YELLOW MAN & LIGHT
A few years ago I saw a picture of this yellow man made of Lego bricks. This work of art was created by Nathan Sawaya. I immediately had the idea to put light in the man's belly. However, I couldn't even make a quick trip to Boston, where this life-size sculpture is located. So the idea was soon put on the back burner again when I came across a 3D model of the man on Thingiverse a few weeks ago.
Vor einigen Jahren sah ich ein Bild von diesem gelben Mann aus Legosteinen. Erschaffen wurde dieses Kunstwerk von Nathan Sawaya. Ich hatte sofort die Idee Licht in den Bauch des Mannes zu packen. Allerdings konnte ich nicht mal schnell nach Boston fahren, wo diese lebensgroße Skulptur steht. Die Idee rückte also recht bald wieder in den Hintergrund, bis ich dann vor einigen Wochen zufällig auf ein 3D Model des Mannes bei Thingiverse gestoßen bin.
So I printed the sculpture on my 3D printer. The sculpture is only 15 centimetres high. The printing time was about 24 hours. Unfortunately, the sculpture's head fell off during printing. The printer then produced a sizable mountain of spaghetti. So that I didn't have to print the whole thing again, I divided the 3D object in the appropriate place, printed the head again and then glued it to the first part.
Ich druckte die Skulptur also auf meinem 3D Drucker aus. Die Skulptur ist nur 15 Zentimeter hoch. Die Druckzeit war ungefähr 24 Stunden. Leider fiel der Skulptur während des Drucks der Kopf ab. Der Drucker produzierte dann einen ansehnlichen Berg Spaghetti. Damit ich nicht das ganze Teil nochmal drucken musste habe ich das 3D Objekt an der entsprechenden Stelle geteilt, den Kopf nochmal gedruckt und diesen dann mit dem ersten Teil verklebt.
Because the arms of the Lego man hang in the air I was forced to print the part with support. The yellow PLA has an extremely good layer adhesion. For this reason it was very tedious to remove the support.
Weil die Arme des Lego Mannes in der Luft hängen war ich gezwungen das Teil mit Support zu drucken. Das gelbe PLA hat eine extrem gute Layerhaftung. Aus diesem Grund war es sehr mühselig den Support zu entfernen.
Then I set up the sculpture in my high-end photo studio in my kitchen and spread the many microscopic Lego bricks around. I can assure you that the little bricks cause just as much pain when you step on them barefoot.
Dann habe ich die Skulptur in meinem Highend Fotostudio in meiner Küche aufgestellt und die vielen mikroskopisch kleinen Legosteine davor verteilt. Ich kann euch versichern, dass die kleinen Steine genauso starke Schmerzen verursachen wenn man barfuss auf sie tritt.
I then took some test shots. The clean illumination of small things is often a much bigger challenge than the illumination of the huge lost place. I had tested the Emisar D4K and my new DIY Light Scanner. The scanner was then used in the final picture.
Ich machte dann einige Testaufnahmen. Die saubere Ausleuchtung kleiner Dinge stellt oftmals eine viele größere Herausforderung dar als die Ausleuchtung des riesengroßen Lost Places. Ich hatte die Emisar D4K und meinen neuen DIY Light Scanner getestet. Im finalen Bild kam dann der Scanner zum Einsatz.
I placed the teleidoscope in front of a second tripod and took some test shots with the 8mm fishey. I quickly realised that the light object was a bit too big for the opening in the belly of the Lego sculpture. To get it smaller, I would have needed a shorter focal length, but unfortunately I don't own anything shorter than 8mm. Such lenses blow a sizeable hole in the wallet. I took the sculpture with a 35mm focal length. This already filled the entire width of the picture. So I couldn't "enlarge" the aperture any further by reducing the distance between the camera and the sculpture. Then the buddy would have been missing his elbows.
Vor einem zweiten Stativ habe ich das Teleidoskop platziert und einige Testaufnahmen mit dem 8mm Fishey gemacht. Ich stellte schnell fest, dass das Lichtobjekt etwas zu groß für die Öffnung im Bauch der Legoskulptur ist. Um das kleiner zu bekommen, hätte ich eine kürzere Brennweite gebraucht, aber kürzer als 8mm besitze ich leider nicht. Solche Objektive sprengen ein ansehnliches Loch in den Geldbeutel. Die Skulptur habe ich mit 35mm Brennweite aufgenommen. Dies füllte bereits die gesamte Breite des Bildes aus. Also konnte ich die Öffnung nicht weiter "vergrößeren" in dem ich den Abstand zwischen Kamera und Skulptur verringere. Dann hätten dem Kumpel die Ellenbogen gefehlt.
Then it was on to the realisation of the whole picture. The Nikon D750 with the Nikkor 17-35/2.5 was on the first tripod. I illuminated the sculpture with the scanner, took the camera off the tripod, changed the lens to the 8mm fisheye, mounted the camera on the second tripod, "blindly" aligned the teleidoscope and then illuminated it with the Wurkos WK40 and the Emisar D4K. As expected, this did not work on the first try. I repeated the picture 10 times. Either the sculpture was too bright, the light object too bright or the alignment was not right.
Dann ging es an die Umsetzung des ganzen Bildes. Die Nikon D750 mit dem Nikkor 17-35/2,5 steckte auf dem ersten Stativ. Ich beleuchtete die Skulptur mit dem Scanner, nahm die Kamera vom Stativ, wechselte das Objektiv auf das 8mm Fisheye, montierte die Kamera auf das zweite Stativ, richtete "blind" das Teleidoskop aus und beleuchtete dieses dann mit der Wurkos WK40 und der Emisar D4K. Das hat, wie zu erwarten, nicht beim ersten Versuch funktioniert. Ich habe das Bild 10 Mal wiederholt. Entweder war die Skulptur zu hell, das Lichtobjekt zu hell oder die Ausrichtung hat nicht gepasst.
Here you can see the final result in the uncut version. I'm not at all a fan of the vertical format, but it would have been even less suitable across. At the appropriate height of the light globe, half the gentleman's head would have been missing. The exposure time was 52 seconds, the ISO was set to 50, on the Nikkor the aperture ring was set to 11 and on the fisheye to 16. As always, everything was done in a single exposure with moving light in front of the camera. Apart from the square crop, the image has not been processed on the computer.
Hier sieht ihr nochmal das finale Ergebnis in der ungeschnittenen Version. Ich bin überhaupt kein Freund des Hochformates, aber quer hätte das noch weniger gepasst. In der passenden Höhe des Lichtobkeltes hätte dem Herrn der halbe Kopf gefehlt. Die Belichtungszeit betrug 52 Sekunden, der ISO stand auf 50, am Nikkor stand der Blendenring auf 11 und am Fisheye auf 16. Wie immer wurde alles in einer einzelnen Belichtung mit bewegtem Licht vor der Kamera umgesetzt. Vom quadratischen Schnitt abgesehen ist das Bild nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Was für ein Aufwand!
Ja, aber ich habe schon wesentlich aufwändigere Bilder gemacht. Für mich ist Lightpainting nicht das schnelle Ergebnis, sondern viel mehr der gesamte Prozess. Meist funktionieren die verrückten Ideen sogar.
Hammer! Besonders die Entstehungsgeschichte bis zum fertigen Bild. Was für ein Aufwand. Und ich dachte, ich mache verrückte Sachen.😎
