Wrocław, the fourth-largest city in Poland, has a perk that drew me to visit for an extended weekend. It is much closer to Prague than other popular Polish destinations such as Krakow, Warsaw, or Gdańsk that came to mind. Throughout its history, Wrocław and the surrounding region of Silesia have belonged to several empires, including the Bohemian, Austrian, Prussian, and Polish. Despite this, one defining feature has endured for centuries and continues to shape the city today: a deep-rooted Catholic faith. In this post, I will take you on a tour of some of Wrocław's most famous churches.
My tour must begin at Ostrów Tumski, literally the Cathedral Island, which is no longer a small island due to regulations of the Odra River and changes in its course. Instead, it is now part of a much larger island that consists of several city districts. However, the area has retained its name, which dates back to the 11th century when the first cathedral was erected there. In 1315, the island was sold to the church and became a local center of religious activity. Although the island now belongs to the city of Wrocław, many buildings are still maintained by the Catholic Church, and it still is the seat of the Archbishop of Wrocław.
Wroclaw (či česky Vratislav, což mi ale z nějakého důvodu nejde přes prsty) je čtvrté největší polské město. Oproti jiným populárním destinacím u našich severních sousedů, jako jsou Krakov, Varšava nebo Gdaňsk, má jednu velkou výhodu. Z Prahy je to relativně kousek, takže je to fajn cíl prodlouženého víkendu. Stejně jako Slezsko, ve kterém se město nachází, i Wroclaw patřila během staletí k mnoha různým říším. Dokonce i Českému království. Ale bez ohledu na to, zda ve městě vlály vlajky rakouské, pruské, české nebo polské, Wroclaw byla vždy velmi pobožná. A katolická církev udává tón i dnes. Proto vás vezmu na procházku po známých kostelích.
Začít nemůžu nikde jinde než na místě zvaném Ostrów Tumski, doslova Katedrálním ostrově. Už dávno to není samostatný malý ostrov, v důsledku regulace toku Odry se z něj stala součást mnohem většího ostrova, na kterém je hned několik dalších městských čtvrtí. I tak si ale místo uchovalo svůj název, který pravděpodobně pochází už z 11. století, kdy na ostrově vyrostla první kamenná katedrála. V roce 1315 byl ostrov prodán církvi a stalo se z něj její mocenské centrum. I když dnes pozemky patří převážně městu, katolická církev má stále ve správě většinu budov. A je tu i sídlo wroclawského arcibiskupa.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Wrocław, also known simply as the Wrocław Cathedral, has been the most important church on the island since construction began in 1272. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone several reconstructions, resulting in distinctive architectural features that reflect the Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the cathedral, a mass was being held inside, so I was only able to take a quick picture from the entrance.
Katedrála Sv. Jana Křtitele, nebo jen Wroclawská katedrála, je nejdůležitějším kostelem na ostrově. Její výstavba začala už v roce 1272 a během staletí byla mnohokrát přestavována. Takže jde o klasický mix různých architektonických stylů, zejména gotiky, baroka a renesance. Bohužel jsme přišli, když se zrovna uvnitř konala bohoslužba, a tak mám jen rychlou fotku od vchodu.

Another stunning example of Gothic religious architecture is the Saint Maria of the Sand Church, located on a neighboring island. I like the night picture better.

The Old Town
Wrocław feels like a city of churches, with many scattered throughout the Old Town. I even discovered an evangelical church amidst the Catholic ones. But let's start with the most iconic church in the city center – St Mary Magdalene Church, which is famous for its "Witch Bridge" that connects its two towering spires. Climbing the stairs to the top is a bit spooky, with the colorful neon lights and eerie sound effects adding to the experience, but the breathtaking view of the city below from the top of the towers is worth it.
Wroclav je rozhodně město plné kostelů, i na Starém městě jich je plno. Potkal jsem i jeden evangelický, ale k tomu se dostanu později. Začít totiž musíme kostelem Sv. Máří Magdalény, který je známý i díky svému "Můstku čarodějnic", který spojuje jeho dvě věže. Cesta nahoru je trochu zvláštní, osvětlená barevnými neony a doprovázená divnými zvykovými efekty. Ale výhled na město pod vámi stojí za to.
The towering spire of St Elizabeth's Church used to soar to an impressive height of 130 meters, or 427 feet. Although it is now lower, it was difficult to capture properly.
Štíhlá věž kostela Sv. Alžběty byla kdysi úctyhodných 130 metrů vysoká. Dnes je o poznání nižší, ale i tak není snadné kostel i s věží hezky vyfotit.

Kostel Sv. Vojtěcha. Ano, jeho patronem je opravdu Sv. Vojtěch, biskup pražský.
I was lucky enough to take this photo of St Dorothea Church. The sun was shining behind it and through the windows. I like the effect it made.
Měl jsem kliku a udělal tuhle zajímavou fotku kostela Sv. Doroty. Slunce bylo na druhé straně a prosvítalo skrze jeho okna. Výsledný efekt mě hodně baví.
And finally, here's the promised Evangelical Church of St. Christopher. It is a Lutheran church nowadays.
No a na závěr tu mám slíbený evangelický kostel Sv. Kryštofa. Dnes patří Luteránům.
