Outdoor life

As many of you may know, we live in the countryside, kind of in the middle of nowhere. And that outdoor life means that we are not built in like many others. We have space around us, we still have nature around us and that brings peace, but also a lot of life.

With a lot of life you should not think of a busy environment where people trip over each other as is common in larger cities today. No, the life I'm talking about here is mainly filled by animals.

Life in the Garden

Although I have not yet managed to photograph them nicely, we do regularly see deer walking across the fields opposite our house, recently a wild rabbit was completely unexpected sitting next to the gas tank next to our house when we came out in the morning to let the dogs out. When my partner went to prepare the planters for the weekend to be filled with young cultivated plants, we found a frog in one of the containers. We just put it near our small pond in the side garden. And now that I've arrived at the side garden ... it's really full of life.

We have made many bird feeding places and that has now resulted in me being surrounded by the chirping of birds all day long. The titmice, sparrows, blackbirds, robins, wagtails, starlings and swallows chirp loudly and let us enjoy their song every day.

Sparrows are so cute

And one of those cute sparrows has developed a very special routine since we bought a new car. Apparently he likes our new white Suzuki Alto better than the older dark red one we had before. Since we got the new car, this sparrow has been sitting on the car mirror on the driver's side every day. He regularly hangs from the bottom edge of the mirror with his paws to view his own reflection. Then sit on top of the mirror again. And then he sits next to the mirror on the window. He spends hours on this.

Waiting all day long for the car to come back

Every morning when my partner wants to get into the car he flies away from the mirror to the nearest cherry tree standing there and sits there waiting. Occasionally he flies onto the gate to wait there, and it may sound strange, but waiting is really what he does. Waiting for the car to come back. From the moment my partner brings the car back home, it takes no more than fifteen minutes, and then he has returned to his favorite spot. The mirror on the driver's side. He only wants the left wing mirror, the right wing mirror is not interesting for him.

He is extremely commited

Now you might be thinking, "But why on earth would that little sparrow be so fascinated by our car mirror?" We suspect that the sparrow sees its own reflection in the mirror, and thinks it is another bird! I read somewhere that birds play with mirrors, and that they can even see their reflection as a buddy. Birds also seem to be able to use mirrors to update their plumage. And yes, it also seems that some birds fight with a mirror image. We don't know what it is in this case, but whatever it is, the little sparrow is very committed to his routine.

And this little sparrow reminded me again how important it is to enjoy the little things of everyday life, the simple but beautiful moments that are there every day. If you just want to see it.

Few fun facts

And then we have now talked about sparrows in your garden, since we have so many sparrows in our garden, I have of course observed them. Very fun to do! And what I didn't know, google could fill in for me. So here are some facts about sparrows:

  • Did you know that sparrows are actually very social and like to live in groups? They even have their own hierarchy with males with the brightest feathers having the highest status.

  • Sparrows love seeds, but they also eat insects and spiders. That makes them great natural pest controllers in your garden!

  • Sparrows can live up to 13 years, but the average lifespan is about 5 years. So, if you regularly see a sparrow in your garden, it could very well be the same one!

What I'm especially curious about now, have you ever seen a loyal, focused bird that repeats its routine day in and day out?
