Welcome Dear Photography Lovers
Bienvenidos Queridos Amantes de la Fotografía
The world of plants is so vast and amazing that it always surprises me pleasantly, even with the most everyday things. As is the case of the plant that I will share with you today, in the places where I have lived it has always been part of the nature that surrounds me. In urban areas, it is very common to see them in the gardens of houses and residential complexes, decorating green areas in parks or public squares. Even when traveling along some extra-urban roads it is common to find this plant growing wild as a weed.
Popularly known as “Platanito”, “Platanillo”, Red Alpidia, Red Ginger, this species native to Malaysia, has been scientifically identified with the name Alpinia purpurata. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is one of the 230 species of the genus Alpinia.
Its ornamental value, easy reproduction and predisposition to develop as a weed, has contributed to the fact that, at present, this phanerogamous plant has managed to naturalize in all tropical areas of the planet. Although it grows best in a humid, partially shaded environment, it often adapts satisfactorily when exposed to full sun. On the other hand, what this herbaceous plant cannot withstand is exposure to low temperatures.
As for the general characteristics of this herbaceous perennial plant, the aromatic stems are rhizomatous, that is, they are subway, develop horizontally and have buds from which new plants can grow. On the other hand, its slender erect stems, similar to those of reed plants, reach a height of approximately 2.5 meters. Its large, shiny, lanceolate leaves are arranged opposite each other on the stem, their color is intense green and they measure about 70 cm long and 20 cm wide.
A curious detail about this plant and that many do not know, is that the attractive bright red erect spike, and that at first glance we identify as its flower, is no such thing. It turns out that it is actually the inflorescence, which can reach almost 50 cm long by about 8 cm wide and is made up of a kind of bright red petals waxy appearance, which are actually bracts. Their main purpose is to protect the small and usually imperceptible white flowers that emerge from within, from predators and other dangers.
The Alpinia purpurata is not only widely cultivated in the ornamental field, to be used as an ornamental plant in gardens and public spaces, as I mentioned at the beginning. In addition, the exotic beauty and longevity of its flower spike, which can extend up to about 3 weeks, makes it extremely attractive in the field of floristry. And as another curious fact about this plant, its leaves, in some places are also often used as food wrapping.
As for its reproduction, as I briefly mentioned at the beginning, it is mainly through rhizomes, which are capable of developing new plants very efficiently. However, although it is rare, this plant also produces fruits, in the form of capsules of approximately 3 cm in diameter, which inside contain tiny black seeds.
To finish the subject of the propagation of this plant, a behavior that called my attention is that when the small flowers dry up, they tend to generate numerous seedlings. As these seedlings increase in size, the inflorescence becomes heavier and heavier, which inevitably ends up inclining the stem until it touches the ground, at which point the seedlings take advantage of this to take root, giving rise to new plants.
Well, dear readers, for the moment we have come to the end, I hope that the images that I share this time were to your liking, as well as the brief description that I made about this interesting and beautiful herbaceous plant. I can only say goodbye, sending you many blessings for you and your loved ones.
