Today I will share with you some reflections and experiences related to Ecoefficiency.

Hoy compartiré con ustedes algunas reflexiones y experiencias relacionadas con la Ecoeficiencia.

To begin with, I would like to point out that Ecoefficiency originated in 1992, proposed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), with the aim of promoting and facilitating environmental protection in conjunction with increased productivity (Figure 1).

Para empezar señalo que la Ecoeficiencia tuvo su origen en 1992, propuesta por el Consejo Empresarial Mundial para el Desarrollo Sostenible (WBCSD por sus siglas en inglés), con la finalidad de propiciar y facilitar la protección ambiental conjuntamente con el incremento de la productividad.(Figura 1)

This represents a horizon for harmonising economic and socio-environmental aspects, which some sceptics think incompatible or even utopian.

Esto representa un horizonte para armonizar los aspectos económicos con los socioambientales, que algunos escépticos piensan incompatibles o incluso utópico.

However, not only reflection, but also practice and action are needed if we consider the well-being of humanity and future generations at risk from the increasing impacts on the biosphere and ecosystems of human activities on the planet (Figure 2).

Sin embargo, es necesario no sólo la reflexión, sino también la práctica y acción, si consideramos el bienestar de la humanidad y las generaciones futuras, en riesgo por los crecientes impactos en la biosfera y los ecosistemas por las actividades del hombre en el planeta (Figura 2).

For these reasons, for many years I have been working on research projects, disseminating and participating in activities that promote sustainability and eco-efficiency.

Por estas razones, desde hace muchos años trabajo desarrollando proyectos de investigación, difundiendo y participando en actividades que promuevan la sustentabiblidad y la ecoeficiencia.

Unfortunately, it is necessary to join more efforts for its inclusion as a compulsory subject of the pensum in the engineering degree and in postgraduate studies, as well as the creation of transdisciplinary research lines and the development of public policies for its practical implementation in the institutional, business and family environment.

Lamentablemente es necesario aunar más esfuerzos para su inclusión como materia obligatoria del pensum en la carrera de ingeniería y en los estudios de postgrados, así como también la creación de líneas de investigación transdisciplinaria y desarrollar políticas públicas para su puesta practica en el ámbito institucional, empresarial, y familiar.

What is ecoefficiency?

¿Qué es la ecoeficiencia?

There are many definitions and rationales for Ecoefficiency available, illustratively I point to the following:

Existe gran cantidad de definiciones y fundamentos de la Ecoeficiencia disponibles, de forma ilustrativa señalo el siguiente:

“It reflects the issue of sustainability of resource utilization in manufacturing. Ecoefficiency is achieved by the delivery of competitively priced goods and services that satisfy human needs and improve the quality of life while progressively reducing ecological impacts and resource intensity throughout the life cycle to a level in line with the earth’s estimated carrying capacity”.

“Refleja la cuestión de la sostenibilidad de la utilización de recursos en la fabricación. La ecoeficiencia se consigue mediante la entrega de bienes y servicios a precios competitivos que satisfagan las necesidades humanas y mejoren la calidad de vida, al tiempo que se reducen progresivamente los impactos ecológicos y la intensidad del uso de los recursos a lo largo del ciclo de vida hasta un nivel acorde con la capacidad de carga estimada de la Tierra.”

As can be seen in this definition, the challenge of sustainability is highlighted in the reduction of the use of resources, impacts on the life cycle of products and services, together with increased productivity and "competitive" prices (Figure 3), i.e. an exhortation that considers both the goals of production and profitability and the reduction and improvement of the use of resources and impacts on the environment.

Como se puede apreciar en esta definición se destaca el reto de la sostenibilidad manifiesta en la disminución del uso de recursos, impactos en el ciclo de vida de los productos y servicios, aunado al aumento de la productividad y precios “competitivos”, (Figura 3) es decir, una exhortación que considera tanto las metas de producción y rentabilidad como la reducción y mejora del uso de recursos e impactos en el entorno.

A priori, the above is attractive from an environmental and economic point of view, and has been promoted for almost three decades by prestigious public and private organisations in different countries, with successful experiences, but for many it is neither a priority nor obligatory, so that the reduction of impacts and deterioration of the environment continues, with a growing trend.

A priori, lo expresado anteriormente es atractivo desde el punto de vista ambiental y económico, y ha sido promovido por casi tres décadas por prestigiosas organizaciones públicas y privadas en distintos países, teniéndose experiencias exitosas, pero para muchos no es prioritaria ni obligatoria, por lo que la disminución de los impactos y deterioro del entorno continua, con tendencia creciente.

In this sense, it is important to highlight that for an organisation or even a household is Ecoefficient, commitment, preparation, work, resources and time are needed to evaluate and improve processes and management.

En este sentido es importante destacar, que para una organización o incluso un hogar sea Ecoeficiente, es necesario compromiso, preparación, trabajo, recursos y tiempo, para evaluar y mejorar los procesos y gestión.

I highlight these aspects because a simplistic and/or short-sighted vision of transformation from a current mode "not ecoefficient" to a desired "Ecoefficient" mode is neither objective nor convenient, on the contrary, it tends to create difficulties and false expectations by not having a real and comprehensive overview of the diversity of elements, parties involved as well as their complex interrelationships and interests.

Destaco estos aspectos porque no es objetiva ni conveniente una visión simplista y/o cortoplacista de transformación de un modo actual "no ecoeficiente"a otro deseado ”Ecoeficiente”, por el contrario suele crear dificultades y falsas expectativas al no tener una panorámica real e integral de la diversidad de elementos, partes involucrados así como sus complejas interrelaciones e intereses.

How can it be implemented?

¿Cómo ponerla en práctica?

To be eco-efficient, it is necessary to use methodologies, regulations, procedures and techniques that are consistent with its foundations, i.e. that contribute to obtaining more and better results in a responsible manner, i.e. with less socio-environmental impact.

Para ser ecoeficiente se requiere utilizar metodologías, normativas, procedimientos y técnicas cónsonas a sus fundamentos, es decir que coadyuven a obtener más y mejores resultados de forma responsable, es decir con menores impactos socioambientales.

Among the options used to apply Eco-efficiency, are Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), 5R's Circular Production, Ecodesign, Cleaner Technologies, Environmental Management Systems, Energy Saving, ISO Standards of the 14045 series, all accompanied by the cycle of continuous improvement.

Entre las opciones que se utilizado para aplicar la Ecoeficiencia, se encuentran el Análisis del Ciclo de Vida (ACV), 5R´s Producción Circular, Ecodiseño, Tecnologías más Limpias, Sistemas de Gestión Ambiental, Ahorro Energético, las Normas ISO de la serie 14045, todos estas acompañados por el ciclo de mejoramiento continuo.

Additionally, it is important to highlight the relevance of the use of eco-efficiency indicators, according to the characteristics of each case, for the verification and comparison of the achievements obtained, which are the evidence of the results of the work carried out.

Adicionalmente, es importante destacar la relevancia del uso de indicadores de ecoeficiencia, de acuerdo a las características de cada caso, para la verificación y comparación de los logros obtenidos, que son la evidencia de los resultados del trabajo realizado.

The Ecoefficiency requires conviction, commitment, preparation and perseverance to undertake, manage and implement the necessary changes to make it possible, being necessary to assume the complexity and challenges of sustainability and transdisciplinary work, which implies the integration of efforts of the academic, public and private sectors and citizens. .... there is still a long way to go!

La Ecoeficiencia requieren de convicción, compromiso, preparación y perseverancia para emprender, gestionar y concretar los cambios necesarios para hacerla posible, siendo necesario asumir la complejidad y desafíos de la sustentabilidad y el trabajo transdisciplinario, esto implica la integración de esfuerzos de los sectores académicos, públicos y privados y de los ciudadanos….todavía queda mucho camino por recorrer!

From my own understanding of this post, ecoefficiency is the same as using the planet's resources in a sustainable way. I stand to be corrected though.

Hello, ecoefficiency is an expression of sustainability, they are in the same direction, the harmonisation of socio-environmental and economic dimensions considering also productivity.
