Market Friday: Getting my Real ID in a cute historic town

in Market Friday3 years ago (edited)

Has anyone tried getting a “Real ID”? I believe it’s just a U.S. thing. Soon we will all need them in order to travel domestically by plane. And in fact I think everyone is required to get one by October.

Here’s the catch. You need approximately 8 pieces of identification, including a pay stub, a bank statement, your social security card and your passport, plus an affidavit from God.

Here’s the other catch. There are no appointments. Anywhere. Ever.

Okay, rant over. The point of all that is that I didn’t think I had a shadow’s chance of succeeding, but I found a license renewal place that would accept walk-ins if they are not really busy. So I went there and I actually GOT IT!! Woo hoo! This is important because my license expired at the end of March.

So that’s the business side of my Market Friday post. The location of the license renewal is a tiny historic town called Chaska, where my family lived when I was very young. It’s an adorable little town that seems not to have aged in more than half a century since my family called it home.

See what I mean? Even the Wells Fargo building seems to harken back to its stage coach days.

I liked the statue outside the American Legion building.

And how cute is this mini silo?

I took a walk through the tiny city park, which has a charming gazebo in the center.

The town has made at least one addition in recent years - a drive-through Dunkin Donuts! So I got a donut each for my husband and me before heading out of town. It made my day!

Wait what affidavit from God? What is it? 🤔

That was a joke! Don't worry. 😁

😂 okay. I'm not American so even if it's not a joke, I wouldn't need it.

Lovely pics. What a charming Midwestern town. I guess I need to look into this Real ID thing. I might need some time to come up with 8 pieces of ID!

Yes, that is my recommendation, @cliffagreen. Start early. The pieces of ID depend on exactly what Real ID you want. For example, if you want the enhanced Real ID, you need an extra form of picture ID. And regardless, you need something official that has your social security number on it. Good luck!

Reminds me of the historic town we met in :) I am at Mike's right now and have been thinking about our Colorado trip a lot. So much fun!

It was! Yes, Cripple Creek, wasn't it? Charming place, and it seemed to be thriving with all the casinos. I wonder how they fared through the pandemic.

I don't think Colorado ever totally shut down - but most tourist places suffered, I am sure.

There's nothing like the Wild West mentality, @mariannewest! 🤣
