Como ya he mencionado en otros posts, tengo una perra que adopté de mi comunidad cuando mi mascota anterior falleció. Le llamaban “Princesa” pero yo prefería llamarla negra. Poco a poco se fue ganando nuestro cariño y la terminamos metiendo en la casa. Eso fue hace unos 2 años, y desde entonces, pese a que la situación económica a veces se torna un poco apretada, tratamos de cuidar de ella lo mejor posible y de nuestro gato también. Fue por ello que nos preocupamos mi papá y yo hace un par de meses que la empezamos a notar “extraña”, es decir, empezó a mostrar conductas poco comunes como no querer pararse casi, no querer comer, y también a echarse dentro de mi cuarto, cosa que nunca hace. La estuvimos observando y notamos que la zona del abdomen se le veía hinchada y tensa. Fue entonces que decidimos buscar un veterinario que la viera con urgencia. Como estaba delicada y no queríamos que pasara el estrés de estar sacándola de la casa, conseguimos una veterinaria que hacía consultas a domicilio, así que la llamamos.
Apenas llegó y la examinó nos dijo que tenía el hígado bastante inflamado, y que tenía mucho dolor, por su lenguaje corporal al palparla (no querer moverse, jadear y de momento apretar la mandíbula) Nos dijo que la causa más probable era una enfermedad transmitida por las garrapatas llama “Ehrlichia” que principalmente causa afecciones del hígado y los riñones entre otras cosas. También notó una ligera infección en ojos y oídos que se podía deber a la misma enfermedad mencionada, ya que esta debilitaba el sistema inmune. El problema con la Ehrlichia es que no se puede curar, solo se puede controlar con antibióticos y realizar exámenes de sangre con frecuencia para monitorear el estado de la mascota, ya que ante cualquier muestra de síntomas, se debe atacar nuevamente con antibióticos.
Por último la veterinaria le extrajo sangre para realizarle los análisis necesarios y quedó en avisarnos el tratamiento al tener los resultados. De momento nos indicó que debíamos darle de comer y le recetó algunas medicinas para el dolor y vitaminas. A todas estas teníamos un dinero que íbamos a invertir en varias cosas para empezar a vender, ya que mi papá estaba sin trabajo y yo gano 100$ al mes, lo cual no es poco pero tampoco alcanza para cubrir todos los gastos de la casa, de las mascotas y de nosotros. Todo lo que teníamos en ese momento, tuvimos que gastarlo porque el pago de la veterinaria fueron 55$ y las medicinas que le compramos ese día mas la comida fueron alrededor de 25$. Afortunadamente mi pareja nos ayudo con muchos gastos y luego incluso hicimos una rifa para poder volver a comprar las medicinas que se le acabaron y se le debían seguir dando.
Un par de días después, al tener los resultados de los análisis, la veterinaria nos confirmó que tenía Erhlichia, y que además tenía severamente afectado el hígado. Nuevamente nos receto más medicamentos, vitaminas y suplementos, que se le debían dar entre 3 semanas y 1 mes (de primera mano ya fueron 40$ mas ahi). Adicionalmente nos dijo que debíamos realizarle una ecografía abdominal con urgencia (20$ más…) Así que empezamos a preguntar y realmente hay muy pocos sitios en mi ciudad donde tienen ese aparato, de las opciones que encontramos 2 no estaban disponibles ese día ni al siguiente, lo peor del caso es que solo 1 (de los que no estaba disponible) podia realizarlo a domicilio, y prácticamente todos los consultorios veterinarios atienden hasta el mediodía o la 1 pm. Ese día conseguimos la última opción justo cerca de esa hora, así que tuve que pedirle el favor al papá de una amiga que ayudara a mi papá a llevar a la perra al sitio (porque yo estaba en el trabajo) y logramos que la atendieran. Posteriormente al tener los resultados de esa ecografía, se los enviamos a la veterinaria y observó que además del hígado inflamado también tenía afecciones en los riñones y el páncreas, por lo que añadió un par de medicamentos más para completar el tratamiento.
Fueron unos días bastante fuertes, no podía dormir bien pendiente de la perra, ya que le costaba pararse y respiraba muy agitada. Había que sacarla cada tantas horas para que pudiera hacer sus necesidades ya que no se quería parar para nada. Lo único que pensaba cada día era en lo mucho que deseaba que se mejorara, y que estuviera bien. Afortunadamente es una perra fuerte y con el pasar de los días fue evolucionando y mostrando signos de mejoría, ya se movía más y se notaba de mejor ánimo y apetito. Nos alegramos bastante, por fin pudimos respirar más tranquilos, también se le había reducido considerablemente la inflamación del abdomen.
Ya se encuentra recuperada e incluso por la dieta que tuvimos que ponerle diría que bajó un poco de peso, ya que antes se veía gordita y ahora está fitness, se ve bastante saludable. El día de ayer fue de nuevo la veterinaria a la casa para extraerle sangre otra vez y realizarle por segunda vez los análisis y así verificar que ya esté bien por completo. Esperamos que sea así, aunque de ahora en adelante siempre tendrá que salir acompañada y tendrá que mantener una alimentación específica con suficiente proteína y vegetales.

Las mascotas se convierten en parte importante de nuestras vidas y en muchos casos los amamos como si fueran nuestros hijos, por eso hay que estar muy pendiente de sus conductas y llevarlos a un veterinario si notamos algo fuera de lo común, muchos animalitos fallecen por enfermedades no atendidas, o por falta de cuidados o nutrición adecuada. Debemos siempre cuidarlos lo mejor que podamos. Un saludo a todos!

As I have mentioned in other posts, I have a dog that I adopted from my community when my previous pet passed away. They called her "Princess" but I preferred to call her Black. She gradually grew on our affection and we ended up bringing her into the house. That was about 2 years ago, and since then, even though the economic situation sometimes gets a little tight, we try to take care of her as best we can and our cat as well. That's why my dad and I got worried a couple of months ago when we started to notice her "strange", that is, she started to show unusual behaviors like not wanting to stand up much, not wanting to eat, and also to lie down inside my room, something she never does. We were observing her and noticed that her abdomen was swollen and tense. It was then that we decided to look for a veterinarian to see her urgently. Since she was delicate and we didn't want her to go through the stress of taking her out of the house, we found a veterinarian who makes house calls, so we called her.
As soon as she arrived and she examined her, she told us that her liver was quite inflamed, and that she was in a lot of pain, because of her body language when examined (not wanting to move, panting and clenching her jaw at the moment) She told us that the most likely cause was a tick-borne disease called "Ehrlichia" which mainly causes liver and kidney problems among other things. She also noticed a slight infection in the eyes and ears that could be due to the same disease mentioned above, as it weakened the immune system. The problem with Ehrlichia is that it cannot be cured, it can only be controlled with antibiotics and frequent blood tests to monitor the pet's condition, since at any sign of symptoms, it must be attacked again with antibiotics.
Finally the veterinarian took blood to perform the necessary tests and agreed to let us know the treatment when she had the results. At the moment she told us what we should feed her and prescribed some medicines for the pain and vitamins. We had some money that we were going to invest in several things to start selling, since my dad was unemployed and I earn $100 a month, which is not little but it is not enough to cover all the expenses of the house, the pets and us. Everything we had at that time, we had to spend it because the vet fee was $55 and the medicines we bought her that day plus the food was around $25. Fortunately my partner helped us with many expenses and later we even did a raffle to be able to buy back the medicines that she ran out of and had to continue giving her.
A couple of days later, when we got the results of the analysis, the vet confirmed that she had Erhlichia, and that her liver was severely affected. Again, she prescribed more medications, vitamins and supplements, to be given between 3 weeks and 1 month (at first hand it was already 40$ more there). Additionally she told us that we had to perform an abdominal echography urgently (20$ more...) So we started to ask and there are really very few places in my city where they have that device, of the options we found 2 were not available that day or the next, the worst of the case is that only 1 (of those that was not available) could perform it at home, and practically all veterinary consultorys are open until noon or 1 pm. That day we found the last option right around that time, so I had to ask a friend's dad to help my dad take the dog to the place (because I was at work) and we were able to get her attended. Later when we got the results of that scan, we sent them to the vet and she noticed that besides the inflamed liver she also had kidney and pancreas conditions, so she added a couple of more medications to complete the treatment.
It was quite a tough days,I couldn't sleep well while watching the dog, since it was hard for her to stand up and she was breathing very agitated. We had to take her out every few hours so that she could relieve herself, as she could not go out on her own. All I could think about every day was how much I wanted her to get better and be well. Fortunately she is a strong dog and with the passing of the days she was evolving and showing signs of recovery, she was already moving more and she was in better mood and appetite. We were very happy, at last we could breathe easier, also the swelling in her abdomen had reduced considerably.
She is already recovered and even because of the diet we had to put her on, I would say that she lost a little weight, because before she looked chubby and now she looks quite healthy. Yesterday the vet went again to the house to take her blood once more and to make a second blood test to verify that she is completely fine. We hope so, although from now on she will always have to go out accompanied and will have to maintain a specific diet with enough protein and vegetables.
She doesn't like it at all when the vet comes, hahaha.
Pets become an important part of our lives and in many cases we love them as if they were our children, so we must be very aware of their behavior and take them to a veterinarian if we notice anything out of the ordinary, many animals die from unattended diseases, or lack of care or proper nutrition. We must always take care of them as best we can. Greetings to all!
