Market Friday takes the Metro

in Market Friday2 years ago (edited)

I have always been a fan of architecture and this Beaux-Arts-styled building is no exception. Welcome to Washington Union Station, located at 50 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, DC, just blocks from the US Capitol Building. Union Station is home to the Amtrak passenger railroad, bus station, the terminal for the DC Streetcar, and the VRE lite rail commuter trains, Metro subway systems for both Virginia, and Maryland. It is, for all practical purposes, referred to as the transportation hub.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see so many different markets and different cultures.

0P2A8189a.JPG

I appreciate the signage they have throughout the station. Easy to navigate, for restrooms, tickets, and food. Even when you come in on one train and need to switch to another, it is well marked so that you can make your way to the next leg of your journey. If you live locally, I don't need to explain any of this to you. You have been through here hundreds of times.

I am fascinated and curious by different cultures and I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be in the grocery store, the local marketplace, or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! Don't forget to use the hashtags #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

I own a car. Actually, I own two, however, I use public transportation whenever I can. It is fast, easy and I don't have to park the car or circle the wagon, looking for a place to put it down. If I am downtown and it gets to be late o'clock, I will be taking a taxi home. There is a limit to how late those conductors drive their trains. So, it is not the perfect science, but, it works pretty well for me.

How do you get around? Hoof it or drive your car? Do you take a car when you go somewhere or do you try to take advantage of public transportation? To be honest with you, the fares have gone up so much, I cannot believe it. The standard fare for the Metro during peak house is $2.25 - $6.00 during Peak hours. This depends on how far out you are on the Beltway. Off Peak is $2.00 to $3.85. Weekend one-way fare $2.00. How much does your Metro cost?

0P2A8335a.JPG

Still in all, it is efficient and affordable, even if a tad overpriced. I guess it is all relative, isn't it? I object to it being so expensive, people can't afford it. While it is a good deal to ride, they should have discounted tickets for those below the poverty line.People are still wearing masks on their own to ride. How about your town?

20200717_071917.jpg

Express bus, Washington, DC to New York City was $19.00 one way. It cost more in tolls and it brings you right into the Port Authority in NYC. Plus, the driver stopped for coffee. On such a short trip, they usually don't.

0P2A8251.JPG

I am appreciative that I have a Metro station close to me. It makes life easier and when it is not working right, pretty annoying. I have to be honest. It works most of the time, so I have no time to be annoyed.

  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess on some
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!

Wow! What a refreshing read, @dswigle!

Maybe that sounds awkward to you to hear me saying that...but really. Don't get me wrong...I love my country, but we also need to face the facts for what they are.

Everything you have shown us here is beautiful, clean, and it's neat and obviously safe to use.

Do I use public transport? A big "no"! Railway stations are mostly filthy, to say the least in my opinion. And I don't feel comfortable or safe on trains either.

We would love to go on a train holiday, but then it is a proper long-distance holiday train (coming with quite a steep price ticket too). But as I say, that's long distance and holiday orientated. Local trains for daily public transport to get from point A to point B...? A definite "no".

Taxis literally have their own wars, often literally shooting at each other, fighting over territory... It's not out of the ordinary to hear about "taxi-wars" here...

Lately, even long-distance busses are getting shot at and some of the long-distance bus companies are calling on the government to intervene. This is also due to taxis becoming aggressive as they claim the buses are competition to them on "their" routes...

What we do make use of, are airline services for traveling over long distances such as visiting family in Johannesburg, which is 600KM from us. Then we start comparing the cost involved. Especially if my wife goes up alone (her mother is not well at the moment), it sometimes works out cheaper for her to fly, due to high gas prices and toll fees. I also prefer that she fly when she goes up alone for safety reasons. When we both go up, it becomes more economical to go by car.

But that's where the buck stops. Locally, I travel by using my own car.

It is so sad. We've had outstanding public transport in the years gone by...but sadly I cannot say that anymore...

You will find my post for this week here.

Have a great weekend!

That is too bad. Honestly. When you have something so good, it is very damaging to the soul to get thrown lower standards to live by. I understand being ashamed of your government. You can't possibly live under a rock and not heard about our government.

Whatever you heard, it is probably true. It happens, but, yours is getting spooky to live with. Crooked governement is harsh, but looting, guns out of control, violence - that kind of crime uncontrolled? Scary. Like a nation out of control.

One time in my life I was frightened by a roadblock in the middle of nowhere in Mexico. They wanted money and I gave them what they wanted. At the time, I had two little kids living on the border. I was scared out of my wits and when I came back later that night, they were in a different place, same road. Long story short, they wanted more money and I wouldn't be able to live there. I wouldn't want to go out.

I would fly too. I don't blame you. Thanks again for dropping the post!
#MarketFriday loves you!

It is sad indeed! And as you say, the government here is getting spooky to live with... That was well said. And the big joke is that they keep warning people not to take the law into their own hands... But if you don't fend for yourself, they surely don't... Yet, that is the biggest joke...when you do fend for yourself, you become the "criminal" by being charged with assault or even worse...depending on the severity of the situation...

Yes, that sounds about the same as it is going here at the moment. The government keeps telling us to report such cases, but just nothing happens...

If I may share something shocking... A female colleague of my wife, a young lady in her mid-twenties was on her way home recently. It was already late in the evening and she was by herself. She got pulled over by a police vehicle after being followed for some time. The "police officer"...(in full uniform), started demanding disgusting favors before he would let her go. Luckily she has a friend who is a police officer too and she managed to phone him. She then handed the phone to the pig who pulled her over. After her friend had a word with him, he backed off and allowed her to go...

It's not just sad when you have to deal with things like this...It's shocking and disgusting...I actually don't have words...

Anyhow, I shouldn't be ranting here about stuff like that while in the comment section of such a positive and uplifting post as yours... Let's rather stay positive!

I want to be horrified by your story, but, sadly I am not. Well, I am horrified, but, I have also heard stories like that from friends I know. (Not here, but, really does it matter?) Everywhere has gotten lawless. If I knew of a place that was relatively safe, I swear I would move there with my family.

Let's stay positive! I truly do most of the time. The only thing I think of is leaving this mess behind for my kids to inherit.

I want to clean it up! Where to start?

Yes, it's exactly as you say...does it really matter where it happens...? The horrifying part is the fact that it happens...irrespective of the "where"...

And if you ever find that place of relative safety...please let me know... I'd also like to go there!

But I agree 100%! Let's stay positive! In general, I am positive by nature...but yes, sometimes things get a bit too much. And I can fully associate with what you are thinking about leaving this mess behind for your kids to inherit...and with us, we now have grandkids too...a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and the youngest only 8 months old. When I see what is happening around us, and the schools (and the world in general) are trying their utter best to teach our kids that it is right and "normal"..."everybody does it"...I just want to lose it...

Anyhow...enough about all the negativity. As you rightfully say, let's stay positive.

That is why I am trying to make a point of finding beautiful places, where you can experience beauty, calmness, healthy fun, and surround yourself with positivity and hope.

My kids already appreciate these places too. I now want to assist them in exposing/teaching our grandkids to also appreciate these things and places, and make them part of their values too!

Thank you so much for providing us with a project such as #MarketFriday that can assist us in doing so and also share it with the rest of the world. I really do appreciate all the effort that you are putting into this project, @dswigle!

That is some outstanding architecture! You got some great shots from it! Very symmetrical!

I am not a fan of public transportation and I would not use it if I could use my own vehicle. Not a fan of most public use stuff and try to avoid it like the plague :)

You may have thought I had forgotten to leave the link. Simply not true as I just was getting around to it 🙂
https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@old-guy-photos/a-time-to-buy-for-christmas

No, never! You would never forget the link!

Thank you, but, I didn't realize they were a little off until I got home and checked them out. Next time they will be better!

Not a fan of public transportation? I bet if you lived in New York City or Paris or even Chicago, you might. It lowers the pollution and keeps the cars off the beltway. So many good reasons. The public has never bothered me, nor public "things." I probably give out more cooties than are given any. ;)

I spent years as a public servant. So, there is that. I am what you deem public stuff. Ugh.

No worries! #MarketFriday still loves you.

Like you, I also have the advantage of having a metro station close to home. The metro is the most civilized means of transport in Bucharest and because you cannot enter without a travel ticket. In the tram or bus, there are many people who do not pay for the trip and are not among the most educated of the city's inhabitants. For this reason I avoid meeting with them.
In Bucharest, a metro ride costs $0.60. I really like your subway station and train station, I think I've seen it in several movies.
I had a hard and ugly week, I didn't have time to write, read and answer. I'll try to post in #marketfriday tonight, late, but I know you won't mind.
I hope, @dswigle, you have a weekend as beautiful as the weather here (30 degrees Celsius).

I'm [retty sure I would avoid meeting them also, There can be homeless people on occasion, but, the police usually remove them from the premises. It is a warm /cool spot and has clean public restrooms. They do scare some of the tourists or make them uncomfortable.

They have to pay before they get onto the train/metro/bus so there are none in the vehicles without paying. The metro is a good price where you live. It used to be much more economical than it is, but, even the train to New York Citys Grand Central station cost $19.00 to get there, yet, if I drive, the tolls are 37.00! So, the train is worth it, even if it seems expensive!

I am sorry about your week, although mine was the same. I have many relatives in the hurricane's path in Florida. We have several of them at the house here and many others are a little displaced at the moment. But, now the weather is headed up to the north here although it will not hit us directly, only wind and rain.

I am hoping next week brings good things/vibes your way! Thank you for thinking of me and if it gets too busy, you know not to try to post! I totally understand@

#MarketFriday loves you!

I'm sorry that your relatives and other Florida residents are in such trouble, I saw on TV that it is extremely serious. Nature shows us her uglier side.
That's what we always do... we hope! Hope!
Thank you so much, Denise! I wrote part of the post this morning, maybe I'll be able to finish it tonight.

That is a great way to do it! I rarely think to do it that way, but perhaps I should. I wait until night as there is nobody up and my time is my own. :)

We hope! Yes! We hope!

None of our train station has such architecture. I missed the one I spent quite a bit of time passing through in Antwerp, Belgium. Some of ours have retail and restaurant options though but nothing with a food court where I can get my free breakfast at:
https://hive.blog/hive-105017/@ace108/marketfriday-claiming-the-free-breakfast-video-or-by-ace108

They have several floors of food, restaurants and a food court where fast foods can be gotten in a hurry, especially if you are catching a connecting ride.

I remember Antwerps! The overhead was glass as you could see into the sky! What an amazing piece of art the entire building was! It was the most gorgeous cathedral/castle-looking place ever! Who could forget it? I still have dreams about it!

Thank you for dropping your link, Ace! @ace108

You're welcome. Antwerp Central Station is an architectural awesome.

Absolutely!!! There is no doubt about that!

What beautiful architecture, @dswigle. I have been there, definitely — back in the old days when I lived out there for about five years out of college. It really is reminiscent of a cathedral, isn’t it?

Thank you as always for hosting Market Friday! I love it so.

Here is my post link: https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@jayna/market-friday-three-restaurants-in-one-week

They renovated it since, I believe and if you can believe it, they want to renovate it again, to the tune of over a billion dollars! Hello? Because that needs to be done instead of stamping out immediate hunger in the US. (I'll be quiet now)

Anyway, it is beautiful and I Love it. It reminds me so much of a cathedral! I love that you appreciate architecture and different cultural experiences!

Thank you fro appreciating @MarketFriday!

That is why #MarketFriday loves you!

The Washington Union Station is such a beautiful place with a breathtaking views and infrastructure interior design, it's seems almost generally, but talking about the transport fare of $19 is a whole lot when converter to our currency.
I wish you all the best.

Here is a link to my post.

https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@vickoly/market-friday-at-a-bracelet-store-to-purchase-a-gift

That fare was for a train fare from Washington, DC to New York City. It is a 4 1/2 hour drive which isn't bad at all and I did it on a regular basis. However, this is the part that is unbelievable. The tolls will cost you $37.00 on the roads, over the bridges etc. So, when I am going on a trip from there and have to pay to park my car also? It makes sense to take the train and a $5.00 taxi. I didn't tell the whole story, so you didn't know. Almost 15,000 Naira. I am always shocked, but, I have an E-Z pass on my car, it tabulated how many tolls and I pay it once a month. Feels cheaper that way, until you get the bill! If you don't pay the bill, they shut your pass off and you must pay each toll as you pass it.

That is a line I don't want to be in!

Thank you for the support and for dropping your link! Hive on!

#MarketFriday loves you!!

That is the most amazing building. I've never forgotten how Grand Central took my breath away.

Oh, and, because ;)

Grand Central is the subway I grew up on! Why don't we build for beauty anymore?

Thanks so much for dropping your link!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Why don't we build for beauty anymore?

I wish I knew! I do think, though, that every era has its beauty. Sometimes, though, I am hard pressed to find it...

The Metro station in Washington DC is always clean!
I love the gold gilding in the interior of the building.
To be honest it's been ages since I took public transportation.
But the first opportunity that comes around, I will not hesitate.

Here is my article, @dswigle ! You know I love #marketfriday!
https://ecency.com/hive-124452/@silversaver888/market-friday-quilts

I think it is always clean and I see it most days. The gold just gives it a nice, classy look. I like public transportation and use it when downtown or around town. It is pretty clean and easy to navigate and great for tourists too.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words and dropping your link. Sorry I have been out of pocket, I am so very behind on everything. But, it will be sunshining tomorrow. :) We hope.

#MarketFriday loves you!

Oh @dswigle ... You bring sunshine wherever you go!
I love #MarketFriday!

Thank you!! We love you too! 😍

very beautiful train station! I agree, such plastic cards for payment are really very convenient. we don’t have the usual subway in our country, but I used the subway in other countries. some metro stations are real works of art. in our country, the price for travel by train or bus is fixed regardless of the time of day. in our city on South, people still wear masks in transport, but in the center there are almost none. we like to travel by train, as cars very often stand in traffic jams for a long time, alas. link to my post:
https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@tali72/biblical-animal-zoo-or-tanakhi

I love train stations in big cities. They are frequently works of art, the architecture is from another era when glamour and beauty were shown in buildings.

How lucky with one rate. Ours is not. That is to discourage people not working to stay off the Metro during commuter times, making less traffic. Plus many companies/government (a lot of government workers here in DC) pay a stipend for travel, so they don't really take anything much out of their pocket for travel. By car isn't too bad at all, I only take the train when necessary as I usually need a car when I get to my destination. Thanks so much for dropping your link!

#marketFriday loves you!

Sorry for the late submitting my post, https://peakd.com/hive-141359/@mrnightmare89/vendors-a-festive-celebration-part-2#@dswigle/re-mrnightmare89-rj1orh.

I think that kind of paying for the bus is awesome. It's like using a card on the train here in the Philippines. Though sometimes it's hard to ride during rush hour because of too many passengers to ride. Sometimes you need to fall in line and the worse part is you can not arrive at your work on time.

I have figured out the rush times and tried to leave before or after them. For the most part, it is crowded, but, not overcrowded. Plus, I have three different modes of transportation: Metro, Bus, and Train. Any of them will make me arrive at my destination.

I appreciate your support and also your dropping the link! I hope you are having a great weekend, Paul! @mrnightmare89

#MarketFriday loves you!

@mrnightmare89 can you tell me what happened to your account? This is not your original account.

Why did you think so? This is my original one, maybe because of the low power?

Now I feel better. BFor some reason, I thought something about it was different. It's not. Sorry about that! Thanks for responding! I realize you have lower power from all that has happened in life. Needs have to be met.

If we ride our own bikes in Vietnam, we will be able to go faster. However, living in the big cities like Melbourne or Sydney, I prefer to use public transportation as it's more convenient and affordable. Same as here, finding a parking spot in the city is very hard.

Some great captures @dswigle 😘, here is my entry for #marketfriday :)

https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@trangbaby/point-cook-town-center

You would only want to bike in Vietnam! I love reading about there and exploring such an incredible country. @dodovietnam did a #MarketFriday on an ancient bookstore last year (or maybe even further back?) but it was the most incredible place and you could go in there and read until your heart's content. You had to go through alleys to get to the entrance... super cool. To this day, I still remember the post.

I have to say, I am always fascinated by different cultures! I want to thank you for your awesome participation and for dropping the link!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Awe you still remember about the book store, yes last year Sweetie. @dodovietnam has been all over the country, what a life, hehe. It sounds an interesting place but pity that I haven't never been to that place. I hope I'll be able to visit it next month when I fly back to Viet Nam :)

You are going home to visit? That is for a good visit, yes? Nobody is sick or anything?

Nobody sick, thanks Sweetie. Just my regular check up every 3-6 months and make sure everything inside my body is good so I have to go back. The medical something in Aus very expensive and I think it's still better to visit my doctor in Viet Nam for now. :)

Hey sis, happy to hear that you will be back next month.

Yeah anh, I fly back for my check up and will stay 2 weeks in Da Nang, let's catch up :)

Wow you still remember about my post about bookstore? That's great, I really appreciate it. @dswigle

I remember most of the posts, but, I will never forget amazing posts. @dodovietnam You write in a memorable way. Truth.

Thank you very much for your words. That's my motivation.

I use the public transport for free in the big cities in Hungary. Outside of the big cities I have a 90% discount on public transport. I always use cash (mostly coins, very rarely paper money) for that. Both of these because I live with multiple disabilities.

Public trasport is free or low cost here also. I think it shoukd be. I didnt mention it, but we do have other things offered up. Taxes on personal property can be $0 or a discounted amount.

I am glad it makes it easier ir at least cheapervto get around! Thanks for stopping by!

You too!!

The metro station looks neat and I am glad that you have it close since you prefer to go out with public transportation in other to avoid the stress to packing your car and all you described hehehe.

This is my link to the market Friday Initiative,

https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@jessicaossom/i-went-to-the-market-but-it-took-me-to-an-unknown-place

Actually, it helps the environment if I take public transportation and keep one more car off the road, the emissions, etc. Pollution... so many reasons. Until I lived here, the only place I used it regular is New York City.

Thanks for dropping your link! :)

Oh, I understand now and it is very thoughtful of you.

This is one beautiful and breathtaking Metro station. The design is just so classy!

Here is my take on #marketfriday this week!

https://ecency.com/hive-147010/@happycrazycon/market-friday-window-shopping-at-hooga

It was built in 1909 and back then, I believe all the architecture was pretty classy. What happened to the way we do things? Once upon a time, we built with grandeur and beauty in mind.

Anyway! Thank you for stopping and commenting and dropping your link!

Thank you! I love old architecture!! Thanks you for dropping your link @maestroali !

Very cool post, Mrs @dswigle.

It is one of the best transportation systems for all citizens. This connected system with all its very adequate facilities is the dream of the transportation system in all cities. But not all cities can make it happen. Hopefully, it will be an example for stakeholders to follow something like this.

very useful posts like this.

That is true. The infrastructure has to be built around the city for it to work. Most old cities have subways/trains from centuries ago. We are very fortunate, being a newer country that the subways were built and the cities grew around them.

I like that many of the cities are connected, especially given how large the country is.

Thanks for stopping by and always giving a quality comment.

Lovely station but most DC metro stations are disgusting.
In Moscow every subway station is a museum / art gallery.

Moscow has incredible architecture, in most public buildings and buildings in general. Many of the stations are not as nice as Union Station, but, many have also been renovated lately.

Thank you for stopping by!

I didn't know there were stations that could look so imposing. They are usually unsightly, but this one is beautiful.

Thank you! Many in the bigger cities are gorgeous! In Europe too and in Russia... The big stations were hubs of transportation and nicely built. I do love this one and I thank you for noticing!

I am so glad you came again!

Goodness gracious! That building's interior and exterior is awesome. The architect actually did a great job designing such piece.

do you try to take advantage of public transportation

To begin with I don't even own a car but even if I do, it's cool to use a public transportation once in a while. I enjoy the ride sometimes and sometimes I just want to command the kind of money enough to get a car into my hands so I could get one and avoid the public transportation. Haha! I've also never been on a train but it's on my bucket list and I will someday.

Union Station was actually built in 1909 so that has a lot to do with the architecture. I do love old buildings- they are built with so much more style! There are many people who don't have a car, but, yes, They do make life easier here in a country that has many miles between cities.

I think you will like a train. It is slower than a car if it has to make a lot of stops, but, you can relax and enjoy it.

And it's still standing strong and really beautiful. I'm impressed.

Relaxing is everything! Like I see in the movies, it'd definitely be a fun ride.

It definitely is!! I went cross country right before covid!

Hi Denise. That station sure looks amazing. Perhaps the cost of the ticket is to justify its beauty :p. Only now has the measure of wearing a mask been lifted on trains and buses, but not everyone has taken it off yet. I guess we're still a little scared and it's better to prevent.

Here my post today. I hope you have a good day. Cheers ❣️!

I think that the mask is now up to everyone to wear or not wear. Some wear it here, many do not. That seems fair. If the numbers get up again, I expect them to put a law on it again.

I hope my dear mother will stay healthy and comfortable even though she doesn't use her own car, happy to listen to mom being okay with umun trains and taxis

I dont use my own car when it is faster to use a train, Metro or bus. Usually a Metro or light rail. I feel good about saving a little pollution. :) Thank you for dropping the link.

It's nice to see mom back there okay?

Good Morning , i go by car for now not stable enough yet to use public transportation . enjoy your weekend

Car works! Most places will need cars to get around, and we are fortunate to live where we don't need one, but everyone has one anyway. :)

Bought some seeds to start my gardening journey. My total bill was around $3 for two eggplants and one cherry tomato. I do hope that I can successfully grow these veggies!

Wow, the pictures are fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. These are the good fortunes for you people who have sign boards all over the place, but we are having some difficulties over here. There are no such rules, and there are no beautiful places or pictures. But I did my best to capture the best of them.

Thanks so much for your concern about the flooding. Some trains have to be diverted as flooding damaged the track!

My friends and cousins have expressed their concern about the news of looming war. They were surprised that what I had warned them seemed to become reality. I have been warning people about big war during the last three years. My close friend decided to build safe houses last year; she knew I was quite psychic.

People should be prepared for the unexpected and bad situations in the near future.

Take care.

Lovely architecture and structures. I would probably just spend some time taking photos of those.

The only mode of public transpo here is by jeep, taxi and recently mini buses. I have had experience with trains in some places and I have enjoyed those. There was only one time where I did experience being one where it is cramped and it was suffocating lol! I was panicking that time and getting anxious but by the next stop it was free again.

Here is my entry for this week

https://ecency.com/hive-196308/@leeart/lunch-and-coffee-with-a

Oh! That is no fun at all!! I find that Asian trains are far more crowded as there are more people. I have been on a full train, but, they cannot overfill them. I would get panicky with an exceedingly cramped space, so I don't blame you.

I like to take photos too except I live close to it and it is just part of the landscape. :) Not really, it is a beauty, but, I don't take as many pics as I should!

Hi @leeart !! I hope you had a great weekend! Thank you for dropping your link!

Nice clean place dear @dswigle, many thanks for your reminder, here is my post link:

https://peakd.com/hive-148441/@almi/mixture-between-market-fair-and-folk

The Union Station looks elegant and quiet. The stations I knew have crazy traffic, foot or vehicles alike. I would pass the architecture to be a museum and wouldn't recorgnize it as a station if you did not mention.

Public transport? Yes. The incoveniences sound troubling but I'd rather that than getting trapped for hours and hours in a traffic jam in my car and I cannot leave it in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, traggic condition in our place is worsening. I just keep hoping that someday, one of our legislators will come up with a law for stricter control of vehicles.

Anyway, here's my #marketfriday this week.

Enjoy the rest of the week!
