American Marten (Martes americana), also known as a Pine Marten, in the snow on Hudson Bay Mountain near Smithers in Northern British Columbia. Martens normally eat small mammals such as squirrels and rodents. They are however related to the wolverine and capable of hunting much larger snowshoe hares and marmots.
I was lucky enough to see this guy out of the corner of my eye while I was snowboarding. He ran down a tree well; so I boarded over, took my backpack off, got my camera out, changed out the wide angle lens for the 400mm, and waited. After sitting there quietly for a few minutes he then popped his head up again. Taken with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II and Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM at ISO 1600, 400.0 mm, f/6.3, 1/1000s .

Great shot Robert! Also interesting settings - I've never done wildlife photography but I guess you raised the ISO that high to have a high Shutter Speed to avoid any movements, right? :D
Yes that's correct. You need to high very high shutter speed with wildlife if you want to freeze their movement. High ISO is not something to be afraid of with a full frame camera.

That is such a gorgeous shot, Robert - I actually gasped a bit when I saw the thumbnail on Twitter & had to come right over! I especially love the snow coming off its paws, so you get that action shot vibe. A few years back, I was lucky enough to have a long-tailed weasel (with its white winter coat) pose for me, but your Canon beat out my poor old Nikon for clarity. Thanks for sharing this awesome capture!
Thanks. I think its more about lens sharpness then camera. Nikkon make some very sharp lenses but the Canon 100-400mm mk II is an amazing lens.
