Together with @candelart, @stepko and Hans we wanted to pay a nightly visit to the abandoned swimming pool on Saturday. That wasn't exactly our best idea. On the way there from Berlin, it started snowing. Not just 4 or 5 flakes like in the German lowlands, but really like in the Alps or Siberia. When we arrived at the location, there was 30 centimetres of snow. Basically, that wouldn't be a big problem. However, the swimming pool is in the middle of the forest. Under the weight of the snow, thick branches broke off the trees every minute. All four of us are quite pain-free, but none of us wanted to get a thick branch on the skull. Besides, the masses of snow made it impossible to climb the diving tower. The probability of slipping and then falling into the 7 or 8 metre deep pool was far too high.

Gemeinsam mit @candelart, @stepko und Hans wollten wir am Sonnabend dem verlassenen Schwimmbad einen nächtlichen Besuch abstatten. Das war nicht gerade unsere beste Idee. Auf dem Weg von Berlin dorthin fing es an zu schneien. Nicht nur so 4 oder 5 Flocken wie sonst im deutschen Flachland, nein so richtig, wie in den Alpen oder in Sibirien. Als wir an der Location ankamen lagen dort 30 Zentimeter Schnee. So grundsätzlich wäre das kein großes Problem. Allerdings liegt das Schwimmbad mitten im Wald. Unter der Schneelast brachen im Minutentakt dicke Äste von den Bäumen ab. Wir sind alle vier recht schmerzbefreit, aber keiner von uns wollte einen dicken Ast auf den Schädel bekommen. Außerdem war es durch die Schneemassen unmöglich auf den Sprungturm zu klettern. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit auszurutschen und dann ins 7 oder 8 Meter tiefe Becken zu stürzen war viel zu hoch.

All of them had picture ideas for the diving tower. Hans had packed a ladder so that we could climb the tower. Disappointment spread. Besides the swimming pool, there are several UK20 hangars on the abandoned airfield. There we would have been protected from the snow.

Alle hatten Bildideen für den Sprungturm. Hans hatte eine Leiter eingepackt damit wir auf den Turm kletter können. Es machte sich Enttäuschung breit. Neben dem Schwimmbad gibt es noch mehrere UK20 Hangar auf dem verlassenen Flugplatz. Dort wären wir vor dem Schnee geschützt gewesen.

You can even drive directly to one of the hangars... that is, if there isn't 30 centimetres of snow. A rutted forest road leads there. When it's dry, the drive is a bit bumpy. If it's raining or snowing hard, I wouldn't drive on it. After all, the Japanese thin-sheet car is not an off-road vehicle.

Man kann sogar mit dem Auto direkt an einen der Hangar fahren... also, wenn nicht 30 Zentimeter Schnee liegen. Es führt dort ein ausgefahrener Waldweg hin. Wenn es trocken ist, ist die Fahrt etwas holprig. Bei starkem Regen oder Schnee würde ich den Weg nicht befahren. Das japanische Dünnblechauto ist schließlich kein Geländewagen.

So the hangar was not an option either. None of us wanted to trudge several hundred metres through the snow with our equipment.

Der Hangar war also auch keine Option. Keiner von uns hatte Bock, mehrere hundert Meter mit der Ausrüstung durch den Schnee zu stapfen.

And then there is this storage building there. The last time we visited in daylight and without snow, we didn't manage to explore the building. So now, then. It's better than going home empty-handed and being in a bad mood. You can get to the building directly by car, there is a concrete path leading to it. So even with 30 centimetres of snow, it wasn't much of a problem. We then explored the building. It's actually quite cool, but not quite as safe. The floor is missing in one area, the lift shaft is open and there are no stairs. Especially in the dark, there is a great danger of falling.

Und dann gibt es dort noch dieses Lagergebäude. Beim letzten Besuch bei Tageslicht und ohne Schnee haben wir es nicht geschafft, das Gebäude zu erkunden. Also dann eben jetzt. Besser als unverrichteter Dinge wieder nach Hause zu fahren und schlechte Laune zu haben. Man kommt direkt mit dem Auto an das Gebäude, es führt ein betonierter Weg dorthin. Das war also auch mit 30 Zentimeter Schnee kein großartiges Problem. Wir erkundeten dann das Gebäude. Eigentlich ganz cool, die Bude, allerdings nicht ganz so ungefährlich. In einem Bereich fehlt der Boden, der Fahrstuhlschacht steht offen, es fehlen Treppen. Gerade in der Dunkelheit ist die Gefahr groß abzustürzen.

We then picked out several rooms without any major danger spots. Hans and @candelart went to the basement, @stepko and I went to the hall on the first floor. I hope the colleagues will also show their pictures here quite soon. But first I took a picture in the snow. If there is snow, you can also do light painting in the snow. The camera was protected on the ramp of the warehouse. Snowflakes on the front lens don't come out so well.

Wir suchten uns dann mehrere Räume ohne große Gefahrenstellen aus. Hans und @candelart gingen in den Keller, @stepko und ich gingen in die Halle in der ersten Etage. Ich hoffe, die Kollegen zeigen ihre Bilder hier ebenfalls recht bald. Aber zuerst habe ich ein Bild im Schnee gemacht. Wenn schonmal Schnee liegt, kann man auch Light Painting im Schnee machen. Die Kamera stand geschützt auf der Rampe des Lagerhauses. Schneeflocken auf der Frontlinse kommen nicht so gut.

Here you can see the first attempt. Unfortunately, my shadow is visible in the picture. I had underestimated the light pollution in combination with the highly reflective snow. I positioned myself, @stepko triggered the camera and then came running to me. That took about 40 seconds. This time is already enough to make my shadow visible. So we changed the plan for the second attempt, which you can see at the top. @stepko mounted a radio remote trigger on the camera and then triggered when he started peeing in the snow. I then shone the beam into the frame with the Ryus Lightpainter torch and yellow colour filter. In the second step, I then illuminated the snow in front of @stepko. Then I illuminated the snowy forest with the Emisar D18.

Hier seht ihr den ersten Versuch. Leider ist mein Schatten im Bild zu sehen. Ich hatte die Lichtverschmutzung in Kombination mit dem stark reflektierenden Schnee unterschätzt. Ich stellte mich an die Position, @stepko löste die Kamera aus und kam dann zu mir gelaufen. Das hat ungefähr 40 Sekunden gedauert. Diese Zeit genügt schon, um meinen Schatten sichtbar zu machen. Also änderten wir den Plan für den zweiten Versuch, den ihr ganz oben sehen könnt. @stepko montierte einen Funkfernauslöser an die Kamera und löste dann aus, als er anfing in den Schnee zu pinkeln. Ich leuchtete dann mit der Ryus Lightpainter Taschenlampe und gelben Farbfilter den Strahl ins Bild. Im zweiten Schritte beleuchtete ich dann den Schnee vor @stepko. Danach leuchtete ich den verschneiten Wald mit der Emisar D18 aus.

After looking at the picture on the camera display, our mood suddenly improved. 😂🤣 The evening was saved. After a break, we did some light paintings inside the hall. These will be in the next post.

Nachdem wir das Bild auf dem Kameradisplay betrachtet hatten, besserte sich unsere Laune schlagartig. 😂🤣 Der Abend war gerettet. Nach einer Pause machten wir dann noch ein paar Light Paintings im Innern der Halle. Diese gibt es dann im nächsten Beitrag.

Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
