START THE FIRE
We shot the Phoenix last weekend during our trip to the Malzfabrik with @marlasinger666, @stepko, @candelart, Hans and Dominic. Marla operated the camera and I did the light painting. First we used a stencil to paint the phoenix into the picture. I lit the stencil with a bundle of black glass fibres and a red Convoy S2+. Then I lit the room with the Emisar D18, lit the two concrete parts at the bottom with the blue Convoy S2+ and painted the fire into the picture. I will explain how I did this below.
Den Phönix haben wir am letzten Wochenende während unseres Ausfluges in die Malzfabrik mit @marlasinger666, @stepko, @candelart, Hans und Dominic aufgenommen. Marla hat die Kamera bedient und ich habe das Light Painting gemacht. Zuerst haben wir mit einer Schablone den Phönix ins Bild gemalt. Die Schablone habe ich mit einem Bündel schwarzer Glasfasern und einer roten Convoy S2+ beleuchtet. Danach habe ich den Raum mit der Emisar D18 ausgeleuchtet, die beiden Betonteile unten mit der blauen Convoy S2+ beleuchtet und das Feuer ins Bild gemalt. Wie ich das gemacht habe erkläre ich weiter unten.

The most obvious idea is certainly to use fire to represent fire. However, this is sometimes not so easy, mostly real fire does not look as much as one would wish. There is often a high proportion of blue light in the fire. Fire also often changes very quickly in brightness and appearance. So it is very difficult to control. Apart from that, fire is also dangerous. There is the danger of burning down the forest in high summer or ruining the model's hairstyle with it. In the pictures of the fire artist Anja you can see quite well what I mean. The longer the fire tool burns, the weaker the light traces become. But in my opinion they look better because there is no blue part in the fire anymore.
Die naheliegenste Idee ist sicher Feuer zu benutzen um Feuer darzustellen. Das ist allerdings zuweilen nicht so einfach, meist sieht echtes Feuer gar nicht so sehr aus wie man sich das wünschen würde. Oft gibt es einen hohen Anteil blauen Lichts im Feuer. Feuer ändert sich oft auch sehr schnell in der Helligkeit und im Aussehen. Man kann das also sehr schlecht steuern. Davon abgesehen ist Feuer auch gefährlich. Es besteht die Gefahr im Hochsommer den Wald abzufackeln oder dem Model die Frisur damit zu ruinieren. In den Bilder der Feuerartistin Anja sieht man ganz gut was ich meine. Umso länger das Feuertool brennt, desto schwächer werden die Lichtspuren. Dafür sehen sie meiner Meinung nach besser aus weil es keinen blauen Anteil im Feuer mehr gibt.
Finally, due to the lack of larger flames, it doesn't look like fire, more like glowing coals. So we prefer to paint the fire without real fire. This has several advantages. I can control the brightness. The brightness does not change during the light painting. And it is completely safe.
Zum Schluß sieht das durch die fehlenden größeren Flammen auch nicht aus wie Feuer, eher wie glühende Kohlen. Also malen wir lieber das Feuer ohne echtes Feuer ins Bild. Das hat mehrere Vorteile. Ich kann die Helligkeit steuern. Die Helligkeit verändert sich während des Light Painting nicht. Und das ist komplett ungefährlich.

For this painting I painted the fire with a double acrylic blade in Dominic's hands. The blade consists of two flames of different sizes. An orange colour filter is attached to one and a red one to the other. In flash or strobe mode, you can paint individual flames into the picture. In motion with static light, it looks like the picture.
Für dieses Bild habe ich das Feuer mit einem doppelten Acryl Blade in Dominics Hände gemalt. Das Blade besteht aus zwei unterschiedlich großen Flammen. An einer ist ein oranges Farbfilter befestigt an der anderen ein rotes. Im Blitz- oder Strobemodus kann man einzelne Flammen ins Bild malen. In der Bewegung mit statischem Licht sieht das dann so aus wie im Bild.

In this, as in the first picture, I painted the fire into the picture with a bundle of pink fibre optics. I illuminated this with the orange Convoy S2+. With a white torch and an orange colour filter it also works. For me, this is the best way to depict fire in light painting so far.
In diesem, wie auch im ersten Bild, habe ich das Feuer mit einem Bündel Rosa Glasfasern ins Bild gemalt. Dieses habe ich mit der orangen Convoy S2+ beleuchtet. Mit einer weißen Taschenlampe und orangem Farbfilter funktioniert das aber auch. Für mich ist das bisher die beste Möglichkeit Feuer im Light Painting darzustellen.
