The photographs of the plant I show below were captured on the top of a mountain during the dry season and correspond to the species Cochlospermum vitifolium. Cochlospermum vitifolium, popularly known by the common name "panicua" or "yellow rose", is a tree that grows up to 5 meters high and is characterized by its attractive yellow flowers. This plant has been used in several countries for its medicinal properties and is found from Mexico to South America.

A large number of plants are always used empirically in the world for the treatment of different diseases, and then numerous studies are undertaken to provide scientific proof and justify the medicinal use of these plants. The bark of Cochlospermum vitifolium is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hepatitis and other related diseases. I will comment a little on this.

In our body, the renin-angiotensin system is considered the major regulator of blood pressure, electrolyte balance and renal, neuronal and endocrine functions related to cardiovascular control. Angiotensin II is the most important hormone of the renin-angiotensin system, mediating inositol triphosphate production and calcium mobilization and, as a consequence, vasoconstriction and activation of the sympathetic nervous system. These biological actions of angiotensin II are mediated by the AT1 receptor. Angiotensin II receptors not only mediate the normal regulation of blood circulation, but are also involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension and its consequences. It is known that an excess of renin-angiotensin system activity has an adverse prognosis in arterial hypertension. In this regard, angiotensin II AT1 receptor blockers inhibit the interaction of angiotensin II with its AT1 receptor. I comment this information because very few studies have been performed with this plant and in one of them it was demonstrated that the stem bark in methanol:dichloromethane extracts in a 1:1 ratio inhibits the binding of the AT1 receptor of angiotensin II by more than 50 %.

In many Central and South American countries, the aqueous extract of Cochlospermum vitifolium bark, administered orally, is traditionally used to treat liver and kidney ailments. Although the traditional use has not been corroborated, another study found that the ethanolic extract of the plant's bark possesses anti-inflammatory-immunomodulatory properties suggesting that the use of the bark could induce a significant reduction of the concomitant inflammatory processes related to the aforementioned pathologies. The anti-inflammatory activity was based on the inhibition of cyclooxygenase.

Finally, the metabolic syndrome is a complex disease produced by several pathophysiological factors such as obesity due to visceral fat (abdominal obesity), insulin resistance (diabetes and prediabetes), hypertension (high blood pressure) and dyslipidemia (high cholesterol). These are the most dangerous risk factors for heart attack.

The pharmacological properties of different extracts of Cochlospermum vitifolium bark as a potential agent for the treatment of some factors related to metabolic syndrome have been evaluated. Hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts were used in pharmacological assays to determine their vasorelaxant and hypoglycemic activity. The methanol extract was also used to determine its hepatoprotective effect. The results suggested that Cochlospermum vitifolium bark extracts could be used as a potential agent against metabolic syndrome, as they exhibited hypoglycemic, vasorelaxant and hepatoprotective properties.

Hola @popurri, gracias. Que estés bien.
