HELP! Is There a Simple Grower's Guide Anywhere Please?

in WeedCash Network2 years ago (edited)

A couple of months ago I posted about the relaxation of the rules and the decriminalisation surrounding the use and growth of Cannabis and Hemp here in Thailand. A subject I know very little about to be honest...

...and when I arrived on Koh Samui this week, I found the father-in-law had obviously been at the front of the queue for the freebie plants the government were giving away...

It seems that the normally green-fingered Khun Phaw is struggling a little and so rather than simply Google, I'd drop into Hive and ask the great and good of the community for their advice. @derangedvisions seems to be the expert from the many posts about this healthy looking crop so if you wouldn't mind dropping a comment here I'd be grateful, same applies to anyone else who can help please!

The following are pics of how his current crop is going and as I said, I'm a bit lost but I know he's had a few dies already. If it helps, we're on Koh Samui, tropical climate, very hot and currently, frequent strong showers and the plants are potted and outside.

As I said, any ideas of the soil types and do they like direct sunlight or shade etc I had thought it would be a case of 'the hotter the better' but I'm not even sure about that! Usually in the UK, this stuff is grown under lights in plastic tents!

Thanks in advance ladies and gentlemen!

There are so many variables that could be in play here between genetics, water, nutrients and soil. If I would have to guess I would say your soil is too acidic. It probably has a PH of under 6 so under these conditions many of the nutrients in the soil are insoluble and unavailable to the plants. Grab a soil PH tester and test the soil, if it's under 6 get some PH up or you can use a tablespoon of baking soda per gallon of water and try that. But like I said that would be my guess. I hope everything works out for you man.

Thank you! I have just ordered a pH meter to send to the father in law to find out and I'll also try and ask him what he's feeding them as there was some 'stuff' in the soil I noticed! Thanks for your help and appreciate you dropping by :-)

The question is: is he growing C indica or C sativa?
The seedlings look to me like Sativa, which is native to Africa and has a very long growing cycle of 6-8 months so it's slow to get going but grows very large. Plants like full sun, which I see lacking in the pictures and well-drained soil but apart from that, they aren't too fussy. Over-composted soil will make the plants grow large fast and be vulnerable to breaking. The plants could also be mostly male and they don't do much at all.

Yeah. They don't call it weeds for nothing. Shit will grow in sand during a drought. Forest soils are acidic, so PH could be an issue, as mentioned above. I didn't know there were so many knowledgeable horticulturists on Hive.

Usually in the UK, this stuff is grown under lights in plastic tents!

That and supplementing vitamin D are expected when there's no sun.

Check out dynamicgreentk and my 30 something yearlong friend knottydaddy.

Thanks mate. When I get a few minutes tonight to sit down for a while, I'll hunt them down and suck out their knowledge :-)

Hi growing in the tropics presents unique challenges. Seed type and soil composition can make a difference. I have some friends who are working on this and will try to find you some better info. !PIZZA

Thanks for that ! He thought they'd just grow like crazy as most things do here but absolutely not so. I'm guessing soil and nutrients as we aren't short of sunshine!

Oh no, I really don't have knowledge about this. 😌 Will reblog the post and hopefully you'll soon find what you need. Happy Friday, @nathen007. 😊

Thank you so much. I have absolutely no idea. Everything else that gets planted here simply grows!

You have a great weekend too superstar :-)

So cool your dad got some of those free plants! That’s a piece of history. As far as your soil @anewyorkminute79 has some talent, and great advice here. Keep us updated :)

Hive Power Up Day - August 1st 2022

They look healthy and happy and grow so openly. I don't think I've ever seen an actual plant for real and I'd be curious to see it one day.

I think you already had a good amount of answers, very good ones. If I may add, yes PH and soil are important, but I've also grown in the worst conditions, with the worst soil, and it did just fine.

What it looks like from the first pictures, some of your seedlings got stunted, because of an overexposure of sun. It happens often during the heat period, and there is often no coming back.
In other word, a stunted plant might as well be pulled out because its growth process will be really hindered, to a bare minimum, and might even not produce much.

The pictures afterwards look a bit better, also Thai varieties of weed tend to have a thinner body frame, and stretchy leaves, I would try to encourage the plant to actually thrive during what we call the "growing phase" before flowering.
This is the phase where cannabis needs to be boosted with Nitrogen, and the clipping of leaves, pruning, and even sometimes something called "super croping" can encourage this growth.

Supercropping is a bit tricky but you can try as an experiment, u need to crush the stem of the cannabis plant between your fingers, just a little bit, not entirely so the plant can still stand up, but exert enough pressure so you can feel a crushing sound between your fingers.
It will indicate to the plant that there has been tares, and will now create "muscle mass", like when you do exercises, creating micro tares in your muscles. It will eventually create a knot where you have crushed, at that specific knot, the flow of nutrients is now a highway, due to the thicker stem.

The safest way to encourage growth, is to cut the top, the plant will then split up and create 2 new stems. You can reproduce this at least 4 to 5 times. Instead of one big bud, you'll have several big buds.

Also something I really forgot to mention about sun exposure. Do not let your seedlings (from sprouting to a month old) longer than 2 to 3 hours under full sunup until they reach 3 to 4 levels like they're doing on the last picture. Of course, it's all about monitoring them, checking if they're wilting under the sun, if they're standing proud, chance is, they're enjoying the sun. If you see any signs of weakness, put them in the shade for the rest of the day.

At last before I forget, always check how well moist your pot is. The rule of thumb is, ig a finger in your soil. If it's hard to the touch and doesn't go down, then your plant needs water.
If it's soft and your finger goes 1cm down, it means your plant is well watered and doesn't need more water.

As you going through the rain season, too much water could also kill your plant, create root rot, and stunt the plant too!

Once you get the first sign of "sexing" (when the plant decide to be male or female), you can take pics and tag me, I'll let ya know which one are males of females, take the male off as they aren't potent and will polenize your females and making your harvest less strong, because of the creation of seeds that takes energy away from THC production.

thank you :-) It seems its not completely decrimilaised though as the law is now under a constant state of amendment as they try and ban smoking and 'flowers'. As usual in Thailand, they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery!
