Hello friends! Today I bring a post that will allow us to know a little about how ornamental greenhouses work, I know that when we refer to a greenhouse we immediately associate it with a plantation or a topic of agriculture! but here in Lisbon there is a controlled greenhouse for ornamental purposes which is designed to see and learn about plants from different ecosystems! For example, in the same space we can see tropical and desert plants! join me on this adventure!🌳🌏🌄🌲

The science of ornamental greenhouses🌳 🧠/ La ciencia de los invernaderos ornamentales🙇‍♂️📚

Today visit the ornamental greenhouse in Lisbon, very famous for its great variety of ecosystems! In Portuguese it is known as: "cold stove", it is nothing more than a space of more than two hectares in size whose function is to exhibit different types of plants that are naturally found in different parts of the planet! Thanks to the greenhouses you can control the solar incidence, rain and humidity of the space, being able to control the required parameters of each plant! which would be impossible in an open place!🧠🌏🌲

Corynocarpus laevigatus🌳🌏

In order to see the potential of ornamental greenhouses, we could take as an example the species: (Corynocarpus laevigatus) which is an endemic plant to "New Zealand" and which is scattered in "coastal" areas, when they grow in quantity they end up forming "forests". coastal", it is not a "dominant" species but we can see it here in the garden!😮🌿

We know that the banana and plantain tree are common in tropical areas, seeing it here in Europe is quite rare! Despite the fact that in Madeira, an island that belongs to Portugal, it is produced naturally in almost all other European countries, it has to be imported again. We see an example of how a greenhouse allows the growth of tropical plants!🍌

"Estufa Fria": cold greenhouse🌳 🧠/ Estufa Fria🙇‍♂️📚

The space is made up of three types of greenhouses or "stoves", cold, hot, sweet, these three occupy almost one and a half hectares in size! within the facilities we have access to the park: "Eduardo VII", the cold greenhouse itself occupies a total of 8100 square meters. Initially it was made as a shelter for plants from all over the world!🤯🌏🌿

Without a heating system🌳🌏

We need to know why it is called a cold greenhouse and it is a controlled space that does not use any heating system, and that it differs from the other two greenhouses because there are no exotic plants in the cold greenhouse! It was built with wooden structures that were used in the 19th century.😮🌿

Wooden ripping that covers the cold greenhouse is used to protect plants from the harsh winter climate and excessive summer heat. These immovable rippings condition the intensity of light, providing an adequate temperature for the development of species originating from various countries or regions such as This is the case of: "Australia, China, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, the Antilles, the Korean Peninsula among others! It is important to highlight that the species cannot be missing from this greenhouse: (Dicksonia antartica) and (Rhododendron spp) or Camellia japonica !🤯🌳🌿

"Estufa Quente": hot greenhouse🌳 🧠/ Estufa caliente🙇‍♂️📚

The interior of the hot greenhouse is an area of 3000 square meters, where tropical plants coexist, of which we can highlight (Coffea arabica, Mangifera indica, Musa spp). It is a place with a higher temperature and with different properties in its soil, here we can see a great variety of exotic plants with beautiful flowers distributed throughout the planet!👩‍🏫🧠🌿

History🌳 🧠/ Historia🙇‍♂️📚

The cold greenhouse complex that existed in the 19th century is still on the premises, previously the land belonged to a quarry where basalt was extracted. Due to the existence of a spring of water that compromised the extraction of stone, work was stopped, the quarry cave was used by a modest gardener to house native plant species from all over the world, which would serve to plant trees in the city when it arrives. the great war the project was suspended and all the plants began to take root in the area!📚👩‍💻🌺🌷

an educational place🌳🌏

In 1926 the architect Raul Carapinha found here a pleasant and green space which inspired him to create a project! It was time to transform that abandoned quarry with some plants into a greenhouse which was completed in 1930 and officially inaugurated two years later.😮🌿

In the 1940s, the entire Eduardo VII park underwent alterations, adopting the form we currently know. The greenhouse was no exception and in addition to the remodeling that the park underwent, a group of lakes were created. In 1975 the Hot, Sweet greenhouse was opened to the public, which were the ideas of the engineer Pulido Garcia. Tropical and equatorial plants would be exhibited here!👩‍💻🌺📚

"Estufa doce" Sweet Greenhouse🌳 🧠/ Estufa dulce🙇‍♂️📚

It is the smallest of all with just about 400 square meters, and it is the house of the Cactaceae, fat plants, so called due to their thick leaves and gelatinous consistency, here we can find its known members among them: (Echinocactus grusonii and Cleistocactus straussii) also Aloe vera.🌿🌺👩‍🏫

beauty and learning🌳 🧠/ Belleza y aprendizaje🙇‍♂️📚

We can see that the greenhouses are well built and rocks, waterfalls and other decorations were used to create a tropical atmosphere straight out of a movie! It is a place where you can sit down to read a book and relax while breathing clean air in the middle of the city, you can request a guide who would go with you in each space of the greenhouse explaining each species and why stoves are important, I personally loved it, no it was an expensive site!👩‍🏫🌵🤯
