🇬🇧 This story is one of a brief encounter, as fleeting as a road-trip stop, yet intense enough to leave an indelible mark. It is told here through photographs of the landscapes we crossed together. Around San Pedro de Atacama, our paths converged, and from there began the adventure along the road to the Jama Pass, through which we hoped to reach neighbouring Argentina. Although it was David, the young Colombian with whom we shared a slice of life, who made these moments magical, here we will speak only of landscapes, illustrated by photos that I hope you will enjoy and that may spark your own desire for elsewhere.

🇫🇷 Cette histoire est celle d'une rencontre, éphémère comme une étape de road trip, mais dont l'intensité laisse des traces inaltérables. Elle est retracée ici sous la forme photographique des paysages traversés ensemble. C'est autour de San Pedro de Atacama que nos routes ont convergé, ensuite ce fut l'aventure sur la route du col de Jama par lequel nous voulions rejoindre l'Argentine voisine. Bien que ce soit David, ce jeune Colombien avec qui nous avons partagé une tranche de vie, qui ait rendu ces moments magiques, nous ne parlerons ici que de paysages illustrés par des photos qui, je l'espère, vous plairont et vous donneront envie d'ailleurs.

🇪🇸 Esta historia es la de un encuentro fugaz, tan breve como una parada de road trip, pero cuya intensidad deja huellas imborrables. Se cuenta aquí a través de fotografías de los paisajes que recorrimos juntos. Fue alrededor de San Pedro de Atacama donde nuestros caminos convergieron, y desde allí comenzó la aventura por la ruta del paso de Jama, por el cual queríamos llegar a la vecina Argentina. Aunque fue David, el joven colombiano con quien compartimos un momento de vida, quien hizo mágicos esos instantes, aquí solo hablaremos de paisajes ilustrados por fotos que, espero, os gusten y despierten vuestras ganas de viajar.

🇬🇧 The region of San Pedro de Atacama has become famous and highly touristic over the past twenty years. This typical Atacama Desert village, at the crossroads of the Bolivian and Argentine borders, sits at around 3000 metres of altitude. In its surroundings, one finds all the mineral beauty of the Andean nature: crystal-clear lakes, warm-coloured deserts, snow-capped mountains, geysers, salt flats, unique wildlife and above all… space, that immensity that makes us feel free. I would say, as I often tend to do in recent years, that despite mass tourism, the place is still worth a visit, provided one takes the time to step off the beaten path.

🇫🇷 La région de San Pedro de Atacama est devenue fameuse et très touristique au cours de ces vingt dernières années. Ce village typique du désert d'Atacama, au croisement des frontières bolivienne et argentine, est situé à environ 3000 m d'altitude. Dans ses alentours, on retrouve toute la beauté minérale de la nature andine : lacs aux eaux transparentes, déserts aux couleurs chaudes, montagnes enneigées, geysers, salines, faune spécifique et surtout l’espace, cette immensité qui nous fait sentir libres. Je dirais, comme j’ai souvent tendance à le faire ces dernières années, que malgré la massification du tourisme le lieu vaut encore la peine d’une visite à condition de prendre le temps de sortir des sentiers battus.

🇪🇸 La región de San Pedro de Atacama se ha vuelto famosa y muy turística en los últimos veinte años. Este pueblo típico del desierto de Atacama, en el cruce con las fronteras boliviana y argentina, se encuentra a unos 3000 m de altitud. En sus alrededores se aprecia toda la belleza mineral de la naturaleza andina: lagos de aguas transparentes, desiertos de colores cálidos, montañas nevadas, géiseres, salares, fauna específica y sobre todo el espacio, esa inmensidad que nos hace sentir libres. Diría, como suelo hacerlo estos últimos años, que a pesar del turismo masivo el lugar sigue valiendo la pena siempre que uno tome tiempo para salirse de los caminos más transitados.

🇬🇧 Like David, our plan was to reach Argentina via the famous Jama Pass, which peaks at 4280 metres. In this austral spring, crossing it by motorbike was far from guaranteed. The cold, the wind, the snow and the difficulty of refuelling all had to be discussed and planned. Our first attempt was a failure: the day before, it had rained heavily on San Pedro, a rare event, and higher up the snow had blocked the road. The border was closed. Fortunately, on the second attempt, luck was on our side: a strong tailwind helped us save fuel, the weather was stable enough and the cold manageable, around 2°C at the pass. The border post reopened and… we even got a bit of sun for the photos.

🇫🇷 Comme David, notre idée était de rejoindre l'Argentine par le fameux col de Jama qui culmine à 4280 m d'altitude. En ce printemps austral, ce passage en moto n’allait pas de soi. Le froid, le vent, la neige et la difficulté pour se ravitailler en carburant devaient être discutés et planifiés. Notre première tentative fut un échec : la veille il avait plu abondamment sur San Pedro, fait rarissime, et plus haut la neige avait bloqué la route. La frontière était fermée. Fort heureusement, pour la seconde tentative la chance nous a souri, un fort vent arrière nous a permis de grosses économies de carburant, un temps assez stable et un froid relatif, environ 2 º au col. Le poste frontière a rouvert et… un peu de soleil pour les images.

🇪🇸 Al igual que David, nuestra idea era llegar a Argentina por el famoso paso de Jama, que alcanza los 4280 m de altitud. En esta primavera austral, cruzarlo en moto no era evidente. El frío, el viento, la nieve y la dificultad para conseguir combustible debían discutirse y planificarse. Nuestro primer intento fue un fracaso: la víspera había llovido intensamente en San Pedro, algo rarísimo, y más arriba la nieve había bloqueado la carretera. La frontera estaba cerrada. Por suerte, en el segundo intento la fortuna nos sonrió: un fuerte viento de cola nos permitió ahorrar mucho combustible, el clima fue bastante estable y el frío relativamente soportable, unos 2 ºC en el paso. El puesto fronterizo reabrió y… algo de sol acompañó nuestras fotos.

🇬🇧 Once past the border, the road drops quickly and the landscapes shift to warmer ochre tones. You arrive in north-western Argentina, in the province of Jujuy, the land of the seven-coloured hill… but that is another story, one I would rather tell later.

🇫🇷 Une fois passée la frontière, la route descend rapidement et les paysages changent pour des couleurs plus ocres, plus chaudes. On arrive dans le nord-ouest de l’Argentine, la province de Jujuy, le village aux sept couleurs… mais ça, c’est une autre histoire que je préfère raconter plus tard.

🇪🇸 Tras cruzar la frontera, la carretera desciende rápidamente y los paisajes se vuelven más ocres y cálidos. Se llega al noroeste de Argentina, a la provincia de Jujuy, el pueblo de los siete colores… pero esa es otra historia que prefiero contar más adelante.

🇬🇧 Fleeting encounters sometimes remain fleeting, but they can also grow into lasting relationships. One must simply ensure that the roads cross again. Today, communication is easy and news fades only when people choose to let it fade. We met David again later in the trip and he is now firmly waiting for us when we return to Colombia.

🇫🇷 Les rencontres éphémères le restent parfois mais peuvent aussi se transformer en relations pérennes. Il faut faire en sorte que les routes se recroisent. Aujourd’hui, la communication est facile et les nouvelles ne se tarissent que par la volonté des parties. Nous avons retrouvé David au cours du voyage et il nous attend de pied ferme lorsque nous retournerons en Colombie.

🇪🇸 Los encuentros efímeros a veces se quedan en eso, pero también pueden convertirse en relaciones duraderas. Solo hace falta procurar que los caminos vuelvan a cruzarse. Hoy la comunicación es sencilla y las noticias solo se apagan si las personas lo deciden. Volvimos a encontrarnos con David durante el viaje y ahora nos espera con entusiasmo cuando regresemos a Colombia.

C'est magnifique ! Je regarde aussi le côté pratique : sur l'avant-dernière photo, on voit une maison, peut-être un petite ferme .. ont-ils l'eau courante ou un puits ou doivent-ils faire des kilomètres pour aller chercher de l'eau ? Et pour manger, ont-ils un potager malgré ces terres arides ou doivent-ils aussi se rendre au village le + proche ?
Tiens, la viande de guanaco est-elle comestible pour l'homme ?

Concrétement cette ferme est á environ un km du village de Punamarca dans lequel on trouve tout ce qu'il faut. Je pense, sans être sûr que l'eau courante y arrive. Potager je ne pense pas mais ils ont un peu d'élevage.
Oui la viande de Guanaco est comestible. Seule une partie de l'animal est intéressante (le dos je crois) donc pour des éleveurs se serait moins rentable qu'une brebis. La chasse est en principe interdite en sauf les propriétaires sur leur terrain.

Thanks! I’m happy you liked it! I swear the real scene was doing all the work, not me! These are hot springs in a very cold early-morning atmosphere at 4,000 meters altitude. Even the flamingos use them so they don’t end up with their legs stuck in the ice at dawn.
