In this section, I will no longer be handing out STARBITS, as those entries are not allowed. However, I will continue to share high-quality songs, share how I discovered them, and share some interesting facts about them. To top it all off, I will also include several tables with the statistics compiled by the Rising Star game.
Since May, I have been creating a playlist to keep track of the latest songs I have discussed in my posts. This will help me remember whether I have already talked about a song before or not. The most recent one is Prision Break (Main Theme) from the composer Ramin Djawadi.
It's On: Eazy-E
My song of choice on Spotify for today's post is It's On from the legendary gangsta rap artist Eazy-E.
Today I wanted to bring back one of my all-time favorite genres: Hip-Hop. I'm a big fan of the history of the genre, as well as the history of all the feuds between artists and how they released epic songs to diss each other. A great example of this are the “diss tracks” that Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Dr. Dre released after the breakup of the iconic band N.W.A.
My first experience with Eazy-E came after an afternoon when I was bored and started looking for something to watch on Netflix. There was a film that caught my attention because of its description and cover, called Straight Outta Compton. The film told the story of the formation and dissolution of one of the most iconic groups in hip-hop: N.W.A (Niggas With Attitude).
After watching that movie/documentary, which I loved, I started exploring more about each artist's musical repertoire. I found out that the first to leave the group was Ice Cube due to money issues with his manager, so the active members of N.W.A didn't hesitate to trash him in the last songs they released.
In response to this criticism, Ice Cube decided to release a song titled “No Vaseline.” I consider this song to be one of the best diss tracks in history because it destroys Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and DJ Yella in the music scene.
A few months later, Dr. Dre also decided to leave the band after realizing that their manager was ripping them off, so he began his solo career by releasing one of my favorite albums: The Chronic. The first song on the album was titled Fuck With D.R.E Day and was a diss track against Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and Tim Dogg, who had created a song called Fuck Compton. One of the interesting things about that song is that it was one of the first major appearances of the iconic artist Snoop Dogg.
Eazy-E wasn't going to sit idly by, and in response to that song, he released the song I've selected for today's post: It's On. The song starts off by mockingly parodying Fuck Wit Dre Day, making it clear that for him, “D.R.E.'s day is payday,” since Dre was still paying him for a contract he had signed years earlier. Every time Dr. Dre sold an album, he had to pay him a share of the profits, so he took advantage of that to mock him.
He also has other criticisms of the artist, calling him a studio gangster, questioning his sexuality, and mentioning some other inconveniences he had in his personal life. The truth is that Eazy-E hit his former partner pretty hard and gave us one of the best diss tracks in gangsta rap.
A few years later, Eazy-E contracted AIDS and ended up dying after spending several weeks in critical condition. Due to his delicate situation, the former members of N.W.A—Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella—ended up making peace and putting their past fights behind them. The group would release another song some time later, in which they also paid tribute to Eazy-E, titled Chin Check (a great song).
