The Chincoteague ponies can be seen wandering the beaches, forests of pine, or the salt marshes on Assateague Island. Assateague Island is 37 miles long and has three different agencies that own/operate it: the National Park Service (NPS), Maryland State Parks, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The ponies live in two herds, separated by fence and State, 150 on the Virginia side and 80 on the Maryland side. On the Maryland side, roaming freely is encouraged, while the Virginia side fences off areas to discourage wandering where people are.
The best time to come down to the islands to see them is between late April thru mid-October, although for me, I like it best in May/June as I get the best views of Spring-born foals wandering the salt marshes with their moms. The Virginia side has the unspoiled beaches and the lighthouse, and a US Fish and Wildlife refuge, plus about 70 new ponies on that end of the island each summer. Not a hard choice for me.

It has been rainy and foggy out there this week, but, this is real life so the pictures kind of reflect that look. The last thing you want to do is drag a bunch of equipment hiking through the marsh. We camped out at Tom's Cove right on the waterfront. They have fishing peirs, crabbing piers... everything you need. You haven't lived until you have had crabs over the campfire. The cost is always more on pony week, $71.88 a night, water and electric on the water. I know, we are a little spoiled, but, I need my coffee in the morning and while you may not call that camping, I slept in a hammock. Close enough, yes? But, why on the water? I could just wait and hope for some rain! :)

It is interesting to see the different colors and markings of the Chincoteague Ponies. I find it fascinating to watch every spring, the colors of the foals. There is a book out that I am ready to purchase called The Colorful Chincoteague, by Amanda Geci. It documented and researches the colors found in the Chincoteague Pony. The colors and patterns that are known to exist or have existed are documented as they have never been before. The author is also working on documenting the many instances of other breeds being crossed into the Chincoteague Pony breed population throughout its history.

Rain or shine, everyone is ready for the Pony Penning week. There was no lack of people, although covid is spiking on that side of the bridge. There was a distinct party feeling in the air. How can it not? It's showtime for the ponies!
There are all sorts of fun to be had. Crabbing... fishing, you name it! After the ponies did their walk on the beach the other morning, it was business as usual. A mans gotta eat, yes?
You may get tired of ponies by the time I get back home, but, there will probably be a few for the next few days. Bear with me as I find some decent internet to post, I haven't had time to wait my turn at the cafes here, but, I should be returning to regular posting soonish. Well I would leave the pretty ponies all to you and instead grab my metal detector and spend the days walking/wading that beach. Ponies and horses are fine and all, but in my mind, pale when there is a choice of gold and booty to be found. I can almost smell the gold of some lost wedding rings perhaps even with diamonds. 😲
So are you saying the 72 bucks a night covers the crab on the campfire too??? Oh I am so packing my bags and fueling up the truck!

Nooooo! it was hung between two trees! :) We did have fun all week and even though it was pretty hot, it is the end of July and to be expected. The beach is always lively and I am just happy to get wet and cool off.

I cant say it's a bad thing. It's definitely been less stress with so much goung on.
Watching ponies would make me more than happy staying rain or shine. Crabs or lobster on an open fire for dinner, well that would be a dream come true!

The open fire and the day's catch are amazing. We do that when we come to the shore, crabbing is big here. Lots of the sweet blue crabs. Life is simple here, one of the reasons I like coming out.
One of our horses came from the pack. He is horse size, so they have both ponies and horses here. Anyway, thank you so much for the Luv, the support, and for always leaving me with such great comments. xo

I meant that there is no wifi at the campsite, so I have to find a cafe or some type of shop to do any Hive. :)
It does get me off the street though. :)
As warm as this time of the year is, I am not suffering by taking some time off from the heat (and the sun!)
I always think about the horses passing and being related. I actually know who his mother (and father) are, even though they are wild, their herds are small enough to keep track of those things and there is only one stallion per herd. :)
Seeing the horses in the wild adds to the reason to keep going back.
Staying out of the heat a good reason to keep in contact, hidden away in a small cafe sipping a juice sounds good.

It feels good to see the horses roaming. I roamed a little myself to get some light bites from I place I had not try before. Thing is their has the name of a country that does not exist anymore. Strangely, I read something about the people who started it is a pilot from Macedonia which is what part of Yugoslavia before.

Flashbacks to childhood and reading a book early school called "Misty of Chincoteague". All I remember is horses and swimming, and maybe someone got sunburned (or that could be made up). Looks like a cool place, and of course who doesn't like ponies?

Just something about that name Chincoteague that is so unique. I guess it stuck with me for what 50 years? Wow.
I know, right? I love the Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. It is said to be an Indian name meaning “beautiful land across the water”. The pronunciation and spelling have changed over time. Court records in 1671 indicate a spelling of “Jungoteague”. A reference from the early 1800s indicates a spelling of “Gingoteag”.
'Four things greater than all things are: Women and Horses, Power and War". My fave Redyard Kipling carved those immortal words in stone a hundred years ago. ❤️

I say that it is raging, but, that is because there was literally none and the new strain is being tracked. People stopped being tested, even with Covid, so the numbers are always skewed. (to me)
It is fine and we are still clear from it, we wear a mask when we feel the need and when we are required, so less of a risk.

I hope we have a place like that where the horses can roam freely as well. All the horses here are owned and they are used as horses for hire.
That's nice that there are lots of activities to be done there like crabbing and fishing. I haven't tried fishing but I did try some crabbing, just trying to find some though and that's about it.

I love that we have quite a few different places where the horses run wild and free. I own several horses, but, they have a good life - at least I would like to think that.

When we go to rivers around here, there were only few crabs that we can find, sometimes none at all.
We have lots of nicely sized crabs that are delicious. Also, scallops, clams, oysters, fish, and every other kind of seafood almost! You can catch most of your own easily.
We have the sea, the river has different food. :)
Now that is what I want to experience too where you can easily catch those seafood.

Fishing at the beach with a large crowd of people? This is something unprecedented for me.
If there is a beach and water, it will happen here. :) They were surf fishing, catching fish the swim in the surf.

They are wild! They are referred to as the Chincoteague Ponies as they live on the island.
They are always fun to go see, especially when they have a little one following. :)

Something like this? I have not tried this so far, but this is probably actually one of the best ways for camping. Maybe a little bit scary for those, who cannot swim. For example me. I tried to learn to swim as a young child. We had swimming lessons in the elementary school in a pool with teachers, but somehow I could not learn it, and I have not tried to learn it since then, so currently I cannot swim. Who knows. Maybe I would be able to learn it now as an adult.
Oh, yes! Perfect! :) The rhythmic sound of the ocean puts me to sleep.
One of my daughters sinks like a rock. She can swim when she really thinks hard about what she is doing, but, without effort, she sinks. She goes to swimming lessons every couple of years. So, I believe you. I don't think it is easier as an adult, but, you probably put forth more effort. I would try it.
I never thought about it. All the kids in my family were water rats. They put us in the water and we started swimming.
