On Friday, last week, when I left my routine practices at the Manual Fajardo hospital, (as I had told you in previous articles, I am a medical imaging and radiophysics student), in the company of my partner; I made the decision to spend that afternoon in the municipality of Vedado. Our goal: the craft fair that is located next to what was once one of the most important ice cream parlors in Havana, the famous "Coppelia" ice cream parlor, located right in the heart of Vedado.

el viernes, de la semana pasada, al salir de mis rutinarias prácticas en el hospital Manual Fajardo, (como les había comentado en artículos anteriores, soy estudiante de imagenologia y radiofísica médica), en compañía de mi pareja; tomé la decisión de pasar esa tarde en el municipio del Vedado. Nuestro objetivo: la feria artesanal que se encuentra ubicada al lado de la que fue una de las heladerías más relevantes de la Habana, la famosa heladería "Coppelia", ubicada justamente en el corazón del Vedado.
Before arriving at our destination, we wanted a good cup of coffee, mainly to recover our strength from the hectic morning we had in the hospital. So by chance, and without any planning, we met at the door of the "Cubalibro" literary cafe.
Antes de arribar hacia nuestro destino, se nos antojaba un buen café, principalmente, para recuperar las fuerzas de la agitada mañana que tuvimos en el hospital. Así que de forma casual, y sin planificación alguna, nos encontramos en la puerta del café-literario "Cubalibro".
A kind of space that attracts young people from the capital, precisely because of its bohemian and vintage style. However, it wasn't just its appearance that seduced us... It also has a whole bookstore. You arrive to have a coffee, and end up attracted by a pile of books. As in effect, we ended up buying several copies. Such as: The little prince, several titles by Gabriel García Márquez, and the one that fascinated me the most and that I had been looking for for a long time "1984".
Una suerte de espacio que atrae a los jóvenes de la capital, precisamente por su estilo bohemio y vintage. Sin embargo, no fue solo su aspecto lo que nos logró seducir...Sino que cuenta con toda una librería. Llegas a tomarte un café, y terminas atraído por un montón de libros. Como en efecto, terminamos por comprar varios ejemplares. Tales como: El principito, varios títulos de Gabriel García Márquez, y el que más me fascinó y que llevaba tiempo buscando "1984".
Fascinated by the delicious coffee, the seductive atmosphere of the afternoon and most importantly, my new acquisition of books; We continue on our walk. Not if you first make a stop at a curious and artistic mural, found on any street in Vedado, right at the entrance to countless little houses built clandestinely and with a scruffy appearance. Making the realization and contrast of the mural even more curious, in this area of the Havana municipality.
Fascinada con el delicioso café, el ambiente seductor de la tarde y lo más importante, mi nueva adquisición de libros; proseguimos en nuestra caminata. No si antes realizar una parada en un curioso y artístico mural, encontrado en una calle cualquiera del Vedado, justo en la entrada de un sinnúmero de casitas construidas de forma clandestina y con aspecto desaliñado. Haciendo aún más curioso la realización y el contraste del mural, en esta zona del municipio habanero.
Until finally! We arrived at the crowded fair. From the main entrance you could see the hustle and bustle of the place. Crowded with both Havanans and tourists, we entered its interior, without thinking twice.
¡Hasta que por fin! Llegamos a la abarrotada feria. Desde la entrada principal se notaba el bullicio y la algarabía del lugar. Atestado tanto de habaneros, como de turistas, nos adentramos en su interior, sin pensarlo dos veces.
In each of the stalls, handicrafts stood out. Being able to find clothes of all kinds, made of beautiful fabrics with thread, jewelry, home decorations... and mainly handicrafts that show what is most deeply rooted in our culture. Like the curious statuettes of black women with extravagant scarves, bags and stamps with the controversial figure of Ernesto Guevara (Che), allegories to the most popular sport in Cuba: baseball, guayaberas (shirts representative of Cuban clothing), among others. ...
En cada uno de los puestos, resaltaban los artículos artesanales. Pudiendo encontrar ropas de todo tipo, hechas de hermosos tejidos con hilo, bisutería, adornos para el hogar...y principalmente artesanías que muestran lo más arraigado de nuestra cultura. Como las curiosas estatuillas de mujeres negras con extravagantes pañuelos, bolsos y estampillas con la controvertida figura de Ernesto Guevara (el Che), alegorías al deporte más gustado en Cuba: el béisbol, guayaberas (camisas representativas de la vestimenta de Cuba), entre otros...
Among so many things, I had a hard time deciding what to buy. So in the end I ended up taking home this curious necklace that I show you in the photo. What fascinated me the most about the article in question is that you can see at a glance that it was made entirely by hand.
Entre tantas cosas, me costaba decidir que comprarme. Asi que al final terminé por llevar a casa este curioso collar que les muestro en la foto. Lo que más me fascinó del artículo en cuestión, es que se puede advertir a simple vista que fue hecho completamente a mano.
But what most jumped out at me and my partner, was the section of the paintings. Seeing reflected in each of them countless stories and cultures. Made by their live artists, all accompanied by their canvas and brush, they only stopped capturing their art, to sell one or another of their works.
Pero lo que más saltó a mi vista y a la de mi pareja, fue la sección de los cuadros. Viendo reflejados en cada uno de ellos un sinnúmero de historias y culturas. Realizados por sus artistas en vivo, todos acompañados de su lienzo y pincel, solo cesaban de plasmar su arte, para vender una que otra de sus obras.
Concluding my visit to the fair, there was still one activity to do before leaving. I tell you that in Vedado, garages with second-hand clothes can be seen frequently in various areas. These are carried out under the initiative of young students who participate in the project (CEDA) which by its acronym means: Cubans in Defense of Animals. Which consists of a humanitarian project, which aims to: protect animals in our province, and pay for medicines, food and shelters for animals that do not have a home. Project created precisely by these young students.
Concluyendo mi visita a la feria, quedaba aún una actividad por realizar antes de partir. Les comento, que en el Vedado, se pueden observar frecuentemente en varias zonas, garajes con ropa de segunda mano. Estos son realizados bajo la iniciativa de jóvenes estudiantes que participan en el proyecto (CEDA) que por sus siglas significa: Cubanos en Defensa de los Animales. El cual consiste en un proyecto humanitario, que tiene como objetivo: proteger a los animales en nuestra provincia, y costear los medicamentos, comida y casas de acogida para los animalitos que no cuentan con un hogar. Proyecto creado, precisamente por estos jóvenes estudiantes.
I am passionate about these "garage sales", because in them I can find clothes in very good condition and even new, at a fairly reasonable price, in addition to the satisfaction of knowing that with each garment I wear, I am contributing my grain of sand, to these little animals, which unfortunately still do not have a home. For my part, I took this time, two beautiful blouses. Concluding in this way, my purchases on Friday. And going home grateful for such an amazing day.
Me apasionan dichas "ventas de garaje", porque en ellas puedo encontrar ropa en muy buen estado y hasta nueva, en un precio bastante módico, además de la satisfacción de saber que con cada prenda que llevo, estoy aportando mi granito de arena, para estos animalitos, que lamentablemente aún no cuentan con un hogar. Yo por mi parte, llevé esta vez, dos hermosas blusas. Concluyendo de esta forma, mis compras de viernes. Y yendo a casa agradecida por tan fascinante día.

Por eso me gusta La Habana, lo tiene todo o casi todo para deleitar al que se aventura en pasear por su paisaje urbanístico. Siempre que voy me lo disfruto mucho. Interesante tu relato, me pareció estar degustando ese café literario. Me ha encantado tu paseo. Como dices, es bastante pintoresco el contraste que se obtiene del lugar. Y empezar el recorrido con un buen café y la compra de varios libros es genial. Mi suegro es cubano y me hiciste recordar lo cargado que servía el café en su casa jejeje
Las artesanías y las pinturas lucen preciosas. Se nota el trabajo detrás de ellas. Y las ventas de garage son una joya donde puedes encontrar cosas muy peculiares y buenas. Un fuerte abrazo y buen artículo.
