The Hurricane Barrier wall

The Hurricane Barrier wall

I often take walks on the Harbor and Cove walks here in New Bedford, there great places to get walks in, but often I have focused on the views from the walks and not on what they are built on or why, so for this post I will change that and show some shots of the Hurricane Barrier walls here in New Bedford.
This first shot is at one end of the Harbor Walk

The Harbor walk was Opened in 2015, and is 3,880 feet long and tops New Bedford’s hurricane barrier on the east side of the city’s southern peninsula.

The cove walk opened in 2017 and is 5,500 feet long, and is lit at night making walking there anytime quite pleasant.

The Hurricane barriers themselves are a lot older construction started in 1962 and were dedicated in 1966, from what I understand the hurricane barrier remains the largest manmade structure on the east coast of the United States and provides security for industries, the fishing fleet, and hundreds of homes in residential neighborhoods

Here is another shot of the Walk about mid way round on the Cove Walk and you can see the walls built up as the Hurricane barrier

Another shot of the cove walk Hurricane wall. I hope these shots give you a sense of its size and length.

At the ends of the Hurricane walls there are barriers that can be closed, one between the New Bedford barrier and the Fairhaven one and across a couple of roads including this one at one end of the Cove Walk

This next shot shows one of the gates that can be closed if a Hurricane is approaching, they join the wall across the road to close of the barrier and provide protection

And another shot at one end of the cove walk with nice warm colors in the sky as the sun rises

That's a huge wall! Hopefully it will actually work in it's time of need.

Its been around since the 60s and has provided protection during some big storms since then

Are the houses that close to the water? Even with the wall that seems risky.

!PIZZA !ALIVE

Yes some are that close and even closer here in new England, I have seen some terrible damage to some in the area I previously lived after super storms
I like being by the water, but for that reason I would not have one to close to the water

Safety has to come first. I still remember seeing Katrina on the news.

OHh yeah, and Super Storm Sandy did a lot of damage in Connecticutt when we were there

I heard that she wasn't exactly a lady!

Beautiful, this walk especially the first picture reminded me of Juhu Beach in Mumbai. Beautiful images.

Thanks kindly, I never made it to that beach when I was there

@tattoodjay, wow....wow....wow....amazing. I like this. I Want see you to live.

Thanks so much
have a great day

Oh wow, that is really cool. It actually doesn't look as big as it is from a distance. Then when you see the close up shots you really get a good idea of just how big it is. I like that they have the gates too. Still allowing access while also offering protection is good.

Yeah they are pretty impressive, and have stood the test of time with some big storms, I love they have the walkways on them as well giving more purpose to them

You always take great photos 👍🏼

Thanks kindly your support is appreciated

Have a great day

Have a lovely day too

👍🙂👍

Your last photo was gorgeous.
That barrier was so big, great construction, cool walk.

Thanks that last one was one I took just the other day and added to the post it seems to be the most popular one

Doesn't it seem funny to you that the Northeast is a little better protected than the Panhandle of Florida or Louisianna? I have lived in both, although Louisianna only 5 months Temporary Duty... and I lived in Mexico Beach, two houses from the beach. In 2018, it was hit with a tropical cyclone, which turned into a Category 5 hurricane, I think the first ever to take a direct hit in the US. I was not at the house, I had already packed the house and moved long before that and the house was no longer owned by me. It took the entire house down. Nothing was left. I also lived in Cocoa Beach and it was pretty devastated by hurricanes and tropical storms. Really, nothing is in place like what we had up north. Not sure why. Perhaps the bazillion-dollar fishing industry?

Aside from all of that nonsense I just shared, your pictures are glorious. You have a wonderful ability to mix the reality of life and living with the artform. The colors are stunning in the last picture show. Simply gorgeous!

Yeah that is crazy isn’t it I guess they had more money or motivation here

Thanks for such kind feedback as always

Have a great day

I've been to New Bedford far too many times to count really some interesting buildings, views and history. There used to be an amazing reclaimed architectural supply place (actually moved there from Wareham where it was smaller but I thought more affordable) then I sort of lost track of it late mid 2000's I wonder if it's still around. Just walking into a vast old warehouse with rows of antique toilets or endless doors stacked neatly was a fun experience.
Glad I found you again @tattoodjay I keep trying to keep track of the ole steemit people now that I'm trying to be more of a regular 'Hiveian' Or whatever we're meant to be called ;)

I came here via @dreemport.

Thanks for your visit and no need for Sir JJ is fine

Ahaha. I'd put that in mind.

👍🙂👍

Never knew there were things like hurricane barriers so this was informative.

The first picture also is so beautiful and immediately caught my eye.

@dreemport brought me here.

Thanks so much, they serve a great need to protect the city, and its great they have walkways on top of them

Wow those are amazing! I wish I could see them very closely 😁 that'd be really nice.

The last shot though, that's my favorite... I love the sunset on it 😊

Well done on this one Jay, got here through @dreemport

Gosh, this is fascinating! I couldn't resist doing a Presearch on the Hurricane Barrier after reading your article and seeing your photos. Hullabaloo!!! that thing is as wide and as tall as the Great Wall of China!!! What a spectacular feat of human engineering and what an immense level of protection it offers to the local community in New Bedford. And... you have a nice area in which to walk around the bay too :-) Thank you for bringing such an interesting insight today with some great photos @tattoodjay. I learned something completely new about the world and I !LUV it when that happens. !PIZZA I came to your post via @dreemport

And lol no it’s nit as big as the Great Wall

Have a great day

ha ha ...I can see the raised stone walls aren't but the actual main gates that protect the entrance are massive. This article here is where I got the info. I think they are only referring to the massive gates that close off the bay itself though. But yeah, when you think about your pictures and the street gates ...you must have been wondering whether I've been drinking my bathwater lols. Great article though. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

That was such an interesting article I had not seen
And I stand corrected the wall itself it seems to say is taller and wider than the Great Wall but not as long of course 👍

!LUV some !BEER now and again
