Icicles

Melting and Freezing happen simultaneously when icicles form...

The sun's hot rays in frigid air have a hard time melting the reflective ice. But on a clear blue sky and with time it happens even at minus 10° Celsius. It grows and grows and the icicles can take on enormous proportions. When forming at the edge of a roof they loom quite dangerously over unknowing pedestrians. Hit or miss. It might come down to that...

Hanging there suspended in the blue, the water keeps dripping down in free fall. And each drop's residue that remains on that icy surface is the building block of the bigger whole. You can see the layers if you look closely.

Often they get lonely and have companions. But this one was all by itself. Its ambitions were to climb all the way down to the earth I think. But would the weather allow for it? Normally these conditions don't last too long (at least where I live), so that was quite the challenge. But nevertheless it was happy to just keep on dripping and growing.

Some of that ice turns to water again and freezes on its way down. But some makes it to the bottom of the icicle as well and then they hang for a split second and drop. They always fall alone, but when enough water flows down they get a companion and they can enjoy the fall together.

In that free fall the earth comes rushing towards them and they say goodbye to their icicle. But what awaits them at the bottom? Another icicle growing towards the sky? A river or a street? Snow?

They don't know until they make touch with their new environment. And for that moment - in free fall - they are suspended in bliss.
