Some people look for geocaches; some catch Pokémons others are avid train spotters. Wroclaw, however, offers something specific. Something Walt Disney would love. Hundreds of gnomes or dwarves are scattered all over the city. The gnomes have been conquering the streets of Wroclaw since 2005 when the first ones appeared. They commemorate a far-left anti-communist movement that rose to popularity in Wroclaw in the 1980s. Although the movement called itself the Orange Alternative, its members actually painted and sprayed primitive dwarf sketches and graffiti rather than fruits. Yet I believe that oranges all over the city would be way more boring than dwarves in the streets.
Anyway, I am not really sure if there’s something like an official gnome-committee or any other authority that approves new designs and locations. Still, many dwarves seem to refer to a certain business. They’re either just regulars in there or the leftist movement memorial commercialized over the years. And it obviously serves as a wacky tourist attraction rather than a serious memorial. There’s a semi-official map for those who find the systematic search for dwarves more appealing than running into them by chance, and even a mobile app. I prefer to be surprised, though, so I didn’t use them.
Někdo hledá kešky, jiný loví pokémony a další je nadšený šotouš. Ale ve Wroclawi na vás krom všeho uvedeného čeká ještě něco speciálního. Něco, z čeho by obr z pohádky Dlouhý, široký a krátkozraký zešílel. Navíc se zdá, že měl pravdu. Trpaslíci ve Wroclawi všude vlezou a rychle se tam množí. Dnes jich je tam několik stovek a narazíte na ně prakticky všude. První se v ulicích objevili v roce 2005. Původně šlo o památku levicového antikomunistického hnutí, které ve městě v osmdesátých letech minulého století získalo na popularitě. A i když si hnutí říkalo Pomerančová alternativa, po městě kreslili a sprejovali trpaslíky a ne ovoce. Což je vlastně fajn, protože mít ulice plné pomerančů by byla mnohem větší nuda.
Každopádně si nejsem jistý, jestli existuje nějaká oficiální trpasličí komise nebo jiný orgán, který by schvaloval nové přírůstky do ulic a jejich umístění. Ale spousta trpaslíků je celkem jednoznačně spjatá s podnikem, u kterého stojí. Buďto to jsou štamgasti, nebo se památník levicového hnutí během let trochu komercionalizoval. Kromě toho jde pochopitelně o veselou turistickou atrakci. Existuje i polooficiální mapa, a dokonce i mobilní aplikace. To kdybyste dávali přednost systematickému hledání před náhodnými setkáními v ulicích. Mě bavilo trpaslíky odhalovat, takže jsem nepoužil ani jednu.

Asi nejpopulárnější dvojice trpaslíků je na vyhlídce Mostu čarodějnic, který spojuje dvě věže kostela Sv. Máří Magdalény.
The gnomes usually have names, or maybe just nickname as they usually refer to their appearance or props. Yet some represent real people, like this one.
Trpaslíci vesměs mají jména, nebo možná spíš přezdívky, které vycházejí z jejich vzhledu nebo rekvizit. Ale někteří zosobňují skutečné osoby, jako třeba tenhle.
A great example of a "commercial" gnome – this one is in front of Złoty Pies brewery. The name literally means Golden Dog. I am going to write down a #beersaturday post about it.

That's really cute to have all those gnomes scattered around the city. Do you know why they're associated with the anti communist movement? I think people should start the same movement in all the commie countries
From what I learned when I was doing my research for the article, the Orange Alternative was rather an avant-garde movement than a political one because you could be persecuted for your political stance way more likely than for being an alternative artist (yet you could be persecuted for that either). So the movement claimed that they were in opposition to the establishment, but focused on painting and spraying gnomes with orange hats across the city. People knew what they meant, so did the police, and that was it. The police wouldn’t do much as any action would mean the establishment admitted that there actually was an opposition and not just a bunch of art freaks.
It may sound weird but it makes perfect sense in a country from the wrong side of the Iron Curtain :) We have similar nonsense stories in our modern history.

I know what you mean about articulating a message through other means when you're being silenced by big brother. That happened in China at the end of last year when people held up blank sheets of A4 paper in protest of the zero COVID policy and still being in lockdown when the rest of the world was living a normal live again.
But I definitely like to the gnomes better. I also believe there are many of them in some cities in Ukraine, I wonder if it stemmed from the same movement.

It must have been very interesting to see statues of gnomes everywhere, each one representing something and also with the rust that reflect that they have been in that place for many years, when I was little I read a lot a book fairy tales that was like a biography made by merlin, in this book they talked about many creatures of ancient cultures, in those pages were the dwarves, gnomes and elves, since then I have become a fan of those things and I have always had the dream of going to a place where these stories are the main culture.
It was fun in the first place. A bit like playing hide and seek with them except they weren’t actually hiding ;)

Heh, čekal jsem, že dojde i na čistě trpasličí post :) Jedna z věcí, kterými je Wroclaw proslulá. Když už jsi zmínil i ty fotbalové, byli jste se podívat i na stadion Slasku? Je nádherný, jeden z nejmodernějších v Evropě... Opavský fotbalový klub má se Slaskem družbu, takže naši fanoušci jsou tam jako doma. A jejich fans zase jezdí k nám :) Jak se vám vlastně Wroclaw celkově líbila?

Na stadionu jsme nebyli a Wroclaw se mi i tak hodně líbila. Je to takové tak akorát malé/velké město. Přijde mi dost kulturní.
Tak to jsem rád. Jsem zvědavý, co budete říkat na Krakow. Ten je o něco větší. Ofiko 800 tisíc, ale se všemi těmi ukrajinskými uprchlíky, kteří se tam během války přesunuli, má teď určitě kolem milionu obyvatel. Krakow je (multi)kulturní opravdu hodně a navíc má díky své historii i takovou dost specifickou atmosféru...
Krakow už je spíš na let, polské dálnice jsou ještě větší peklo než ty české :) naštěstí se i tam dá letět za pár šupů.
Mimochodem, díky za tipáka.
Z Prahy asi jo no... Z Ostravy jsou to dvě hoďky Studentem, takže pohoda. Jednou jsme to tuším dali i za hoďku a půl. Na Krakow by ale víkend byl málo, tam by to chtělo aspoň tak 4 až 5 dní a to jen na to nejzákladnější...
Kam se hrabou trpaslíci kolem českých hranic ve vietnamských tržnicích.
To je jich tam stále tolik? Já myslel, že je to spíš relikt minulosti.
Vídám dost často Č. Velenice, Ž. Rudu, Studánky, Strážný. Tam všude ještě "sádrovci" straší.
