BIRDING IN THE NATURAL RESERVE "DEL SADO PT (OC)🧠👨‍🏫

From forests to humid jungles I have gone into investigating birds, and the feathered ones have a very different behavior depending on the species, today I decided to go to a saline to study what types of birds are common here and how their behavior would be! make yourself comfortable that we will navigate between the feathers and bird watching!🤔👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

I recently bought this camera to record while doing my walks, so today I'm going to release it! My intention is to use it under water or when climbing, I have not yet bought all the accessories so I will use it by hand! I also took my EOS camera with 2 lenses, one of 18-55mm and the telephoto lens of 300mm🤔🤔

The estuary is located in Setubal, which is the municipality where I currently live. I had to drive about 25km by car from my home to the estuary! This area is known because it has an extension of more than 20 thousand hectares, its location is in the center of the Atlantic coast and it bears the famous name of Sado because the SADO RIVER ends here! the river has an extension of more than 150 kilometers!🤔😮

The estuary is officially a natural reserve of Portugal, scientists annually carry out a series of works and research in the area due to the ecological interest it represents! It is known because the famous bottlenose dolphin can be seen in it, the object of a series of environmental impact studies by the Faculty of Biology of the University of Lisbon!🤔🤔

Due to the ecological conditions we can find some varieties of birds from terrestrial such as Passer domesticus, a very common bird in Europe and that we can find it in almost all the Portuguese territory, to the beautiful flamingos of which nesting records have already been obtained in the estuary. ! Due to the tides the estuary goes through two phases: a low tide which exposes the muddy areas and another high tide that covers the aquatic plants!🤩🤩

The first impact that you take when you arrive at the park is that you see many ecological structures made with recyclable materials in addition to observing advertisements and bird art throughout the area, promoting ornithological interest! I have many friends who perform bird banding in this area as it is a resting place for migratory species such as storks!🥰😮👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

I went to visit the park at 2:00 p.m. It is not the best time to observe birds since the sun tries to make the birds look for areas to take refuge, the best time to observe birds is at 6:00 since they all move to its foraging and feeding areas, so we can see all kinds of birds in flight, also many already between 6: 00-10: 00 feed and socialize in flocks! Among the most photographed birds in the estuary are the guincho (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), white heron and gray heron (Ardea alba, Ardea cinerea), the black-winged gull (Rissa brevirostris), Colhereiro (Platalea leucorodia), Phalacocorax, (Ciconia ciconia) and many more! let's see if I'm lucky today !!🦆🦩🦚🦉

It was to be expected that my first individuals photographed are (Egretta thula), they are part of the Ardeidae family, they are the famous herons, common from Portugal and seen in hestuaries feeding on small fish and crustaceans! Its feeding method is to look for its prey by making movements with its legs!🤗🤩

To photograph birds we must be very attentive because their flights are fast, and we have to program the camera to take with gusts, because you never know when a heron or seagull will pass in front of you.😏😏

I read that estuary means "marine cradle" since they are used by many fish and mollusks as a breeding point! generally due to the changes of the tides there are no large predators in the area and the birds know it so they can use it for rest and reproduction, this particular estuary has no predators the birds feel safe here!😮🤔

Here I managed to photograph about 800 meters bands of birds of two different species sharing the same space, we have some specimens of Rissa brevirostris and Chroicocephalus ridibundus, generally the herons are quite territorial and do not share their feeding space with other individuals, but the gulls have a different behavior, can socialize with different vocalizations😮😮

Among the birds sighted, Himantopus himantopus is also included in the Recurvirostridae family and very common in swampy areas since its main source of food is small crustaceans, it is classified as a common resident in Portugal! This means that I lived in the country all year!👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

IMPORTANCE OF ESTUARIES IN ECOLOGY🔭📸

img_9832.jpg

img_9950.jpg

Estuaries are a mix between fresh and salt water, when we mention fresh water it is because there is generally participation of a river, the rivers constantly transport necessary nutrients for the famous primary producers! When the first producers have a balance in their diet then immediately the body of water is transformed into a great food chain! plants, some fish are vegetarian, birds eat fish and so on!😍🧠🦠🦟🐦🐟🦎

Do you remember when I mentioned about the tides? Well imagine being a pelagic organism like a fish, if you had low tides where would you place your eggs? among the aquatic vegetation right? there you will take refuge! therefore estuaries are excellent for providing refuges for many species, including birds that lay their eggs among mud mounds such as flamengos!😏😏

Hello @oscurity!

I agree with you that the bird figures all over the place make an impact, it really caught my attention and when I saw the metallic figures with their woven dresses I was thrilled by the creativity, I had never seen anything like that.

At first I thought that climate change had produced drought, then when you mention that it is because of the low and high tide I felt relief.

The place seems to be very interesting for bird watching, I don't think there is anything like that here, at least I am not aware of it.

Greetings to L and C
