Candida is one of the yeast that is found on many plants and it is also a normal flora of the gastrointestinal trait of mammals and mucocutaneous areas of human beings.
There are many species in candida (eg: C Albicans, C Krusei, C Glabrata, etc).
Here is a picture of the gram stain of candida where gram positive purple coloured budding yeast cells are seen.
They also form germ tubes that are cell elongations.
Candida causes candidiasis and can affect the skin nails or even cause deep - seaked infections. It also causes vaginal infections and oral thrush which is transmitted sexually to male partners and can cause pain and discomfort during sex.
Candida on chrom agar develops different coloured colonies of different species and that's how its distinguished from one another.
It is an infection which can be treated when diagnosed early but incase of AIDS patients and immuno compromised patients its difficult at times because immunity is lowered and the body is immune system cannot fight back the infection.
