After these first two articles which you may have seen, I wanted to continue sharing some stories of my art-hanging profession. You can find these articles here and there. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank @livinguktaiwan for telling me about this community centered around the world of work. There were communities around particular fields, science, art, but nothing that was essentially related to the primary idea of work... So this is a great addition to the platform ! Thanks '
I've built this article as a separate entity, but it might be a good idea to check out the two previous articles to learn more and get a more global idea !
But let's get to the point ! I've put these experiences in different muées or institutions in chronological order, just so you know ^^

My first experience was in this museum in the south of Paris, not far from Vitry.
I had the chance to work directly with the artist, notably on this work below, construction site barriers - here, riot barriers - full of stones as if thrown by a discontented crowd.
I really liked this working relationship, which meant that we could also talk about other areas of our lives... What was interesting was that I didn't know this artist's work yet, which allowed me to discover it in a real situation.
For the little story, I was working with a company of rather dishonest people at the time... This museum is the exact opposite of where I live in Paris and I took 1h45 in the morning and again in the evening to get there. By the end of the exhibition, I had worked almost 30 hours of overtime and the manager didn't want to pay me (or the other members of the team), all because two people were systematically late... I was there 10 minutes early every day haha ! Never received it, lol
There were quite different works, using quite different materials. Below, you will see this city made of fridges covered with mirror mosaics like skyscrapers or bares of buildings lit by the setting sun.
I do not tell you the mission to move all these fridges and to put them on top of each other for the bigger ones !

There, they are Arabic breadcrumbs stuck in plasterboard walls... The title of the installation is "Integration".
Paris Photo at the Grand Palais in 2019
First experience of art fairs for this big gathering of photography in Paris. In truth, it was quite different from the atmosphere you find in a museum because there were over 200 galleries from all over the world and each one had their own transporters and teams of hangers-on. I was still a beginner and I must say that I was quite impressed !
That's why I almost didn't take any other pictures than these ones, pictures of ancient monuments, still in their blister pack, or how to create a work of art in pictures and link past and present, antiquity and modern world...
The Louvre
I've talked about it a lot in my previous articles, but we weren't hooked in this famous museum. We were doing maintenance work but as the pace was very slow and it was usually on Tuesday, the day the museum is closed, we had time to look at the works, without anyone else... A real luxury !
It was at this time that I fell in love with this "Still life with figs" by Luis Melendez (1716-1780) which I always went to see on each of my visits !
But it's not only the works of art to be observed... The architecture and the works of art are also honored, as you can see with these details of portals !
Opéra Garnier
As you will have understood, this work is an opportunity to be in contact with famous, unknown and grandiose works, but also to be in places where one does not usually have the opportunity to be.
This time, it was at the Opéra Garnier, for an exhibition on music. The works were portraits of 19th century musicians, most of them painted by unknown people, at least by the general public.
But it was especially the occasion to be able, between two paintings, to walk in the completely empty big room... and that was really worth it !
To give you an idea, the paintings were all more or less like this :

Auction sales
This time in an auction room. An interesting detail is that the same works of art are not at all considered in the same way as in museums. Here, they are mostly, I would say, artistic goods... It's a bit sad sometimes, but that didn't stop me from being interested and nourished by what I saw. Especially since they were objects from Oceania, masks, maces, spears, pieces of jewellery and other ornaments. This brings us back to the birth of Cubism, but it is not really from this Western eye that I generally refer to... I don't really like dubious interpretations of other people's cultures. There is domination that I disapprove of and I prefer to be content with seeing and contemplating !
Above is a representation of the Crab God from the Mochica people in Peru. Below, it is a necklace made of sperm whale teeth from the Fiji Islands... Seeing this, it leaves you dreaming !
There you all had a series of beautifully crafted ritual spears and just looking at them, I remember thinking that I hadn't wasted my day !
Technical considerations
At this point in the article, I realize that I haven't necessarily talked much about the more technical and practical aspects of the job, but that's probably for two reasons.
The first is that it's not the most interesting. Basically, you have to hang straight. The second is that once you've got the hang of it, you're more interested in what you're hanging than how you're hanging.
Don't misunderstand this. I have to hang well, that's my job, but I've been doing this for enough years to do it knowing immediately if what I've done is right or wrong and I have to say that even before I drill a hole, I've thought it through !
For example, this is good :
But, this is a complete failure...! As I was trained as a craftsman, I must say that I am very fussy. This is not the case with all my colleagues, because we all come from very different backgrounds. Some of us are artists, others have only been hanging for years and others have just graduated from school.
But I try to be as diplomatic as possible ^^.
We often use lasers, but I have to admit I much prefer bubble levels. No need for batteries or adjusting the height of a stand... It's purely physical and I like it !
For me, laser levels are mostly a photo opportunity haha !
Lights
One of the other things I particularly like to see (and take pictures of) are the lights and the lighting moods. When these are set up, after we have hung up... or when we have already hung down.
I like to see these forms of lights floating without anything else to illuminate other than the emptiness of the wall. A wall of light and shadow...
Let's finish with this thumbnail of César, an artist of the New Realists, this movement of the 60s. This one was in storage in a big museum and it's always interesting to see the works according to their place of implementation. That, plus the fact that you can glean details that you never or hardly ever see as a visitor !

Après ces deux premiers articles que vous avez peut-être vu, je voulais continuer à partager certaines histoires de mon métier d'accrocheur d'art. Vous trouverez ces articles ici et là. J'en profite pour remercier @livinguktaiwan de m'avoir parlé de cette communauté centrée autour de l'univers du travail. Il y avait bien des communautés autour de domaines particuliers, la science, l'art, mais rien qui soit essentiellement en rapport avec l'idée première de travail... C'est donc un excellent ajout sur la plateforme !
J'ai construit cet article comme une entité à part entière, mais ça peut être une bonne idée d'aller voir les deux articles précédents pour en savoir plus et avoir une idée plus globale !
Mais venons en au fait ! Je vous ai mis ces expériences dans différents muées ou institutions par ordre chronologique, juste pour que vous le sachiez ^^

Ma première expérience était donc dans ce musée du sud de Paris, non loin de Vitry.
J'ai eu la chance de travailler en direct avec l'artiste, notamment sur cette oeuvre ci-dessous, des barrières de chantiers - ici, anti-émeutes - pleines de cailloux comme projetés par une foule mécontente.
J'ai beaucoup aimé cette relation de travail, privilégiée donc, qui faisait que nous pouvions échanger aussi sur d'autres domaines de nos vies... Ce qui était intéressant, c'est que je ne connaissais pas encore le travail de cet artiste, ce qui m'a permit de le découvrir en situation réelle.
Pour la petite histoire, je travaillais alors avec une entreprise de gens assez malhonnêtes à ce moment là... Ce musée est à l'exact opposé d'où je vis à Paris et je prenais 1h45 le matin et de nouveau le soir pour m'y rendre. À la fin du montage de l'exposition, j'avais fait pas loin de 30 heures supplémentaires et la responsable n'a pas voulu me les payer (comme aux autres membres de l'équipe), tout cela parce que deux personnes arrivaient eux, systématiquement en retard... Moi, j'étais là avec 10 minutes d'avance tous les jours haha !
Il y avait des oeuvres assez différentes, mettant en jeu des matériaux eux aussi très différents. Ci dessous, vous verrez cette ville en frigidaires recouverts de mosaïques de miroir comme des gratte-ciels ou des bares d'immeubles éclairés par le soleil couchant.
Je ne vous dis pas la mission de déplacer tous ces frigidaires et de les mettre les uns sur les autres pour les plus grands !

Là, ce sont des galettes de pains arabes fichées dans des murs en plaques de placoplâtre... Le titre de l'installation est "Intégration"
Paris Photo au Grand Palais en 2019
Première expérience de foires d'art pour ce grand rassemblement de la photographie à Paris. En vérité, c'est assez différent de l'ambiance que l'on trouve dans un musée car il y avait plus de 200 galeries du monde entier et chacune avait leur transporteurs et leurs équipes d'accrocheurs. Je débutais encore et je dois dire que cela m'avais assez impressionné !
Raison pour laquelle je n'ai presque pas pris d'autres images que celles-ci, des photo de monuments antiques, encore sous leur blister, ou comment créer une oeuvre en image et lié passé et présent, antiquité et monde moderne...
Le Louvre
J'en ai pas mal parlé dans mes articles précédents, mais nous n'accrochions pas dans ce musée célèbre entre tous. Nous faisions des missions de maintenance mais comme le rythme était très tranquille et que c'était généralement le mardi, le jour où le musée est fermé, nous avions le temps de regarder les oeuvres, sans personne... Un véritable luxe !
C'est à cette époque que je me suis épris de cette "Nature morte aux figues" de Luis Melendez (1716-1780) que je ne manquais pas d'aller voir à chacune de mes visites !
Mais il n'y a pas que les oeuvres à observer... L'architecture et les ouvrages d'art sont aussi à l'honneur, comme vous pourrez le voir avec ces détails de portails !
Opéra Garnier
Comme vous l'aurez compris, ce travail est l'occasion d'être au contact d'oeuvres célèbres, méconnues et grandioses, mais aussi de se trouver dans des lieux où l'on a pas l'occasion de se trouver habituellement.
Cette fois-ci, c'était à l'Opéra Garnier, pour une exposition sur la musique. Les oeuvres étaient donc des portraits de musiciens du 19ème siècle peints pour la plupart, par des inconnus, en tout cas du grands publics.
Mais ça avait surtout été l'occasion de pouvoir, entre deux tableaux, se promener dans la grande salle complètement vide... et ça pour le coup, ça valait vraiment le coup !
Pour que vous vous fassiez une idée, les tableaux étaient tous plus ou moins comme celui-ci :
Là, c'est un détail du plafond en dôme d'une salle de réception, la salle de la Nuit...
Ventes aux enchères
Cette fois-ci dans une salle de ventes aux enchères. Un détail intéressant, c'est que les mêmes oeuvres d'art ne sont pas du tout considérées de la même manière que dans les musées. Ici, ce sont surtout je dirais, des marchandises artistiques... C'est un peu triste parfois, mais cela ne pas empêché de m'intéresser et de me nourrir à ce que je voyait. D'autant qu'il s'agissait d'objets de l'Océanie, des masques, des masses, des lances, des bijoux et autres parties de parures. Cela nous ramène à la naissance du Cubisme, mais ce n'est pas vraiment de cet oeil occidental que je me réfère généralement... J'aime assez peu les interprétations douteuses sur les cultures des autres. Il y a de la domination que je réprouve et je préfère me contenter de voir et de contempler !
Ci-dessus, c'est une représentation du Dieu Crabe du peuple Mochica au Pérou. En dessous, il s'agit d'un collier en dents de cachalot des Îles Fidji... En voyant cela, ça laisse tout de même rêveur !
Là, vous aviez toutes une série de lances rituelles, magnifiquement ouvragées et rien de les voir, je me rappelle que je m'étais dit que je n'avais pas perdu ma journée !
Aspects Techniques
À ce moment de l'article, je me rends compte que je n'ai pas forcément beaucoup parlé des aspects les plus techniques et pratiques du métier, mais c'est sûrement pour deux raisons.
La première, c'est que ce n'est pas le plus intéressant. Grosso modo, il faut accrocher droit. La seconde c'est, dès que l'on a capté ce qu'il faut faire pour cela, que l'on s'intéresse plus à ce que l'on accroche qu'à la manière dont on le fait.
Ne comprenez pas cela de travers. Je dois bien accrocher, c'est mon travail, mais je fais cela depuis assez d'années pour le faire en sachant immédiatement si ce que j'ai fait est bien ou non et je dois dire que même avant de percer un trou, j'ai bien réfléchi à la question !
Par exemple, là c'est bien :
Mais, là, c'est complètement raté...! Comme j'ai une formation d'artisan à la base, je dois dire que je suis très pointilleux. Ce qui n'est pas le cas de tous mes collègue, car nous venons tous d'horizons très divers. Certains sont artistes, d'autres ne font que de l'accrochages depuis des années et d'autres enfin sortent tout juste de l'école.
Mais j'essaie d'être le plus diplomate ^^
Nous utilisons souvent des lasers, mais je dois reconnaître que je préfère de loin les niveaux à bulles. Pas besoins de piles ou de régler la hauteur d'un pied... C'est purement physique et cela me va bien !
Pour le coup, les niveaux lasers pour moi, c'est surtout l'occasion de prendre des photos haha !
Lumières
Une des autres choses que j'aime particulièrement voir (et prendre en photo) ce sont les lumières et les ambiances lumineuses. Lorsque celles-ci sont mises en place, après que l'on ai accroché... ou bien lorsque nous avons déjà décroché !
J'aime voir ces formes de lumières flotter sans plus rien à éclairer d'autres que le vide du mur. Un pan de mur d'ombre et de lumière...
Terminons par ce pouce de César, un artiste de la Nouveaux Réalistes, ce mouvement des années 60. Celui-ci était dans le stockage d'un grand musée et c'est toujours intéressant de voir les oeuvres selon leur endroit d'implementation. Cela, plus le fait de pouvoir glaner des détails que l'on ne voit jamais ou presque en tant que visiteurs !

These art work are incredibly beautiful, I was just staring at the sperm whale teeth, lolz. It's always a good thing when you are around people who have similar knowledge as you, you get to learn new things when you are around them. I'm very sure you were able to add a lot to your knowledge.
The art hanging seems like one that needs a lot of calculations, I guess you must be really good at mathematics, hehe, that's by the way though.
I was wondering, how long does it take to complete a hang? Was that you hanging the art on the wall?

It’s indeed a great way to learn more at every mission... After, it’s not much mathematic, just few formulas to calculate the right position of the hooks and of the artwork on the wall ! This is even more logical than really mathematical, like a recipe finally :)
No, it’s a colleague of the same company... I’ve this thing that I never want to be on pictures... except from close by people !
Concerning the time, it can be done quite quickly or way longer, but it’s generally around 10/15 minutes, just for the hanging... Sometimes more depending on the presentation of the artwork !
