That Friday when we Visited a Real Estate in Normandy - Review of the Little Town of Bernay [EN - FR]

in Market Fridaylast year (edited)

Hello everyone, I hope you are well !

Today we left the city by train for Normandy, towards the sea, but not to the coast either... No, we stopped in the small town of Bernay.

We left from the Gare St Lazare in the north west of Paris, in the middle of the morning. Travel time announced (and respected) : 1h30.

Thank you @dswigle for this #MarketFriday community and in advance, forgive me for going a bit overboard, but isn't the property market like any other? Certainly with its specificities and details...!

On the train, I continued reading this excellent book by Robert MacFarlane that my girlfriend recently gave me. A book about roads, paths and tracks, mainly in England. I really like his sophisticated, direct, poetic and practical style.

I really recommend it to all lovers of walking and nature !

First view of the countryside (shared with @riverflows as a preview ;-) and arrival in the small brick station of Bernay. I think for the region, it's quite a big town (25,000 inhabitants).

As soon as we get off the train, we meet the very friendly estate agent who will take us to the house... First views of the surroundings through the car windows.

The Thiberville war memorial.

IMG_2919.JPG

We arrived at this magnificent house, typical of the Normandy region. I confess, it is really for the size of the land (1,6 hectare), its half-timberings and its wisteria that we wanted to visit it.

IMG_2925.jpg

IMG_2923.JPG

A view with a little more distance, from the back of the field...

IMG_2932.JPG

The neighbour's sheep tending the field - half-curious and half-fearful. On the second, a small sheepfold also on the land, but in rather poor condition.

IMG_2936.jpg

IMG_2938.JPG

But let's go inside... The whole place, although clean and not humid at all (which is rare for the region) is rather old-fashioned, but that's what we prefer rather than soulless kitchens with spotlights on the ceiling and plaster walls... After all, everyone has his own taste ^^ !

I'll tell you later my conclusion of the visit.

IMG_2945.JPG

IMG_2953.JPG

IMG_2956.JPG

Apparently I found a fellow canner haha !

IMG_3011.JPG

Why we won't buy this house...
  • The price is too high, even without taking into account the necessary works.
  • It was September 30th at 1pm and the sun was not showing its nose and remained behind the trees. So imagine in the middle of winter (bad orientation ! I think that both humans and plants need light.
  • In the end, we will try to move closer to the south of Paris to be closer to my partner's parents. It seems more obvious and practical on reflection. Family is like the sun.
Positive points :
  • It was our first visit. The atmosphere was excellent and the weather was good.
  • It gives us food for thought and will enable us to be more efficient in the future.
  • We were able to visit the small and charming neighboring town (through which we arrived and of which I will be able to give you a little tour in the second part of this article...

Without further ado, let's start this visit of Bernay !

IMG_2967.jpg

A beautiful river runs alongside the pedestrian and old quarter where we had lunch.

IMG_2971.JPG

A great flea market where we only bought with our eyes !

I hesitated for some of these bells as I collect them, but all were too expensive !

IMG_2972.JPG

Two views of the interior of the traditional bistro where we ate. A very good meal that gave us the energy we needed for the end of the day.

IMG_2973.JPG

IMG_2974.JPG

Then begins a reportage of all these half-timbered buildings. I focused mainly on the top of these houses for several reasons. The first is that I think this is the most interesting part. The second is that the lower part at street level was often occupied by shops with rather uninteresting signs, not very beautiful or generic like phone shops which basically nobody cares about !

IMG_2975.jpg

IMG_2976.JPG

IMG_2977.jpg

At the end of the street, the church tower which we did not have time to visit !

IMG_2981.JPG

IMG_2984.JPG

IMG_2986.JPG

IMG_2990.jpg

Let's finish this visit at a run, with a glimpse of Bernay Abbey, which we would have liked to enter. The door was open, but an exhibition was being set up. So we contented ourselves with a quick look inside and a tour of the beautiful building.

IMG_3018.JPG

IMG_3017.JPG

IMG_3016.jpg

So, this is where this visit ends, and a bit abruptly. There are several reasons for this: I ran out of phone battery until I got back on the train in the rain and because I slept for half the journey ^^ !

I hope nevertheless that this overview of the region will have given you, like me, the desire, if not to go back there, then to discover it !

I'm sure you have some advice about real estate and I'd be delighted if you could share it with us ;-)

Do not hesitate to ask for more details on parts of this article. I thank you for reading and wish you a very good weekend !

Take care of yourself <3
