Orion’s Falling Stars

in StemSocial3 years ago

If you decide to gate at the night sky this week, you have a good chance to see a falling star. And not just one as the Orionid meteor shower is just getting ready to be the strongest.

The Orionid meteor shower is one of the strongest meteoric showers and NASA thinks that in the years 2020 to 2022 it will be even stronger than in the previous years. The reason why this meteor shower is called Orionid is because from the view of a human on Earth they seem to fly out of the constellation Orion.

Meteor showers are created when the orbit of our planet passes through the orbit of another object in space that leaves little bits of itself in its path. Orionids are connected with Halley’s Comet which was last seen back in 1986 and the next time it will show itself will be in 2061.

As Halley’s Comet came closer to the Sun the heat from the Sun caused dust and rocky particles to release. When these particles get in the upper layers of the atmosphere of our planet they burn at the result is a falling star – a meteor.

The ideal conditions to observe Orionids will take place in the second half of the night Tuesday 20th. To maximize the effect you should pick a spot where the is as little light pollution as possible. Thus, ideally outside of large cities.

This year the observations should be made easier as the conditions should be especially favorable. As the shower will reach its maximum the Moon will already set at 20:26 and will not disturb with its light.
