Cinco veces he visitado Mérida (Venezuela) y en ninguna de esas ocasiones he podido probar los famosos helados de La Coromoto, una heladería que abrió en 1981 y se hizo famosa poco a poco por ofrecer además de los tradicionales, sabores muy extraños como aguacate, caraotas, atún, mariscos, queso, garbanzos, yuca, vino... y así hasta llegar a unos 877. Por tener tanta cantidad de sabores fueron incluidos en el Libro de Récords Guinness.
These photos of the ice cream parlor are from my first time in Mérida city a few years ago, I had been there for work but I had some free hours during the day which I spent walking around and getting to know a little bit. When I got to the ice cream parlor, guess what, it was "Closed for vacation" (for about a month), what bad luck! I had to settle for photographing its facade. At least I wasn't the only one disappointed, there were more people there with the same feeling.
Estas fotos de la heladería son de mi primera vez en la ciudad de Mérida hace unos años, había ido por trabajo pero tenía algunas horas libres durante el día que las dediqué a caminar por ahí y conocer un poco. Cuando llegué a la heladería, adivinen qué, estaba "Cerrada por vacaciones" (como por un mes), ¡qué mala suerte!, me tuve que conformar con fotografiar su fachada. Al menos no fui la única decepcionada, había más personas allí con el mismo sentimiento.
Nearby there is a square called El Llano and a church with attractive architecture with which I amused myself by taking a few shots.
Cerca hay una plaza llamada El Llano y una iglesia de atractiva arquitectura con la que me entretuve haciendo algunas tomas.
The next four times I went to Mérida there was no luck either, for one circumstance or another there was no time to stop by La Coromoto ice cream parlor, so it is still a pending place for me. I was left with the desire to try an extravagant ice cream flavor, it's true, but I met other places in the city on those trips and that's what I come to show you in this post.
Las siguientes cuatro veces que fui a Mérida tampoco hubo suerte, por una circunstancia u otra no hubo tiempo de pasar por la Heladería La Coromoto, así que sigue siendo un lugar pendiente para mí. Me quedé con las ganas de probar un helado de sabor extravagante, es verdad, pero conocí otros lugares de la ciudad en esos viajes y es eso lo que les vengo a mostrar en esta publicación.

A posada in the center was where I stayed my first time in this Andean city, the weather here is super nice, cool.

On another occasion, also for work, I stayed at the Hotel Venetur, which has very nice facilities and good service in general.
En otra oportunidad también por trabajo, me tocó quedarme en el Hotel Venetur, el cual tiene unas instalaciones muy bonitas y un buen servicio en general.
Look at the effect created by these hollow windows in the hotel's cabin-like rooms.

Another nice thing here is the view of the mountains, well in general it is like this in the whole city of Merida, you can have a taste of the spectacular Venezuelan Andes.
Otra cosa agradable aquí es la vista a las montañas, bueno en general es así en toda la urbe merideña, puedes tener un abreboca de los espectaculares andes venezolanos.
Walking is the best way to get to know a town or city, I like to have a map to orient myself, one of those that have the blocks and streets identified but I didn't get one, it doesn't matter, it's exciting to be surprised by the places at every step, isn't it? In the center of Merida I found several, like this monument from 1930 that pays homage to two great historical characters who were friends, the Liberator Simón Bolivar and the German scientist and traveler Alexander von Humboldt.
Caminar es la mejor manera de conocer un pueblo o ciudad, me gusta tener un mapa para orientarme, de esos que tienen las cuadras y calles identificadas pero no conseguí, no importa, es emocionante que te sorprendan los lugares a cada paso ¿no?. En el centro de Mérida encontré varios, como este monumento de 1930 que rinde homenaje a dos grandes personajes históricos que fueron amigos, el Libertador Simón Bolívar y el científico y viajero alemán Alejandro de Humboldt.
Nearby is a very striking building, the headquarters of the Rectorate of the University of Los Andes (ULA). Upon entering you discover a beautiful internal courtyard.
Cerca de allí está una edificación muy llamativa, la sede del Rectorado de la Universidad de Los Andes (ULA). Al entrar descubres un bello patio interno.
Mérida is also known as a student city, due to the number of young people who settle there to pursue a university degree. ULA has faculties scattered in various parts of the city.
Mérida es conocida también como una ciudad estudiantil, por la cantidad de jóvenes que se instalan allí para cursar una carrera universitaria. La ULA tiene facultades regadas en varias partes de la urbe.
In every city and town in Venezuela there is a Bolivar Square, it is the place where there is also almost always a church, in this case a Cathedral. It's a very beautiful space with lush vegetation and that atmosphere of quietness and at the same time of movement because being in a central area many people cross it at any time.
En cada ciudad y pueblo de Venezuela existe una Plaza Bolívar, es el lugar donde también casi siempre hay una iglesia, en este caso una Catedral. Es un espacio muy hermoso con frondosa vegetación y ese ambiente de quietud y a la vez de movimiento porque al estar en zona céntrica mucha gente la cruza a cualquier hora.
The equestrian monument to the Liberator Simón Bolívar was placed in the middle of this plaza in 1930, as part of the commemorative events for the 100th anniversary (December 17, 1830) of his death.
El monumento ecuestre al Libertador Simón Bolívar fue colocado en el medio de esta plaza en 1930, como parte de los eventos conmemorativos al cumplirse 100 años (17 de diciembre de 1830) de su muerte.
The old town has several striking buildings that are very well preserved, near the square I captured this one which is the seat of the City Council.
El casco histórico tiene varios edificios llamativos que se conservan muy bien, cerca de la plaza capturé este que es la sede del Concejo Municipal.
Not far from there, on 5 Zerpa Avenue, there is a gray building not very attractive on the outside, I decided to enter and inside it is totally the opposite.
No muy lejos de allí, en la Av. 5 Zerpa se encuentra una edificación gris no muy atractiva por fuera, decidí entrar y por dentro es totalmente lo opuesto.
It is the School of Music and Art Gallery La Otra Banda (Galob), an institution attached to the General Directorate of Culture and Extension of the University of Los Andes. I took a few minutes to photograph its interior, it seemed to me that it transmits a lot of peace.

It was founded in 1969 and is a space to promote the works of local and national artists. It also offers workshops and talks related to art.

In another area of the city is the Main Market, a place to go to try some traditional things, such as Andean arepas (made from wheat), trout, Andean pastelitos (wheat empanadas), blackberry juice, "polished" milk sweets and many more foods in addition to local handicrafts.
En otra zona de la ciudad se encuentra el Mercado Principal, un sitio al que hay que ir para probar algunas cosas tradicionales, como las arepas andinas (hechas de trigo), la trucha, los pastelitos andinos, el jugo de mora, los dulces de leche "abrillantados" y muchas comidas más además de las artesanías locales.
I remember the delicious trout and mushroom and cheese pastelitos I tasted and also the Andean arepas with smoked cheese, mmm! I didn't think of taking pictures of them, I didn't have a blog back then hahaha.

Getting around Mérida by public transportation didn't seem very complicated to me, of course I asked people which buses I had to take to get to some places and the drivers where I had to get off. I really liked the Trolebus system, a service that was inaugurated in 2007 and has stops with very nice modern architecture. I took some night photos at Pie del Llano Station and the Terminal Station at Ejido.
Moverse por Mérida en transporte público no me pareció muy complicado, por supuesto pregunté a la gente qué autobuses debía tomar para llegar a algunos lugares y a los conductores dónde me tenía que bajar. Me gustó mucho el sistema de Trolebus, servicio que fue inaugurado en 2007 y que tiene paradas con una arquitectura moderna muy bonita. Tomé algunas fotos nocturnas en la Estación Pie del Llano y la Estación Terminal que queda en Ejido.
Another day, at night, I went to one of the most famous bars in Mérida, called La Cucaracha, I don't know if it's still open but when I went there it had a very good atmosphere and music. Being a student city as I told you at the beginning, the nightlife is quite active here.
Otro día, por la noche, conocí uno de los bares más famosos de Mérida, llamado La Cucaracha, no sé si continúa abierto pero cuando fui tenía muy buen ambiente y música. Al ser una ciudad estudiantil como les conté al principio, la movida nocturna es bastante activa aquí.
I also visited the Metropolitan Stadium in Merida, which was built to be one of the venues for the 2007 Copa America, held in the country that year. I attended an event there and found it to be a spectacular structure.
También conocí el Estadio Metropolitano de Mérida, que fue construido para ser una de las sedes de la Copa América 2007, disputada en el país ese año. Asistí a un evento allí y me pareció una estructura espectacular.
Finally I show you the most important tourist attraction of the city of Merida, the cable car. It was inaugurated in 1960 and is known for being the highest (4,765 meters) and longest in the world (12.5 km). The first time I came here I couldn't go up because there were no tickets left, you had to go early to the ticket office and I went at noon, I only had that day off on that work trip so to the disappointment of not tasting the weird creations of the ice cream parlor La Coromoto I added not being able to go up in the cable car hahaha.
Por último les muestro el atractivo turístico más importante de la ciudad de Mérida, el teleférico. Fue inaugurado en 1960 y es conocido por ser el más alto (4.765 metros) y largo del mundo (12.5 km). La primera vez que vine acá no pude subir porque ya no quedaban entradas, había que ir temprano a las taquillas y yo fui al mediodía, sólo tenía ese día libre en aquel viaje laboral así que a la decepción de no probar las creaciones raras de la Heladería La Coromoto le sumé el no poder subir en el teleférico jajaja.
It was then closed for several years for renovation and reopened its doors in 2016, when I visited and did the full tour to write an article for a tourist magazine.

This cable car system, known as Mukumbarí, an indigenous expression that means "place where the sun sleeps", has five stations, each with the possibility of routes through the mountains and other activities, in the last one you can experience a snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, it is spectacular!
Este sistema teleférico renombrado como Mukumbarí, voz indígena que quiere decir “lugar donde duerme el sol”, tiene cinco estaciones, cada una con posibilidades de rutas por las montañas y otras actividades, en la última se puede experimentar una nevada y temperaturas bajo cero, ¡es espectacular!
I have many photos of the cable car that I haven't shared here, maybe I will make a separate post. Currently this icon of Merida has been out of service for two years for maintenance reasons, recently it was announced that it would start working again now in August, hopefully so to reactivate tourism and the economy in the region, it was always a tremendous hook to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
Tengo muchas fotos del teleférico que no he compartido aquí, quizás haga una publicación aparte. Actualmente este icono de Mérida lleva dos años sin prestar servicio por motivos de mantenimiento, recientemente se anunció que comenzaría a funcionar de nuevo ahora en agosto, ojalá así sea para que se reactive el turismo y la economía en la región, siempre fue un tremendo gancho para atraer turistas nacionales y extranjeros.

Yo he ido una sola vez hace años y mientras mis amigas compraban helados de chocolate o fresa yo pedí el de caraota, chicharrón y otro que ya no recuerdo, sé que eran tres y mira que saben igual a lo que se pide, el sabor del chicharrón era idéntico, pero lo más gracioso es que son sabrosos.
Que linda la arquitectura de Mérida, cuando fui no pude conocer edificios ni nada porque es distinto viajar solo que en tour como yo ando, no había visto la universidad es hermosa.
Yo no he subido al teleférico, cuando fui estaba en mantenimiento y en realidad me da miedo porque soy hipotensa y de paso mi corazón tiene bradicardia, por lo que la altura y los cambios de temperatura me descompensan mucho. Yo quiero ir, pero será para subir de a poquito un día por estación, ya que mi cuerpo a veces se pone popi.

Sí, definitivamente ir por tu cuenta es otra cosa, pero también en tour tiene sus ventajas, sobre todo económicas :P
Cuando fui al teleférico los guías hacen énfasis en lo del mal de altura porque como en cada estación estás más alto a algunas personas sí les pega, te dicen que cualquier malestar debes comunicarlo para recibir atención, allí tenían servicio médico cuando fui. Pero si haces pausa en cada estación un buen rato creo que puedes aclimatarte e ir hasta el final sin problema. Por cierto que en estas fechas hay bastante nieve por allá...

Umm no sabía que había atención médica en las estaciones 🤔😊, yo vi en una película que existian pastillas que son oxígeno y quitan el mal de altura en esos casos, no se si será ficción y no existen 😂🕵️♀️ o alomejor existen en otros países.

Sí, tienen atención médica porque va gente de distintas condiciones y el cambio de altitud puede ser fuerte. Sí, esas pastillas existen, no son ficción jeje, pero lo más efectivo es que la persona descienda si se empieza a sentir mal.

Solo he visitado Mérida una vez y siento que me falto muchísimo por conocer. Creo que de haber visitado esa escuela de musiva me hubiese quedado mucho rato allí, se ve muy agradable. Cuando fui tuve oportunidad de probar los helados de la Heladería Coromoto, recuerdo que pedi de doritos y caraotras (jajajajajaja) Y en efecto sabían a doritos y caraotas, fue por era curiosidad, tenia la idea de que no podían tener el mismo sabor. Conocí el teleférico, pero no pude subir porque estaba corta de tiempo y en efecto los tickecs se acababan muy rápido. definitivamente esta es una ciudad encantadora y em encantaría poder visitarla de nuevo pronto.

Creo que en i paso por allá existía el de sabor a pizza, aunque yo sigo la cuenta de la heladería por Instagram y ralamente no veo que sirvan mucha variedad, a menos que solo le tomen fotos a lo que le piden! Sin embargo vi hace poco uno de pepino y otro de auyama y ummmh me pareció muy interesante jajaja!
Se que cuando vaya a Mérida nuevamente tengo que ir a esa escuela de música a tomar muchas fotos!

Hola!! Qué hermoso post!! Parece que la ciudad de Mérida es bellísima!! Me encantó cómo vas contando lo que visitaste, cada parte de la ciudad, y los diferentes sectores que se ofrecen al turismo.
El bar La Cucaracha me llamó mucho la atención, como también el saber que es una ciudad estudiantil con bastante movimiento nocturno. Sin embargo, el premio se lo lleva la heladería!!
Helado sabor atún o mariscos?! No puedo ni imaginarme eso! Y si lo pienso, me da la sensación de que sabe mal, jeje. Pero uno puede sorprenderse!

Mérida es preciosa en verdad y es la ciudad precursora del turismo en Venezuela, tiene mucha infraestructura y servicios para los visitantes: posadas, hoteles, restaurantes, parques, turismo de aventura, etc, etc., nadie sale decepcionado de conocerla jejeje
La heladería es mi meta jajaja, se me ha hecho esquiva pero pretendo volver y comer un mix de todos esos sabores locos, que como dices puede que sorprendan al paladar gratamente, ¡saludos!

I had no idea that the ice cream from that place is so famous, but that's perhaps I'm not really a fan of this dessert, lol. Anyway, I'm sure exploring the city felt tastier than any ice cream and that you will feel its "taste" for a long while
Yeah, that ice cream shop is famous here, I love ice cream but I don't know what flavor I would have chosen if the store had been open, they have too extreme flavors hahaha. That's right, I really enjoyed the city anyway, greetings!
