Some time ago, I took you to the Aligre market, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris. It's one of my favorites for its atmosphere and the fact that you can find a well-stocked flea market there almost every day of the week.
But I also have a history with this one, the Marché des Enfants-Rouges, where I used to go shopping when I lived in the neighborhood. This market is in the northern part of the Marais district, on the border with République, where you find the square of the same name. Wherever you come from, it is very central and accessible.
The Marché des Enfants-Rouges is one of the oldest covered markets in the city. It was created in 1615 by Marguerite de Navarre for orphans whose uniform was red at the time. It's as simple as that... ^^
Although it was classified as a historical monument in 1982, it was almost destroyed in 1994 to build a car park. Fortunately, this building site did not take place and it would have been a real loss to see such a place, active and alive for more than 400 years, destroyed !
When I arrived, it was lunchtime and it was quite crowded. I don't particularly like having my picture taken and I think most Parisians do. So I had to play with my skills to get some usable pictures, but I still managed :)
Indeed, in addition to the stalls of greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers and florists, there are a lot of small restaurants where you can buy to take away as well as eat in. There are several Lebanese caterers, one or two Italian ones, two or three French restaurants, cafés and many more ! If you are the type of person who doesn't know what to choose, this is a good place for you.
When you enter, you come across this small florist's stall with a café terrace with an informal and friendly atmosphere...
Entering the covered halls. I love these metal structures, that alone takes you straight into another era! As everyone is eating, I'm lucky enough to have the aisles a bit empty for some rather clean shots.
I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but I did stop to chat a bit with the greengrocer at this organic fruit and vegetable stall.
What finally caught my eye was this extra-fresh ginger, you rarely see ginger like this, at least in Paris, elsewhere in the world, it's a bit obvious...
So I bought a few grams of it, just for an herbal tea, and I must say I didn't regret it !
All in all, there are three exits, two in the rue de Bretagne and one on the side... I like this type of place where all the space is optimized, full but still orderly !
Literally two steps away, I did not expect to come across a small shared garden, a small oasis of nature nestled between the buildings and the market. On the sign it says that it is possible to visit with a member. I called a couple of times, but unfortunately no one seemed to be there. That's for another time !
Seeing fresh food and people enjoying themselves, I started to get hungry myself and my choice was for a panini at an Italian deli - Pastavino - which is also very close to the market. It's a place where I used to have a habit, so whenever I'm back in the neighborhood, I systematically drop by to get the latest news and food.
Nothing to do with the basic paninis with white and soft bread, here we are on a competition sandwich ^^. Tender and crunchy bread, well toasted and quality products !

Il y a quelques temps, je vous avais emmenés au marché d'Aligre, dans le XIIème arrondissement de Paris. C'est un de mes préférés pour son ambiance et le fait qu'on y trouve presque tous les jours de la semaine, une brocante bien achalandée.
Mais j'ai aussi un historique avec celui-là, le marché des Enfants-Rouges, dans lequel je venais faire mes courses lorsque j'habitais dans le quartier. Ce marché se trouve dans la partie nord du quartier du Marais, à la frontière avec celui de République où l'on trouve la place du même nom. D'où que vous veniez, c'est très central et accessible.
Le marché des Enfants-Rouges est un des plus vieux marchés couverts de la ville. Il a été crée en 1615 par Marguerite de Navarre pour des orphelins dont l'uniforme d'alors était rouge. C'est aussi simple que cela... ^^
Malgré qu'il ai été classé monument historique en 1982, il a failli être détruit en 1994 pour construire un parking. Heureusement, ce chantier n'a pas eu lieu et c'aurait été une véritable perte de voir détruit un tel endroit, actif et vivant depuis plus de 400 ans !
Lorsque je suis arrivé, c'était l'heure du déjeuner et c'était assez grouillant de monde. Je n'aime pas particulièrement être pris en photo et je crois que c'est le cas de la majorité des Parisiens. J'ai dû donc jouer d'habilité pour avoir quelques images exploitables, mais j'y suis tout de même parvenu :)
En effet, en plus des étals de primeurs, bouchers, poissonniers et fleuristes, on trouve un grand nombre de petits restaurants dans lesquels on peut aussi bien acheter à emporter que manger sur place. Il y a plusieurs traiteurs libanais, un ou deux italiens, deux ou trois restaurants français, cafés et encore quantité d'autres ! Si vous êtes du genre à ne pas savoir que choisir, c'est un bon endroit pour vous.
Lorsqu'on rentre, on tombe sur ce petit étal de fleuriste que prolonge une terrasse de café à l'ambiance informelle et sympathique...
Entrée dans les halles couvertes. J'adore ces structures en métal, rien que cela, ça vous plonge directement dans une autre époque ! Comme tout le monde est en train de manger, j'ai la chance d'avoir les allées un peu vides pour quelques clichés plutôt épurés !
Je ne cherchais rien en particulier, mais je me suis tout de même arrêter pour bavarder un peu avec le primeur de cet étal de fruits et légumes bio.
Ce qui a fini par attirer mon regard, c'est ce gingembre extra-frais, on en vois rarement du comme cela, en tout cas à Paris, ailleurs dans le monde, c'est un peu évident...
J'en ai donc acheté quelques grammes, rien que pour une tisane et je dois dire que je ne l'ai pas regretté !
En tout et pour tout, on trouve trois sorties, deux dans la rue de Bretagne et une sur le côté... J'aime ce type d'endroit où toute la place est optimisée, pleine mais quand même ordonnée !
À littéralement deux pas, je ne m'attendais pas à tomber sur un petit jardin partagé, une petite oasis de nature nichée entre les immeubles et le marché. Sur la pancarte, il est écrit qu'il est possible de visiter avec un adhérent. J'ai appelé deux-trois fois, mais malheureusement, personne ne semblait présent. Ce sera pour une prochaine fois !
À force de voir des produits frais et des gens se régaler, j'ai moi-même commencé à avoir assez faim et mon choix s'est fait pour un panini dans un traiteur italien - Pastavino - qui est aussi très près du marché. C'est un endroit où j'avais mes habitudes, alors dès que je reviens dans le quartier, j'y passe systématiques pour prendre les nouvelles et me restaurer.
Rien avoir avec les paninis de base au pain blanc et mou, là on est sur un sandwich de compétition ^^ Du pain tendre et croquant, bien grillé et des produits de qualités !
J'espère que vous aurez apprécié cette plongée dans ce très beau marché, j'aurai aimé avoir plus d'images à vous proposer, mais en même temps, j'imagine que cela aura plus aiguisé votre curiosité si vous vous rendez à Paris.

I love the food markets in France! I like just wandering around, even though I am not buying anything. We have a big market in Leicester, supposedly the oldest market in England, and the largest covered market in Europe, but it looks a little sad sometimes. What I like here is that often there's a kind of mini-market of fresh fruit and vegetables outside convenience stores and corner shops. Often it is very fresh and caters to the local population, which will vary depending where you are.
Yes, it’s a really nice place just to wander... I often have a tour without buying anything, just buying with the eyes haha !
The one your talking about must be quite impressive and amazing, maybe too vast and so, sometimes a bit sad as you said.
When there is a combination with a flea market in addition to the food one, this is just perfect !

I do miss markets like this. I lived in London for a few years and do miss certain ones. Markets are a lot smaller where I am now, but it's mostly all local produce which I do love xxxx
I understand your feeling, but I think that although these markets are beautiful and tempting because of the diversity of their products, the ones you frequent now are much more sustainable !
But I admit that from time to time, it is quite pleasant... Even the more time goes by, the more I realize that even though I live in the city, I don't consume anything useless anymore... Just basics, tools and food.

I love reading about Europeon food markets. Literally start to salivate. To get similiar experience we have to drive 1.5 hours away to Melbourne markets.
If you are as far away as that, I can easily imagine !
