"Carpenter bee" starting to dig a tunnel for a nest - "Abeja carpintera" iniciando la excavación de un túnel para un nido.

On the roof of my house I store lumber and on a dry wood beam there is a "carpenter bees" nest. Occasionally I climb up on the roof to see the nest and check the whole beam. Recently under the wooden beam, I saw the beginnings of an excavation and also, but to one side of the beam, a "carpenter bee" digging. "Carpenter bees" that dig are females.

En el techo de mi casa almaceno madera y en una viga de madera seca hay un nido de "abejas carpinteras". Ocasionalmente subo al techo para ver el nido y reviso toda la viga. Recientemente debajo de la viga de madera, vi el inicio de una excavación y también, pero a un lado de la viga, a una "abeja carpintera" excavando. Las "abejas carpinteras" que excavan son hembras.

I think that same "carpenter bee" started digging under the beam, encountered one of the nest tunnels and chose to abandon that excavation and then start another one on the side of the beam. "Carpenter bees" can initiate tunnel excavation for a nest on the horizontal or vertical surface of a wooden beam. It should be noted that shallow excavations at nest sites can be regarded as an examination of the wood prior to digging, although in this case it resulted as an unsuccessful attempt to start a nest.

Pienso que esa misma "abeja carpintera" empezó a excavar debajo de la viga, se encontró con uno de los túneles del nido y optó por abandonar esa excavación para luego iniciar otra en un lado de la viga. Las "abejas carpinteras" pueden iniciar la excavación del túnel para un nido en la superficie horizontal o vertical de una viga de madera. Cabe destacar que las excavaciones poco profundas en los lugares de nidificación pueden considerarse como un examen de la madera antes de excavar, aunque en este caso resultó como un intento infructuoso de iniciar un nido.

The excavation place made it difficult to take pictures because of the small space between the wooden beams that did not allow me to introduce my hand with the digital camera. Nevertheless, I managed to capture some photographs from another angle.

El sitio donde se encontraba excavando dificultaba la captura de fotografías por el pequeño espacio entre vigas de madera que no permitía introducir mi mano con la cámara digital. No obstante, logré capturar algunas fotografías desde otro ángulo.

When I noticed it was gone, I took the opportunity to separate the wooden beams a little. I could have done it while the bee was working, but when they feel the vibrations of movement, these bees immediately cease the digging activity, although they resume it once the vibration is over.

Cuando noté que se fue, aproveché para separar un poco las vigas de madera. Pude haberlo hecho mientras la abeja trabajaba, pero al sentir vibraciones de movimientos estas abejas interrumpen inmediatamente la actividad de excavación, aunque la reanudan una vez finalizada la vibración.

Everything I described above happened one day in the afternoon hours. The next morning I did not see it digging.

Todo lo que describí anteriormente ocurrió un día en horas de la tarde. El día siguiente en la mañana no la vi excavando.

I searched the literature and read that females have been observed digging tunnels during the day and night, and that digging is a more or less continuous process that may even last all night, several days or be carried out in sessions over several days. I checked at night and the bee did not appeared.

Indagué en la literatura y leí que se han observado hembras cavando túneles durante el día y la noche, y que la excavación es un proceso más o menos continuo que puede incluso durar toda la noche, varios días o llevarse a cabo en sesiones durante varios días. Revisé en la noche y la abeja no apareció.

The third day in the morning hours I chose to photograph what the bee had been digging, which are the two photographs I show below.

El tercer día en horas de la mañana opté por fotografiar lo que la abeja había estado excavando, que son las dos fotografías que muestro a continuación.

The bee returned in the afternoon hours, and since I had separated the wooden beams, this allowed me to capture better photographs.

La abeja regresó en horas de la tarde, y como había separado las vigas de madera, esto me permitió capturar mejores fotografías.

In order to obtain a symmetrically round tunnel, the bee changes it position during the digging process, starting usually with it ventral part down, and later turns so that it faces sideways and finally upwards. The wood shavings are left to accumulate to some degree, and then the bee pushes them towards the entrance using the head or abdomen and legs. This can be seen in the following photographs.

Para obtener un túnel simétricamente redondo, la abeja cambia de posición durante el proceso de excavación, comenzando normalmente con su parte ventral hacia abajo, para después girar de forma que mire hacia los lados y finalmente hacia arriba. Las virutas de madera las deja acumular hasta cierto punto, y luego las empuja hacia la entrada utilizando la cabeza o el abdomen y las patas. Esto se puede apreciar en las siguientes fotografías.

The nest entrance is only slightly wider than the bee, allowing the bees to defend their nest by blocking the entrance with the head or abdomen. For digging, the female uses only its strong mandibles, uses a lot of energy and sometimes its body vibrates while using its mandibles to chew through the wood.

La entrada del nido es solo ligeramente más ancha que la abeja, lo que permite a las abejas defender su nido bloqueando la entrada con la cabeza o el abdomen. Para la excavación, la hembra utiliza únicamente sus fuertes mandíbulas, emplea mucha energía y a veces su cuerpo vibra mientras usa sus mandíbulas para masticar la madera.

Once the construction of a nest is started, the bee usually continues until a particular tunnel is completed, but the bee did not return after several days; something happened to it. I show two photographs where you can see the work done by the bee and in the last one you can see the marks left by its mandibles.

Una vez iniciada la construcción de un nido, la abeja suele continuar hasta completar un determinado túnel, pero la abeja no regresó luego de varios días; algo le ocurrió. Muestro dos fotografías donde se aprecia el trabajo realizado por la abeja y en la última son notables las marcas que dejaron sus mandíbulas.

Finally, although the species in the photographs I think is Xylocopa fimbriata, I show an image of Xylocopa sonorina, to give an idea of the powerful mandibles, because they are very similar.

Finalmente, aunque la especie en las fotografías pienso que es Xylocopa fimbriata, muestro una imagen de Xylocopa sonorina, para dar una idea de las poderosas mandíbulas, porque son muy parecidas.
