The HiPEAC European network of technology experts on computing system has recently released its prospective document: the HiPEAC Vision 2021.
This document is updated every two years and aims at influencing the research community in Europe. It focuses on the computing systems: computer architecture, operating systems, compilers, high performance computing, embedded systems, etc. It is also used by the research agencies in Europe to write their project calls, including Horizon Europe.
This vision makes recommendations:
- Technical recommendations: The technical recommendations can be condensed into the following: going towards 5S.(CPS)². (CPS)² stands for the new generation distributed systems that interact with the physical world: they are Cognitive Cyber and Predictive Physical System of Systems: CCPPSS = (CPS)². 5S stands for the key non-functional requirements: Sober, Secure, Safe, Straightforward and Sustainable. For Europe to lead in 5S.(CPS)², the following research challenges should be tackled.
- Global policy recommendations: open source, moonshot program "Guardian Angels", international competence centre, digital infrastructure, new computing technologies.
- Social recommendations: training, innovation culture, European values and digital ethics.
All these recommendations are detailed and motivated in the 228-page document. It is a very inspiring read, both for researchers in the field and for the public to get a glimpse of the future of computing systems and of the subjects that interest the European researchers (including me as a member of the HiPEAC network 😉).
