The best part of studying veterinary medicine is being able to observe the wide variety of animals that come into the clinic. Although I focus my learning on small species such as dogs and cats, I find the variety of pets that people have in their homes incredible, ranging from rabbits and guinea pigs to snakes, monkeys and birds.
Some of these pets are called "unconventional pets" because their domestication process is still ongoing. This is a long process, in which many years are needed to be completed and they can belong to the group of domestic animals such as dogs, cats, cows, chickens, etc. Other species are part of the wild animals, therefore, they are not domestic animals nor are in process of domestication, so it is a danger to have them as pets, both for them and for us.
La mejor parte de estudiar medicina veterinaria es la de poder observar la gran variedad de animales que ingresan a la clínica. A pesar que enfoco mi aprendizaje en las pequeñas especies como lo son los perros y gatos, me parece increíble la variedad de mascotas que las personas tienen en sus casas, que van desde conejos y cobayos, hasta serpientes, monos y aves.
Algunas de estas mascotas se denominan "mascotas no convencionales" debido a que su proceso de domesticación sigue en curso. Este es un proceso largo, en el cual se necesitan muchos años para poderse completar y puedan pertenecer al grupo de los animales domésticos como lo son los perros, gatos, vacas, gallinas, etc. Otras especies, forman parte de los animales silvestres, por lo tanto, no son animales domésticos ni están en proceso de domesticación, así que es un peligro tenerlos como mascotas, tanto para ellos como para nosotros.
For example, Araguato monkeys are part of the wildlife of my country, and although it is illegal to keep them as pets, they cannot be denied medical care. In the clinic where I am putting my studies into practice, a veterinarian specialized in wild animals works, he is also a professor at my university, and every clinical case he attends to is always resolved quickly, he is really good at what he does so I always try to learn as much as I can from him.
There is a lot of knowledge that a veterinarian has to have when attending a patient, personally, I think it is necessary that each doctor specializes in his area, although it is true that the veterinarian has to be a comprehensive doctor, it is also important to understand that there are thousands of diseases and treatments that can be found in animals, in addition, these always vary in species, breeds, ages, etc. However, nothing is impossible, because I know many veterinarians who have extensive knowledge in many areas AND they are excellent! But you have to know that it is not an easy road and it requires a long journey and experience.
Por ejemplo, los monos Araguatos son parte de la fauna silvestre de mi país, y a pesar que es ilegal tenerlos como mascotas, igual se les presta la asistencia médica. Así mismo, en la clínica dónde estoy poniendo en práctica mis estudios trabaja un veterinario especialista en animales silvestres, a su vez también es profesor en mi universidad, y cada caso clínico que atiende siempre lo logra resolver rápidamente, de verdad que es muy bueno en lo que hace así que siempre intento aprender lo máximo que pueda de él.
Son muchos los conocimientos que tiene que tener un veterinario a la hora de atender a un paciente, en lo personal, pienso que es necesario que cada médico se especialice en su área, si bien es cierto que el veterinario tiene que ser un médico integral, también es importante entender que son miles las enfermedades y tratamientos que se pueden encontrar en los animales, además, estos siempre varían en las especies, razas, edades, etc. Sin embargo, nada es imposible, debido a que sé de muchos veterinarios que tienen un amplio conocimiento en muchas áreas ¡Y son excelentes! Pero hay que saber que no es un camino fácil y requiere de un largo trayecto y experiencia.
A funny thing about unconventional pets is that each species is handled in a totally different way. In them, we have to be very careful when handling them but we also have to be firm and safe, a clear example can be seen HERE where the veterinarian I am talking about takes care of a very peculiar patient.
Algo curioso de las mascotas no convencionales es que cada especie se maneja de una manera totalmente diferente. En ellos, hay que tener mucho cuidado al manipularlos pero también tenemos que ser firmes y seguros, un claro ejemplo lo pueden ver AQUÍ dónde él veterinario del que les hablo atiende a un paciente muy peculiar.
Another reason why it is good to have extensive knowledge in the care of different animal species is that one never knows that you can enter through the emergency door and it is necessary to be prepared for anything, at least to stabilize the patient and then be treated by a specialist.
Me as a student, I feel that it is a long way to go, at this moment I just stop to observe the procedures because my attention and study, for now, is focused on dogs and cats. Also, at the moment my main area of interest is Geriatrics, however, I continue to experiment with other areas to be 100% sure of my decision.
Otra de las razones por lo que es bueno tener un amplio conocimiento en la atención de las diferentes especies animales, es debido a que uno nunca sabe que pueda ingresar por la puerta de emergencias y es necesario estar preparado para lo que sea, por lo menos para estabilizar al paciente y que luego sea atendido por un especialista.
Para mí como estudiante de verdad siento que es un largo camino por recorrer, en estos momentos solo me detengo a observar los procedimientos, debido a que mi atención y estudio por ahora lo tengo centrado en los perros y gatos. Así mismo, por los momentos mi área de mayor interés es la Geriatría, sin embargo sigo experimentando otras áreas para estar 100% seguro de mi decisión.

Like any university career, we have to have patience and perseverance, the more time and love we invest in our studies, the greater the fruits we will obtain. And no one will take that away from you. For me, learning from these clinical cases is adding new experiences to my life, and it is incredible to be able to interact with other animal species so closely. So you can imagine my excitement with every patient that walks into the office.
Como toda carrera universitaria, tenemos que tener paciencia y perseverancia, mientras más tiempo y cariño le invertimos a nuestros estudios mayores serán los frutos que obtendremos ¡Todo es cuestión de amar lo que haces! Y eso no te lo quitará nadie. Para mí, aprender de estos casos clínicos le va agregando nuevas experiencias a mi vida, y es increíble poder interactuar con otras especies animales de tan cerca ¡Antes solo lo podía ver por Animal Planet! Así que se pueden imaginar mi emoción con cada paciente que entra al consultorio.
