Ever heard the famous saying that goes "all paths lead to Rome"? Well, in the Roman Empire it might have been true, but nowadays, Bologna is even better connected than the ancient city. It's huge train station and connections between north, south, east and west make it really conveniente and important as well. Today, I'm going to show you my visit to this one-of-a-kind city.

This arch is one of the first things that you get to see once you get out of the train station, the stunning Porta Galliera. First wink of medieval and baroque architecture that this wonderful city has to offer.

Right next to it, there's the Scalinatas del Pincio, with the same style as the Porta Galliera, but with a bit more opaque colours. Instead of being a somehow brigther orange, there's a terracota colour taking over.

As you start walking into Via Dell'Independenza, Bologna's main street, there are over and over again buildings that are really into details, with bright colours and medieval and baroque influences. It really takes you on a trip to the past.

But everything's not just related to the fazade of a building... you get to walk into the famous porticoes, which is one the trade marks for this wonderful city. These have been declared as UNESCO's world heritage and it's the only city in the world that has over 38km covered by porticoes... Stunning, right?
In fact, there's a street in which you can see the original porticoes, that were made out of wood. I couldn't get there, but we will have to just see the most "modern" ones:

These are other views you can get from Via Dell'Independenza, a sculpture of Garibaldi, all sorts of beautiful buildings... and many, many, many porticoes!!
Piazza Maggiore
It'd be pretty hard to talk about Bologna and not even mention Piazza Maggiore once. Just as in many other European cities, it's a huge town square surrounded by either churches or gobernment buildings and in which people tend to gather to have a good time (or sometimes, to be part of demonstrations...)
Here, we can see how the medieval aspect takes over. I simply fell in love with the shape of the windows and the porticoes, reminds me of an antique and gothic style... But let me show you, rather than just explaining:

Here, it's the Basilica di San Petronio, it's incredibly huge and beautiful. If you see it in not so detail, you will see that it's not finished, as half of it is how it should be done... and the upper side, well... to be finished.
It's got 22 chapels inside and there's a beautiful terrace on top.
Basilica di San PetronioRight behind the Basilica, you will find Luigi Di Galvana's statue, who was an italian doctor and physicist that graduated from the University of Bologna and that made huge improvements when it comes to electricity development.
Luigi Di Galvana statueOf course, another huge landmark when it comes to Piazza Maggiore, it's Neptune's Fountain. It's probably the place I've seen most crowded in Bologna, it's a really nice fountain (that's almost impossible to take a picture without nobody showing up... oops!)
Basilica di San Domenico
This is another landmark that I really enjoyed from the city. It's a Basilica that's pretty different from all the other I've visited. Of course, you can get it and see everything in detail.
At first, as soon as you step inside, you will see that everything's pretty dark. Pretty dark to be a church, that was weird:
I don't know why, but people could get inside that thing.
As we have seen in the porticoes, this same style got used for this roofs, in which they seem to be incredibly tall and gothic. I have to say that it did give a very special sight to this place, in which many sculptures from religious figures where placed.
There was this beautiful garden inside the Basilica, it give somehow a very peaceful sight. In the video I did show all the experience from getting inside till the moment I got out, it was a really nice moment to enjoy and admire how wonderful antique buildings can be. At the wall that's on the back, you can see the huge detail that it has!!

¿Alguna vez escuchó el famoso dicho que dice "todos los caminos conducen a Roma"? Bueno, en el Imperio Romano podría haber sido cierto, pero hoy en día, Bolonia está incluso mejor conectada que la ciudad antigua. Su enorme estación de tren y las conexiones entre el norte, el sur, el este y el oeste la hacen muy conveniente e importante también. Hoy les voy a mostrar mi visita a esta ciudad única en su tipo.

Además de su gran oferta en lo que respecta a la buena cocina y la gran cantidad de museos, Bolonia puede ser realmente llamativa en lo que respecta a su hermosa arquitectura. Va desde construcciones medievales a otras más modernas y góticas... y todas ellas van en diferentes tonalidades de terracota, rojo y naranja, lo que la hace realmente apetecible de ver una y otra vez.
Este arco es una de las primeras cosas que ves una vez que sales de la estación de tren, la impresionante Porta Galliera. Primer guiño de arquitectura medieval y barroca que nos ofrece esta maravillosa ciudad.

Justo al lado, están las Scalinatas del Pincio, con el mismo estilo que la Porta Galliera, pero con colores un poco más opacos. En lugar de ser un naranja algo más brillante, hay un color terracota que se hace cargo.

A medida que comienza a caminar por Via Dell'Independenza, la calle principal de Bolonia, hay una y otra vez edificios que se preocupan mucho por los detalles, con colores brillantes e influencias medievales y barrocas. Realmente te lleva a un viaje al pasado.

Pero no todo está relacionado con la fachada de un edificio... puedes entrar a los famosos pórticos, que es una de las marcas registradas de esta maravillosa ciudad. Estos han sido declarados patrimonio de la humanidad por la UNESCO y es la única ciudad del mundo que tiene más de 38km cubiertos por pórticos... Impresionante, ¿verdad?
De hecho, hay una calle en la que se pueden ver los pórticos originales, que estaban hechos de madera. No pude llegar allí, pero tendremos que ver solo los más "modernos":

Estas son otras vistas que puedes obtener desde Via Dell'Independenza, una escultura de Garibaldi, todo tipo de edificios hermosos ... ¡y muchos, muchos, muchos pórticos!
Piazza Maggiore
Sería bastante difícil hablar de Bolonia y ni siquiera mencionar la Piazza Maggiore una vez. Al igual que en muchas otras ciudades europeas, es una enorme plaza rodeada de iglesias o edificios gubernamentales y en la que la gente suele reunirse para pasar un buen rato (o, a veces, para formar parte de manifestaciones...)
Aquí, podemos ver cómo el aspecto medieval toma el control. Simplemente me enamoró la forma de las ventanas y los pórticos, me recuerda a un estilo antiguo y gótico... Pero déjame mostrarte, más que explicarte:

Aquí está la Basílica de San Petronio, es increíblemente grande y hermosa. Si lo ves con menos detalle, verás que no está terminado, ya que la mitad está como se debe hacer... y la parte de arriba, pues... por terminar.
Tiene 22 capillas adentro y hay una hermosa terraza en la parte superior.

Este es otro punto de referencia que realmente disfruté de la ciudad. Es una basílica bastante diferente a todas las que he visitado. Por supuesto, puedes conseguirlo y ver todo en detalle.
Al principio, tan pronto como entres, verás que todo está bastante oscuro. Bastante oscuro para ser una iglesia, eso fue raro:
Como hemos visto en los pórticos, este mismo estilo se utilizó para estas cubiertas, en las que parecen increíblemente altas y góticas. Debo decir que le dio un aspecto muy especial a este lugar, en el que se colocaron muchas esculturas de figuras religiosas.
Había este hermoso jardín dentro de la Basílica, que de alguna manera daba una vista muy pacífica. En el video mostré toda la experiencia desde que entré hasta que salí, fue un momento muy agradable para disfrutar y admirar lo maravillosos que pueden ser los edificios antiguos. En la pared que esta al fondo se puede ver el enorme detalle que tiene!!!
