Market Friday goes to the Nursery (again) (again)

in Market Friday3 years ago (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways and I hope for you also. This week, I went to the local nursery to buy flowers. It is that time of year again! My favorite time! Time to give more plants to the garden! Let's go to Merrifield's!!

We are quickly heading into the warmer months. We are already into the warmer months. Have you got your garden or balcony pots started? If you have, I need a garden update!

Market Friday nusery.jpg

This is one of the many nurseries in the metro area. Today we will go to the one in Falls Church. It is acres and acres big and goes on for almost forever. It has several covered areas, one has all the perennial flowers (flowers that come back on their own, year after year) and another that has annual flowers. (Flowers that die off after the growing season ends) It is privately owned and operated by an exceptionally nice family. They have three stores in the Washington, DC area and I chose the one that is the closest to me today because they have the most variety, always! The people they employ there are very knowledgeable and have taught me much useful information regarding my gardens. Two of the employees teach me little photography tricks and one girl gives me tips on life. (Some are pretty good too!) So, it is really a one-stop-shop of sorts. Did I mention that they have a knick-knack shot too along with their garden supplies?

Merrifield Garden Center: 8132 Lee Hwy., Falls Church, Virginia 22042. Close enough to the District to make it convenient and far enough away to give them some land to put it on. A match made in heaven, yes? I could #MarketFriday here every week. It is one of my favorite places to go.

The variety of plants is staggering, an abundant presence of thriving beauty, being in bloom. The plants are usually very healthy-looking and are watered and cleaned up to look fresh. Most everything looks like they just got it off the delivery truck.

The staff has great customer service skills, they are friendly and very knowledgeable, a huge plus for the days I don't have a clue. They help select plants for the type of garden you have. Mine is very eclectic, having a little bit of everything in it.

20210505_114607.jpg

I love the geranium, especially the Ivy variety. Whereas the regular geraniums grow tall and upright, the Ivy Geranium hangs down and makes for a lovely sight. The regular geranium has soft leaves and the Ivy have a smaller and waxy/shiny leaf. I love planting them in window boxes that sit on the sills and let them grow long all summer long.

Things to think about: Always consider the shape of the plant when choosing one. It should be nicely shaped for the kind that it is. Consider the sunlight/shade you have in your yard and pick varieties in accordance. Consider your space and think about how much time you have for the upkeep of your garden.

Center Crest.png

Now that I have bought all that I needed there, I come home and plant them, but, only after the sun has started to go down. I never plant in the middle of the day once it gets warm. It seems the plants do much better when they are planted in the early evening. These are the Ivy Geraniums I chose to put in my window boxes. I brought them back from Germany with me and have used them every year.

I bought a few different kinds of petunias and I have a three-tiered planter that is on my front porch, overflowing with a variety of flowers. I planted petunias in pink and yellow on the top basket.

20210505_094038.jpg

Here is the bottom two tiers of the basket. The flowers have been in a few weeks now and are starting to flow out of the basket. It will get a lot bigger before summer is over and a few of them I may need to take out and put somewhere else, it is the first time I have put those purple ones in and they are growing bigger than desired. So, we will see how it all grows in. Eclectic and true, these flowers seem to be just like me. I am happy with the way they came out. A little bit of everything mixed together.

If you were looking for herbs, they were 50% off. I needed more basil and thyme. The rest of them, I had already started a while back. So now I was complete. Has anyone noticed how expensive herbs and spices have gotten??

Here is my parsley, all chopped up. This was the first one I started and unfortunately, my basil didn't make it. I think I pinched it back too much.

I am intrigued by different cultures. It is exciting and yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace, or even an art gallery, a kite festival! Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! Mine almost never is! You can use the Market Friday Community page #hive-196308, but, please put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere in your post. Thank you so much.

#MarketFriday Loves you!

It actually is a Japanese Maple in the first picture. Roots, ball, and all! Not only is it ready to be shipped, but, when I was there yesterday, it was gone! Now, I am not saying it is headed your way or not, but, I would wait out front in the driveway, just in case.

You wouldn't want to miss it! Thanks for dropping your link! You know how I hate chasing them down! Much appreciated!

Yeah, its quite hot and warm day starting at the middle of the may, seems like little bit unusual. Its alwalys being charming for mind to walking in the garden, your garden that in the post contain lots of flowers, and flowers always help us to keep happy and refreshing mind, have a great day with your market Friday.

https://hive.blog/marketfriday/@sheikh27/market-friday-at-night-at

It truly has been warm, especially in the middle of the day, almost summer-like temperatures. Flowers do a great job of keeping my soul happy and refreshing me with a good outlook.

Thank you for the good wishes and for dropping your #MarketFriday post! Much appreciated!

Wow! this is a really awesome place. I would probably go there all the time, as if to a park ;) You bought beautiful flowers and your multi-tiered flowerpot looks very effective. I can imagine how beautiful it will be when the flowers gain strength! growing herbs spices like basil, dill, parsley, etc. is a very good idea !!! in Israel, a small handle of parsley or cilantro costs $ 1. that's why I've been thinking for a long time learning to grow it myself on the balcony
https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@tali72/buying-an-impudent-ginger-cat

Hi. Tali! @tali72 I do go to the nursery as often as I can! It is such a wonderfully diverse place with bird feeders, water fountains, and mountains of flowers and veggies and herb plants.

I am looking forward to the flowers gaining strength and becoming lush, beautiful specimens adorning the porch. Believe it or not, most times our herbs are expensive here too, so I do grow most of my own. That is the first time my basil has failed, but, I bought a replacement and I am hoping whatever it is, won't happen again! Growing it on the balcony is a very popular way to grow herbs. In the winter, I grow them on the windowsill. Thank you so much for dropping the link!!! I appreciate it!

I found this from the Wayfair Company, it is a self-watering balcony planter. It is just an idea.

I love your daisies! They are so beautiful, just like you! 💖 The flowers have happy little faces, yes? I think that I could buy flowers every day. They cheer up the house and give a smile to my face.

I went to your post and read it already! I love, love, love it. It is so full of joy. It makes my sad face happy. Thank you for that. You spread the love, wherever you go, whatever you do.

Love to you, my beautiful friend! Besos!

Hanging baskets on your patio are starting to take full bloom, brilliant mix of colour Denise. Nursery run by families are what we have here, always informative and friendly, need to visit my local one soon.

Did you know the Geranium originated in South Africa? So a little something that has traveled extensively and popular world-wide now.

Sunshine and glorious flower wishes to you, have a magic day!

I love the nurseries that are run by families, they are always the best. I really dislike those big chain stores where you are just an employee trying to make your way in the world.

I had no idea the Geranium originated in South Africa, and now, you have piqued my curiosity, and I need to go look it up. Thank you so much for sharing that tidbit of information!

Thank you so much for the wishes! I hope your days was amazing also!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Supporting family run, I have found all members working have been trained, always happy to assist when you look for additional information. Large stores staff hardly ever have knowledge about what they selling.

Geranium has become an international plant, especially loved for hanging baskets in Europe not many know the secret, they from down here originally.

Overnight rain has dropped our temperature for a day or two, blissful for me who thoroughly enjoys cooler weather. Happy Saturday Denise.

I learn something new every day on here!

Ohh I know how you love place sliek this and with your beautiful shots you do it justice

Were not doing to much with ourgarden this year just a few pots we planted seeds in that seem to be coming along OK, Lulus taking it easy this season but lets see what next year brings

Her eis my post for this week https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@tattoodjay/market-friday-my-new-desk-and-photo-editing-setup

I am glad to hear that Lulu is taking it easy. There is always next year and a few pots splashed with a few seeds are more than enough.

I do love places like this, they are always full of sunshine and usually, the people in them love their jobs. So, it makes for a great atmosphere.

Thank you for dropping the link on here! It is much appreciated! Did I tell you I really like your desk setup? I do!

#MarketFriday loves you!

I must admit I am loving my new setup
Added a couple of dragon models to it

Yes I must admit Lulu is more into gardening than I am so I don’t mind the break this year

Hi! Here is my link! It seems we have the same idea about flowers this week!lol

https://ecency.com/hive-148441/@kaminchan/market-friday-going-to-flower

Thanks for dropping the link to your post! It is much appreciated and isn't that funny that we both migrate towards flowers so many times??

:))

#MarketFriday loves you!

Love how much color you have in the basket planter.

I have mostly just a view of green plants. Speaking of which I need to take some photos my tomato plants. They are going to be taller than me soon if not already.

I love to have an explosion of the sense with color! Oh, yes! You better got on those tomatoes, especially if you are doing a garden journal! It is always amazing how it slowly grows until suddenly, one day when you weren't looking, you have tomatoes.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your words! I appreciate it! I hope you have an amazing weekend!

Hi Denise - @dswigle!
As always, wonderful flowers! Did you grow your own parsley? Did I understand correctly that the basil did not take root?

Hi, Leyla! @leylar Thank you so much! I did grow the parsley and that was the first time I got to use it and it was delicious! :)

The basil was growing and died. :( I have never had that happen before, but, perhaps I snipped it too close when I was gathering some.

Always good to see you here! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

I sowed the seeds of parsley and basil too All seeds have germinated. To my regret, the basil died for some reason. 😞🌱 I have to reseed

Thank you ! All is well, the rains are over today it is sunny and warm.🌤

I did the same. Reseeded. :) Better luck to us, for the next time!

Oh, yes! We are walking on sunshine today! Have a lovely Sunday!

Nice images D.
That first one really popped on the thumbnail, love that tree O.o
Also I am so very glad that nursery is far far away from me lol
I tend to spend a little too... OK way too much at the little nurseries and garden centers here as it is.

Me too!!! I love flowers and trees! Heck, I even love bushes! I have two of those Japanese Maples, flanking my front walk. They were tiny and now they have grown to about 10 feet in a couple of years. They won't get much bigger.

I have never met a garden center I didn't love.

I must report that somewhere I picked up a plant with aphids. :( Everyone is under quarantine and I am treating them. What a failure as a caregiver. Pfft!

Wow.. Nice mix planting with double tiers.. Looking forwards to see how they growing.
Thank you Denise. Love #MarketFriday and @dswigle!

Thank you so much @cherryng !! I show two tiers, but, it is actually three. :)) I will be sure to show its progress!

Thank you for stopping by!

I love this initiative and although I can't participate for now, your words make it clear how excited you are to learn about different cultures. Beautiful photos, thank you for them.

This message is very important:

Always remember, kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

Have a nice weekend 🍹

My virtual hug ♥

It is true! I am very excited to learn about different cultures and what better way than from the people themselves! Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words. Some day you will be able to participate and I look forward to when you do.

Kindness always counts. Indeed. I hope you have an amazing weekend!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Sure, I already wrote down in my agenda: Photos for #MarketFriday :)
I hope I can join in, according to the flexible and radical weeks because of quarantine. Some weeks are flexible which means less restriction for work area and mobility and when it's radical it means more restriction.

I wish you a great day ☕️

Thank you! You too!

Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.

If only I would have the money for that.
The Hungarian politicians should try to live with this $250 per month pension-like income. The EU or someone should do something about the financial discrimination in our country.
Anything below the minimum wage ($550 USD per month) should not be allowed. Nowadays I also work in a 4 hours per day part time job, but my income still does not reach the minimum wage.
