(Vegetarian) Taco Flavored Pie

in Cook and bake4 years ago (edited)

My wife decided she'd want to make a vegetarian "taco flavored pie", so I decided to document the process and create the first post in the Cook and bake -community here on Hive.

We used a ready pie dough bought from the local supermarket and we used a "vegan mince" instead of minced meat/ground beef. This can be easily replaced with meat if you prefer it.

(Vegetarian) Taco flavored pie:
400 grams of ready salty pie dough
300-400 grams of vegan mince/minced meat/ground beef
Taco spices (we have ready bags for this)
200 grams of salsa sauce
400 grams of chopped tomatoes
Beans depending on your own appetite
150 grams of grated cheese
1 dl of milk
1 egg
1 tomato
Chili, like jalapeno.

Start by frying the minced whatever you have. We're using a Finnish product "Pouttu Muu Jauhis", which stays red even when it's fried. But if you're using meat, make sure to cook it properly.

Add salsa and taco spices together and let them cook for a while.

At this point, you can set your oven to 175 degrees Celsius.

Prepare the pie dough. What can you say?
Put it in a tray in which it fits.

I'm terrible at this.

Now mix the chopped tomatoes and the beans together in the pan. Mix them well together and let them cool down a bit.

We used white beans and some green beans in our sauce. Give the sauce a taste and if it's lacking something, add more spices.

Please keep in mind that we'll still be adding some cheese and jalapeno's to the mix, but this is the best moment to taste the sauce.

Add the mince-bean-tomato-salsa -mix on the pie dough.

We had a bit too much sauce as my wife got carried away with all the beans, but we saved the extra sauce and we can use it somewhere else.

Now add the 1 deciliter of milk to a cup and break the egg in the milk. Don't add the egg shell in the milk.

As the egg is in the milk, break the egg in the milk with a fork or similar tool.

Add the milk-egg to the pie filling and mix it a bit. The egg-milk is meant to coagulate in the oven and give the pie a nice, sturdy structure.

After the milk-egg is added, you can add chopped jalapeno or other chili on the top. We put some nice red chili only on half of the pie, as our son doesn't care too much about chili.

Now the one tomato we had can be sliced and added on the top, together with the chopped chili.

The best and most important layer of this all is the cheese.

The more cheese the better. We used some grated mozzarella, but a stronger flavored variety of cheese could work too.

As the pie is now entirely covered with cheese, it's ready for oven.

45-60 minutes in an oven in temperature of 175 degrees Celsius. Remember to guard your pie, as every oven is a bit different!

If the pie is about to burn, don't leave it in the oven.

Our pie got a beautiful tan in the oven.

As we cut the first piece from the oven, you can see how good the pie looks like. The pie dough looks a tad bit raw, but this might be due to the moisture of tomatoes and salsa sauce.

No matter the beautiful looks, the pie also tasted wonderful. We're doing good as we didn't eat even half of it all, so we're prepared to enjoy some more pie tomorrow.

Sort:

It looks good even though as a picky eater I would exclude like half of the ingredients. xD
But na, it looks good!

It does look good and the beauty is that you should be able to build a suitable pie for any taste. At least for almost any taste.

I could try to do that with only beans instead of any mince in it, but that would just be too scary for some.
