Seagulls

Testing out the Bird Eye Focus on the beach

Last night I decided to get out for a walk and headed to West beach here in New Bedford, as the temperature was fairly nice and at home it was hardly any wind at all.
But at the beach the wind was really gusting over 20 MPH gusting to higher or at least that's how it felt to me. plus the clouds quickly were fading away so I decided that it wasn't worth staying at the beach till sunset as I had originally planned.

But as there were plenty of seagulls at the beach I thought I may as well try out the Birds Eye Autofocus on my new Sony A7iv and hence this post with a few shots of Seagulls

I must say I was pretty impressed how good the Bird Eye auto focus worked, it looked onto the eye right away on most of the seagulls I aimed at and I got quite a few shots that were keepers.
I have bene frustrated in the past not getting any reasonable shots of birds, but I think from last nights tests and these shots I got I have a better chance this year

I was using my Sony 24-240 lens for these shots, its a good lens for a Wide zoom range, but in some other ways not a great lens, I will have to try out some more shots of birds on the next nice day using my big Sony 150-600 lens, I kind of wished I had it with me last night but its a big heavy lens and in the wind it would have bene a struggle to hold it steady anyway.

So all in All so far with my few tests walks with the new camera I am pretty impressed, and think I have it all setup as I want it now.
It has three memory recall settings which I have setup two of them for now, one for action shots such as sport, not that I do sports photos often but maybe this year I will, and a second one setup for bird photography, so if I see a bird flying by I can quickly switch to memory recall two with a turn of a dial and be ready to catch shots of it, the third option I have setup for landscape photos

Normally when I take shots of birds like I did last night for maybe 5 or 10 minutes I would struggle to find a few good shots but I got plenty last night these are just a few I quickly edited this morning

All in all I am pretty happy with them but know I can do better with the other lens sometime

Great photographs, I like the 3, 5 and last one the best.
Looks like the birds eye autofocus works really good. Glad it works out so well for you.
A new camera always takes a little getting used to.

Thanks for the feedback, I just posted them in the order that I got them so interesting to hear what others think

Yes the new camera and the bird focus worked so well, I am more than happy with it

You are welcome 😊

Thank you 🙏🏻

👍🙂👍

Man, beautiful details with those photographs. I know people call them rats with wings, but they are still beautiful birds.

I to think they are beautiful and very happy with these shots the new camera is working well for me

Yeah, the detail is wonderful - I finally got that Canon but it's been too cold to roll out. I really want to get into bird photography this spring.

Yeah the cold has stopped me getting out much with my new one as well, but come spring we will get out and about with our new cameras :)

Now you have told me one more reason to get the EOS R5 because it also has a great birds eye autofocus 😀
Great photos, JJ, I have never been able to take sharp photos of birds in flight. The longer lens would have been better for the bird photos, of course, but these are great as well

The best time with sea gulls is throwing something to them while on a ferry.

Yes indeed that is a good time, :)

Wow, it did a great job. Love the Sony!

Thanks I was really impressed in the past I have struggled to get OK shots of any sort of bird

Good shots I must say. i enjoy watching all the pictures over and over again. I love nature, cheers

Thanks Kindly, :)

Nice shots! Is bird's eye focus just a general term that they call it or was it really influenced by the fact that many bird watchers also take pictures? Either way it is pretty cool. It seems to do a really great job too. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks and it is specific to birds, the first eye focus was of course humans, which my old camera had, then the higher end models had animal and then Bird eye focus, which are all on my new camera and it amazed me how well it found the eye of the bird then tracked it pretty well

Very intersting!

Very interesting birds, I see them all the time, since I like to fish, and I spend a lot of time by the water, so I see different types of birds. I love their sound in silence.

By the way, your post is extra. Congratulations.

Don't you love when things work out when the conditions are not stellar? Chances are, if it wasn't windy, you might not have taken the pictures of the seagulls. This way, not you can perfect it.

I really like the first, third, and fifth ones. The close us is cool, just because I can count his feathers. That is a win. The others show off the amazing eye the lens has and capture it. I have a 400 that is heavy also, It is huge and heavy, so don't like to lug it, especially when I am on foot.

Then the tripod. LOL I must be getting old. Great shots and I am glad you are getting out and trying the new piece. :)

Have a great day!

Yes it did work out well and happy to test it in birds looking forward to going birding in spring with my big lens

nice post man, i love, nicest moment with the birds

Hive Power Up Month - Feedback from day 18

Your sony camera did a wonderful job capturing such spectacular images of the sea gulls, that third picture is quite up close. I have tried taking pics of birds in flight with my mobile but they are always blurred or not that clear {hehe}. Thank you for sharing and keep discovering cool features on your new camera. Do enjoy Friday ahead :}

getting photos of birds is indeed a challenge one I have struggled with hopefully i will have better luck this year

Very good shot. in my opinion, this is not an easy job to photograph a seagull in flight. but you can aim it. cool...
I'm currently also using a Sony A7ii camera and a KiT lens. I learned a lot from the results of your photos posted here.

Thanks the A7ii is a great camera as well, I do love what Sony has achieved with their cameras

right sir. I only bought two when the price of the hive went up at that time.

thats great hive helped you to get it

I never get sick of watching and filming and photographing the shore birds. Even the basic gulls are always amusing. There is one fellow I watch each morning have his breakfast out front, their stoic ways make me smile. More lovely photos @tattoodjay

I to enjoy watching the birds but seldom got any good shots of them, Hoping to do better this year

have a great day

Wow! These really are beautiful photos. All the detail is so clearly visible on these birds!

I especially like the last one with the focus perfectly on the bird while the background is blurred!

Thanks for sharing these photos with us!

And thanks for your support and positive feedback

Holy beautiful @tattoodjay I love your eye and your shots. Oh, how I long for the oceanside! My longing lingers, now...smelling the salty air...
