Hoy seguimos hablando acerca de esta serie de temas relacionados con la fotografía y de como a través de ellos podemos mejorar nuestro desempeño fotográfico. Ya hemos hablado del triángulo de exposición, recientemente lo hicimos con los balances de blancos y hoy toca el turno del que yo considero de los más importantes: ¿las fotos se hacen en RAW o JPEG?...
Today we continue talking about this series of topics related to photography and how through them we can improve our photographic performance. We have already talked about the exposure triangle, recently we did it with the white balances and today it is the turn of what I consider to be the most important: are the photos taken in RAW or JPEG? ...
Lo primero que hay que decir es que estas opciones obviamente están presentes en nuestras cámaras profesionales para que así podamos decidir que formato utilizar, todo dependerá de tu modelo de cámara, capacidad de memoria que tengan y que tanto quieran trabajar las fotos al momento de la edición.
The first thing to say is that these options are obviously present in our professional cameras so that we can decide which format to use, everything will depend on your camera model, memory capacity they have and how much they want to work on the photos at the time of the edition.
No podemos comenzar esta publicación sin antes tocar brevemente que son cada uno de estos formatos.
We cannot begin this publication without first briefly touching on what each of these formats are.
- Formato RAW.
Este es un formato el cual comprime las fotos pero sin que exista ningún tipo de perdida en su información, como podría ser la captación de colores, contrastes, luces, sombras, etc. Lo que quiero decir con todo esto es que a la hora de editar o revelar nuestras fotografías vamos a poder contar con mucha más flexibilidad y hasta mejor calidad. En otras palabras, la foto la vamos a tener 100% original.
This is a format which compresses the photos without there being any type of loss in their information, such as the capture of colors, contrasts, lights, shadows, etc. What I mean by all this is that when it comes to editing or developing our photos, we will be able to have much more flexibility and even better quality. In other words, the photo is going to be 100% original.
- Formato JPEG.
Cuando hablamos de fotos en JPEG es todo lo contrario al RAW, es un formato donde hay muchas perdidas de información. ¿Qué quiere decir esto? - pues que cuando hacemos una foto en JPEG nuestras cámaras realizan una serie de ajustes de forma automática que pueden "dañar" nuestras capturas.
When we talk about photos in JPEG, it is the opposite of RAW, it is a format where there are many losses of information. What does this mean? - Well, when we take a photo in JPEG, our cameras make a series of adjustments automatically that can "damage" our captures.
Estos ajustes son la saturación, nitidez, balance de blancos y el contraste. Lo malo de esto es que estos ajustes quedan adheridos de forma definitiva en nuestras fotos sin poder recuperar lo que fue la toma original.
These adjustments are saturation, sharpness, white balance, and contrast. The downside of this is that these settings are permanently attached to our photos without being able to recover what was the original shot.
Ahora, vamos a hablar un poco de las ventajas y desventajas de cada uno de estos formatos y así vemos en que se diferencian.
Now, we are going to talk a little about the advantages and disadvantages of each of these formats and thus we see how they differ.
- Ventajas del RAW. // Advantages of RAW.
Como dije hay más posibilidad de captar un mejor rango dinámico, que no es más que la cantidad de señales que nuestra cámara nos pueda ofrecer. Mayor facilidad a la hora de revelar la foto ya que al estar totalmente original será más sencillo ajustar todos los parámetros necesarios.
As I said there is more possibility of capturing a better dynamic range, which is nothing more than the amount of signals that our camera can offer us. Easier to develop the photo since being totally original will be easier to adjust all the necessary parameters.
Y la ventaja más importante para mi es la referente al color, en RAW los colores quedan tal cual los capta la cámara, entiéndase que no pasan por ningún filtro o ajuste predeterminado.
And the most important advantage for me is that of color, in RAW the colors are just as the camera captures them, it is understood that they do not go through any filter or default setting.
- Desventajas de RAW. // Disadvantages of RAW.
El punto en contra del RAW es que sus archivos son muchísimos más pesados que los JPEG por lo que necesitarás, como ya comenté, tarjetas de memorias con más capacidad de almacenamiento. Con este tema del peso también influye el tiempo de procesado de las fotos el cual será más lento y por último hay que decir que si no se aplica un buen revelado el resultado puede que no sea muy convincente y nítido.
The point against RAW is that its files are much heavier than JPEGs so you will need, as I already mentioned, memory cards with more storage capacity. With this issue of weight, the processing time of the photos also influences which will be slower and finally it must be said that if a good development is not applied, the result may not be very convincing and sharp.
- Ventajas del JPEG. // Advantages of JPEG.
Lógicamente al conocer las características de RAW sabemos que es un formato muy pesado y esa es la mayor diferencia. En JPEG los archivos son muchos menos pesado, hasta más de la mitad que uno RAW lo que facilita el almacenaje y la capacidad de enviar o compartir algunas fotos.
Logically, knowing the characteristics of RAW we know that it is a very heavy format and that is the biggest difference. In JPEG the files are much less heavy, up to more than half that of RAW, which facilitates storage and the ability to send or share some photos.
Además de que si no sabes o no manejas los temas de edición o revelado estos archivos te pueden ayudar ya que, como fue dicho anteriormente, aplica una serie de ajustes que dejan a la fotografía medianamente utilizable.
In addition to the fact that if you do not know or do not handle the issues of editing or development, these files can help you since, as was said before, it applies a series of adjustments that leave the photograph fairly usable.
- Desventajas de JPEG. // Disadvantages of JPEG.
Básicamente vienen siendo que no son fotos en RAW. Así de sencillo. Todo fotógrafo DEBERÍA disparar en RAW, sin excepciones. Las posibilidades de poder mejorar nuestro trabajo serán muchos mejores si utilizamos este formato.
Basically they are not RAW photos. As simple as that. Every photographer SHOULD shoot RAW, no exceptions. The possibilities of being able to improve our work will be much better if we use this format.
Como conclusión les puedo decir que en lo personal SIEMPRE disparo en RAW para poder tener un mayor margen a la hora de revelar mis fotos por lo que mi consejo es que traten en lo posible de hacer fotos en este formato, en el futuro lo agradecerán.
As a conclusion I can tell you that personally I ALWAYS shoot in RAW in order to have a greater margin when developing my photos so my advice is to try as much as possible to take photos in this format, in the future you will appreciate it.
