The word "barrio" (neighborhood) perhaps has a derogatory meaning in Venezuela, as it is used to name areas inhabited by low-income people and with problems in terms of housing, basic services (water, electricity, gas, etc.), transportation and security.
Muchas veces el miedo forma parte de la palabra “barrio”, debido a ese significado negativo que se les ha dado a estos lugares, sin embargo, a lo largo del tiempo que tengo como periodista, he tenido la oportunidad de visitar muchos barrios, tanto en Caracas como en el interior del país y estando allí se me ha quitado de la cabeza ese pre-concepto o prejuicio sobre estas zonas y he visto que a pesar de los problemas que puedan tener no merecen que la gente los trate de forma discriminatoria.
Fear is often part of the word "barrio", due to the negative meaning that these places have been given, however, throughout my time as a journalist, I have had the opportunity to visit many neighborhoods, both in Caracas as well as in the interior of the country and being there, that pre-concept or prejudice about these areas has been removed from my head and I have seen that despite the problems they may have, they don't deserve that people treat them in a discriminatory way.

Precisamente, para acceder a Santa Eduvigis tuve que cruzar una parte del cementerio y subir entre varias tumbas hasta llegar a la entrada, allí empiezan las escalinatas y las callecitas estrechas a través de las cuales la gente llega a sus casas.

Yo estaba haciendo un trabajo periodístico, entrevistando a varias personas de esta comunidad y ellos me llevaron a conocer varios lugares de su barrio, así que aproveché para tomar algunas fotos.
I was doing journalistic work, interviewing several people from this community and they took me to see various places in their neighborhood, so I took the opportunity to take some photos.

Entre el desorden en que fueron construidas las viviendas del barrio a través de los años, poco a poco la gente se ha organizado y con los entes gubernamentales han logrado mejorar y embellecer varias partes de su entorno.

Yo soy de Argentina, y acá hay mucho prejuicio por las "villas" que es exactamente lo mismo, casillas de personas humildes que todos señalan como delincuentes y vendedores de droga y bla, no entienden que eso hay en todos lados, que en las villas también hay gente trabajadora. No por nacer y vivir en una villa sos automáticamente un delincuente. Aplaudo que hayas dejado ese pre-concepto! Un saludo
Hola, así es, no por vivir en "barrios" o "villas" la gente tiene que cargar con un estigma, hay personas buenas y malas en todos lados, independientemente de dónde vivan, ¡gracias por pasar por aquí y comentar!
Very interesting tour, thank you for taking us there :) Yeah, some barrios are definitely more dangerous than others, I remember hearing a lot of bad things about Comuna 13 in Medellin, Colombia for example...

Yes, both Medellin and Bogota changed a lot, for better, but there are still places and neighborhoods there that people (especially gringos :D) are advised to avoid ;)
