how many times have we found ourselves facing the stairs with the dog? not everyone has the opportunity to have the elevator nor to carry their furry friend for a long time. you go from the dog that is afraid to the one who, regardless of the danger, catapults himself with the same enthusiasm with which we approached the descent from a slide as children point But first of all can all this be done? are the stairs dangerous and at what age can you go up and down? several problems. Have you ever wondered what the dog's difficulties are? and above all how can we help our four-legged companion to deal with this obstacle correctly? Leaving aside the part of his competence to the vet Let's start making some considerations by analyzing the thing starting from the world of the puppy. the first months of life for the dog and represent a period of discoveries and new experiences. we are faced with the important physical development and given the speed with which the animal completes its growth, body awareness and complete control of movements are not always such as to favor the correct approach with the scales point in practice, do the stairs themselves are not problematic if approached with the appropriate precautions. first of all, before starting to go up and down the fateful steps and we can help the dog both physically and mentally, through simple activities to be carried out in everyday life and within the home.
The dog can carry out proprioceptive exercises, the dog does not have the opportunity to see himself in the mirror to understand how it is structured, consequently from the first months it will be necessary to make him do exercises that will promote body awareness.
That word proprioception refers to the faculty of perceiving and recognizing the movement and exact three-dimensional position of the body.
They practice exercises to enable the dog to overcome new obstacles to feel more confident of himself and of the environment in which he lives. as soon as the dog begins to face the stairs it will be necessary to have coordination, control and balance to avoid possible accidents.
Another exercise that will help your dog improve stair preparation will be teaching him to walk backwards. Recreating a sort of lane in the house using for example some chairs we will position ourselves in front of the dog and take two steps towards him. As soon as the dog retreats even a few steps we will reward him with a treat. We could from the beginning repeat the verbal request "back" whenever we push him back. Parallel to the steps taken towards the dog we will also propose a gesture with the hand that is different from the one used to ask for "sit".
