Market Friday at Northgate

We have had a craving for authentic Mexican tacos made of carnitas, (crispy pork pieces), and while our go-to places for tacos are usually the now ubiquitous taco trucks in our area, today we opted to just go get the meat and prepare our own homemade tacos from our favorite Mexican store – the Northgate Gonzales Market.

Northgate Market is a family-owned and managed grocery store that started as a liquor store and got bigger into a grocery store. From one store it has grown to around 41, located in various cities of Southern California, Texas, and Arizona. It provides authentic Mexican meals, recipes, and other items.Source

It is one of the most popular Hispanic stores which sells authentic products and ingredients to make traditional Latino dishes from tortillas and various spices. Northgate makes its own tortilla – the thin, flat cornmeal bread which is the wrap used for the tacos.

Piloncillo or cane sugar is the sweetener used by Mexicans and Latin Americans. It is said to be healthier than sugar

Northgate also has a section for cooked meals, among them the carnitas! Here it is!

To pair with the carnitas, Northgate also makes a variety of salsas made from fresh ingredients.

The store also has a big produce section that offers a variety of fruits in season such as watermelons, nectarines, avocados and dragon fruits among others.

We took home some fruits and also some Mexican bread for breakfast or for munching at night while binging on Netflix or HBO.

There also is a thirst quenchers corner. Take your pick from the freshly prepared fruit juices. They have mango, horchata, and strawberry.

Look what we have in our shopping cart at check-out – a hodgepodge of fruits and vegetables. And we thought we were just gonna take home the carnitas.

Notice the grocery bag in the cart? We have been using reusable bags here in California. Well most of us at least. ..instead of single-use plastic bags, to reduce plastics going to landfills. It is a way of protecting the environment.

Actually, it was put on the ballot in 2016 and the measure won, so since then single-use thin plastic bags have been banned statewide in big retail stores, Northgate included.

Nice, a one stop shop where you have everything you need..

A very convenient place for food shopping.

When we toured LA, we went to this fresh market and there were all kinds of chili and dried pepper hanging on a thread..it was awesome to see those chilis in clusters..then, can you imagine me as a tourist buying 2 kilos of fine cornflour to make cornbread. It was not available in Vienna. Then when we came back from the trip, the luggage was full of cornflour because of a hole... Lol.

Oh my I can imagine you shaking off vigorously the cornflour lol

To cook or not, you have the option. Thank you for dropping by.

this post is making me hungry. If it was me I'll grab mostly fruits and vegetables too hahaha and of course I'll try the quenchers! Enjoy the weekend ate!

Specially the dragonfruits, healthy and delicious. Thank you and have a good one too.

Wow! The market is nice, neat and organized. First time to see that Piloncillo and that different spices.

The piloncillo is somewhat similar to our molasses.
