about got away with it here!
An oily explosion in a paint factory
Another camera rotation image originally shot in one photographic exposure. I managed to remotely change the colours on an RGB LED light panel behind the model stood in the frame. I used a couple smoke pellets during the exposure and the continuous light from the panel caught the smoke for these wild range of colours.
Chips in Oil
I've been a big fan of lightpainting circuit boards for a few years and application of the oil paint filter seemed to work with this one quite well. I did try this filter on a few other circuit board photos but not quite as nice as this one.
Fractal Fry Up
Using a fractal filter in the dark with a smoke pellet. The original image by itself wasn't my best but with the application of the oil paint filter, the image takes on a new dimension.
LaserMax Lubricated
If I was a trendy twenty something dude in the 1990's I would have had this image on my bachelor pad wall. Unfortunately I found this circuit board 30 years too late and my days as a trendy dude are long since departed!!
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.

Great to read that you are well. I missed your posts.
Thanks mate, I need to get out in the dark and shoot some new stuff to write about! :-)
Can't wait to see the results.
Love the explosion factory!
And thanks for pointing out that a filter over a lightpainting is not a crime 👍 I am so for the creative process and this complents it beautifull! Lightpainting to the world!

Thanks mate, I like the factory explosion too. I captured the original in one exposure; I think I would have found that difficult to achieve in post processing, my Photoshop skills aren't that great :-)
Wow... Impressive!
