Basseterre, St. Kitts, West Indies: Brimstone Hill Fortress is a very well preserved fortress that has a commanding view of the entire island of St. Kitts. It was built by African slave labor to the very specific standards of the British military to protect the coastline from any attack by sea. the coastline from a sea attack and to provide a safe refuge for the is. The struggle was real. St. Kitts was the first West Indian Island to be colonized by Europeans, both the French and British. There were continuous battles between them as they struggled for dominance, partly for control of the sugar plantations. In 1690, the British installed a canon to drive out the French. Soon, they got more.
Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.
I love history and different cultures, so this was just perfect. There is free parking that comes with your $15.00 entry fee. Two years before, it was $10.00. That is a pretty big hike and I expect we will see even more price increases. The parking lot is at the bottom of a hill and to get to the main fort, you have to climb up a fairly steep (read 800 feet up) hill. I will say that some people were meeting a personal challenge that day. Brimstone Hill Fort was started in 1690 and took about 100 years to build this fort, using slave labor from Africa. There is a film that goes over the entire history of the fort, running all day. I have been here before, so I wandered around, trying to imagine what it would have been like to live at the fort, being in the compound, having a store right there and all the essential items.Far and away from everything I knew and loved, thrust upon a small island. The views were spectacular and there were many ruins around the fort that we wandered through. One can never get enough.
I have to be honest. I am sure these kind of stairs are great when there are crowds, but, walking up them is awkward! The spacing is so very wrong, for an individual, but, as I said, for crowds, it makes sense to have a larger footprint for a step, so it is more comfortable to stand in a line on a hill. Plus, can you imagine how taxing that would be to climb them?
The fort and property are defined by the boundaries at the base of the hill. It was hard to focus on all of the minor details when these clouds were hanging down on top of the mountains, just begging me to include them in the photos. They are pretty hard to ignore, but, I don't wasn't to miss the small little details swirling around in my head. This is such a great example of European military engineering that dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. UNESCO uses the term military engineering in a Caribbean context.
This is the Citadel, home to the Fort George Museum. You can access the Citadel by climbing a small ramp up from the visitors center, you can also see more cannons facing the sea as well as the mountains. It looks serious!!
Areas that can be toured on Brimstone Hill include the imposing Fort George Citadel (which includes the Fort George Museum), the Western Place of Arms and the Eastern Place of Arms, all accessed via a steep walk up from the main parking area via a set of ramps and steps. Other areas include the Magazine Bastion, whose walls were breached by the French in 1782, ruins of the Royal Engineers' Quarters, ruins of the Artillery Officers' Quarters, Infantry Officers' Quarters, and the Orillon Bastion. The ruins of the barracks are a short walk from the car parking area.source
The soldiers' living quarters at the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park.
The is the bakehouse for the fort. This bakehouse produced the bread that was part of each soldier's daily ration allowance. The bread was made from imported flour, then was baked in the wood-fired ovens to the left of the divided wall.
In the morning, each soldier was served breakfast, and dinner was provided at mid-day. This is a list of rations for the typical British soldier in the early 1800s:
1lb of flour (this was made into bread)
1 lb fresh beef or 9 oz. of pork
7 oz of butter
3/7 pint of pease (These were peas!)
1 1/7 oz of rice
The fort is the earliest surviving example of the “Polygonal System” of fortress design. Unlike previous forts. polygonal forts had no bastions, which had proved to be vulnerable. This was considered unpenetrable, until the French did exactly that.
Caribbean culture, like its African roots, showed reverence to its elderly. It has been changing over the last while, with the influence of technology and mobility, fewer people are live by this standard anymore. It is a shame to me. Do you instill these values in young people you know or are related to? Life has gotten rough, sort of like these jagged rocks. A view from the top.
The peaceful allure of Brimstone. It is hard to believe that the building commenced in 1690 and carried on for 100 years until it was completed.
I know you won't forget to ring the Tower Bell !! It can be found near the flagpole with the St. Kitts & Nevis flag! It is thought that the bell was used to alert you to day-to-day activities like changing of guards and meal times. That makes perfect sense to me.
The principal structures which are situated on different levels of the upper third of the hill were constructed in dressed stone blocks with a rubble core, and they are also decorated with local limestone which is used as a decoration for quoins and for facing round doorways and embrasures. souirce
Stone walls of volcanic rock were fashioned and laid by African slaves using limestone from the slopes as a mortar. This was for the Brimstone Hill Fortress designed by British engineers to protect their interest against the French who despite having signed a Treaty of Partition in 1627 dividing St Kitts, mounted guns against the British in July 1689 capturing not just Fort Charles which had been designated neutral territory but the entire island. Then after reinforcement troops arrived from Britain and St Kitts was once again regained from the French, construction of the fortress with 800ft walls started in 1690 and took over 100 years to complete. Brimstone Hill Fortress is now a national park, and one of the top tourist attraction on St Kitts. source

Such a humiliating part of history. I wasn't brought up that way, so I just don't understand it.
That is pretty interesting that it took 100 years to complete the fort. Especially given the fact that they weren't doing any of the work themselves. I would have expected them to move things along a big quicker. Awesome shots. This looks like a really beautiful place. I've never been anywhere tropical besides Florida. I hope to get a chance some day.
I didn't answer your other inquiry. The construction of the Brimstone Hill Fortress began in 1690 and it continued intermittently for just over 100 years until completion.
I had thought it was continuous, but apparently not. It was hard to find anything other than it was 100 years in the making. But, I didn't look too hard after I saw that a dozen times. :)
Maybe they had to stop in between attacks and battles...
You know what? I never even thought about that, but it makes a lot of sense!
Once you do tropical, Florida won't do it for you. The people are so incredibly nice, do everything to make your visit nice, the food is pretty incredible with exotic tastes, amazing rainforests, the mountains that you get up to touch the clouds.
Just do it, Jay! When the time is right, of course. You will never regret it!

Ahhh, heat and cannons. Looks like a great trip. Haven't seen the grass here in 2 months! Have enjoyed the snow, but ready for spring. Another month or two I guess.
I feel for you, I honestly do. I love snow, but, it needs to go away after mid-January. I see my grass all winter usually, but, we do get an occasional spot of white.

Agree, I enjoy the snow too, but ready for it to be done now. A month shorter season would be just fine. Cannons are always on my fav list! The snow equipment has done ok, but I'm thinking will invest in the larger ATV size snow blower next year. Couldn't find one in time for this year so used the plow, but on those big dumps or multiple snows in a week, we start running out of places to push it to. The larger blower would spread it much farther into the yard/woods without having the 6ft piles all over.
The yard will take forever to melt. I went to school in New Hapshire for a year. We went swinningi the reservoir with the snow piles all around us. Lol
Now that would take some getting used to. Swimming and snowball fights hahaha.
We were teenagers! It was hot, so it was probably in the 70s! Lol
Today it will be 70 and I might wear shorts if I run. Ha!

How well that green mountain combines with the blue of the sky and the sea. This is one of the best"legacies" battles of conquest left us: the fortresses they built. They are really impressive in terms of their imposing structure and their always perfect location (of course). I assume that the size of those footsteps was conditioned by the type of transportation means and military equipment tools they used at that time. Excellent post as usual !

All over the world, the fortresses are amazing structures! The Asian ones are probably some of the most amazing to me, always on the top of a peak that seems impossible to get to! They are always impressive, those imposing structures!

Once again the French and the English have not been friends, although they are as close as neighbors can be. The fortress is impressive, I feel it very heavy when I look at the stone from which it was built. Unfortunately, any such construction sends one thinking of hard fighting and much suffering. Otherwise, the view of the sea is wonderful. Thank you, Denise, for taking us on a walk and history!

It wouldn't be anything for you either as you are a walker. The only ones that had a problem were very sedentary, but, they were pretty tenacious and I didn't see anyone left behind. There were no big lines, so I could see clearly who was and wasn't making progress.
The fort was pretty cool and I actually hope to go back another time. Three times is never enough!

Just wow, the place was so beautiful and I could from the overlooking view towards the sea. I was amazed at how it was even though you said the stairs were very wrong. It was obviously built a long time ago, I was amazed at how it was preserved until now. Also, even in the baking you're well informed.

This is so fantastic! I love old stone forts. Just love them. There are a few in the nearby old "Harbour defence system" that I like to visit, just cause they're awesome. I need to find some more that aren't too far away for day trips.
I do like how those steps are built; it must have made going up them easier alone a gradient than multiple steps.
I could say I don't know of these Forts over there that you speak of! Now, of course oh, I am going to have to look them up because any Fort is worth a look-see!! Thanks for that! I love Forts too. They are so cool. Old San Juan, Puerto Rico has a pretty amazing one too... a lot of the islands do.

Oh, this fortress is absolutely stunning! The mountain view and the sea view are both breathtaking, and refreshing.
There is also one fortress back in the Philippines, the Corregidor Island, which I would like to be able to visit someday soon with my kids.
Anyway, my #marketfriday contribution after a very long time is from the Abu Dhabi Fish Market when we went there to buy some fresh seafood for Christmas Eve.

How hard it must have been for the African slaves to build this amazingly big complex come fort over a span of 100 years. Not only were they taken from their country worked and so badly treated.
The Caribbean is such a wonderful tourist destination and one that we are yet to visit in the future now that covid is slowly going away, at least I hope this is the case.

It is a huge tourist destination, mostly because of the weather, and then, you realize the rich history they have, at the same time, very bloody history with fights for control. Again... the control. :(

I am very interested in history. It is a very beautiful historical place and you have photographed it very well. Each country has a different history and is identified by its history.

This is interesting and historical @dswigle I saw some of this cannon guns at a museum in lagos state Nigeria 🇳🇬 (badagry) I saw several cannons there that's were used during the slave trade, this is historical nice pictures
There are certainly a lot of cannons around. All the battlefields here have them, some cemeteries and especially the museums. I wonder if they knew these would still be around four hundred years later?

I've been to Basseterre, St. Kitts before as a stop on a carribean cruise we took but I didn't know that there was a fort there. It looks really cool in your photos and the history sounds interesting. I agree that those types of stairs are really awkward to walk on. I never really thought of the reasoning behind them but what you said about accommodating crowds makes a lot of sense. Interesting.
Of course, I am only guessing on the stairs. I could see everyone crowding together and one granny slipping and falling. The rest would fall like dominoes. This gives more space and keeps the feet level for longer periods of time. Small steps and awkward as heck when you are just a twosome or threesome.
The first time I went there was island hopping and you could see it from the air. I went by ship to it also on one of the popular St. Kitts/St. Thomas/etc. etc... I actually loved cruising when it was a relaxing kind of thing, after living in Europe and doing the Continent there... but, I have to admit, my favorite is 30 days here and 30 days there. I am thinking that is a life for the rich and famous, but, someday. :)
St. Kitts has a pretty cool rainforest also. The country surprised me as I didn't know it was so poor, but, things were improving with money being invested in their people (precovid) We will see how it fared.
