(ESP/ENG) Visita al veterinario urgente por la pérdida repentina de dos colmillos de mi gato / Urgent vet visit for the sudden loss of two fangs of my cat 😿😭🦷

in Hive Pets3 years ago

Hi all! Yesterday was a terrible day for me as a cat lover, everything happened but until this morning I felt too sad. I have a black cat, a beautiful panther named Ikki, I have uploaded her visits to the vet in this community, relating how her case with bilateral cryptorchidism is going. All his visits have been scheduled, with no emergencies ahead, so I never expected to have to run to the vet for a completely different issue than his clinical picture. I tell you how it all happened:

It turns out that a week ago Ikki suddenly had a fever, he became depressed, to the point of not wanting to eat or drink water. As the weather was very cold and in several of his visits to the garden, it had drizzled (I immediately dried him when I saw him enter), I assumed that his discomfort was due to a cat flu. As she did not want to disturb him, she only checked him to check his temperature, let him rest, gave him wet food and gave him water with a syringe. At times he improved and again fell with a break. I was waiting before taking him to the vet because I had just taken him recently and I was recovering from the economic blow as who says, apart from that I had already had experience with my sister's cat, who has had the flu and has been cured perfectly. But there was something that did not add up to me: I had never seen Ikki sneeze. And that was a very noticeable symptom in my sister's cat when she got sick with the flu.

As I saw him in very good spirits yesterday morning, to the point of eating his croquettes, I felt more relieved. It was time to give him water at night and he carefully placed the syringe on him, so as not to disturb him (apart from the fact that he did not like this method of drinking and he became very restless), but since he could not see what he was doing and wanted to prevent him from He stubborn and began to move (because he already had energy and it hurt me), I brought the syringe closer to him and raised his lip ... that's when the drama began ... He did not have his upper fang, the final one! I immediately saw the other side of him. He didn't have it either! I went into a crisis, he had already changed his baby teeth. What had happened? The first thing that came to mind was that he was so ill that his teeth were falling out. I started crying, it was too late to go to the vet. Ikki was very calm, he even dared to drink water from his pot by himself (and drank a lot), that calmed me a little, that and that he ate normally. But he wouldn't stop crying. They were his ultimate upper fangs and they were gone. What was to become of him?

I contacted my friend and told him that we would go to take Ikki to the vet early. I did not sleep at all last night, I kept feeling sad about this that was happening to my dear cat. As soon as dawn came I contacted the vet, announcing that I would go. The moments between leaving and walking to the site were quite mortifying, I was afraid of the doctor's diagnosis.

When we arrived we had to wait a bit, as we had two patients ahead of us. One of them was a poor kitten who was preparing for an emergency surgery, apparently she had given birth recently and one of the babies had been left inside, causing the cat's discomfort since it was decomposing inside the poor my girl. The other was a dog that suffered from arthritis and was receiving his dose of injections, the poor man was scared, the human mother was holding him and trying to make him feel safe and relieve his pain.

When Ikki's turn came (one of the vets was preparing everything for the cat's operation), he was scared as always. With a slightly cracked voice I told the vet what had happened and he checked his muzzle. He confirmed one of my suspicions: Ikki had broken those fangs days ago, mentioning that he was almost healthy and indeed, they looked better than yesterday. It was then that I understood that Ikki's discomfort had not been a simple common cold, but the symptoms of the loss of his fangs. He injected her with anti-inflammatory and antibiotic for prevention and prescribed an antibiotic. He told me that maybe he had bitten something and that had happened to him, although the truth is I don't know what it could have been. A friend of my boyfriend told us that one of his cats lost the same fangs in a fight. But in the case of Ikki, I don't know why. I just didn't realize at the time what was happening.

(En cuanto se dio cuenta de que podía volver al transportador, no dudó en hacerlo 😞 / As soon as he realized that he could return to the transporter, he did not hesitate to do so 😞)

The vet told me that Ikki would have no problem eating his usual food. The only thing is that I must be aware if there is any change in the coloration of what remains of the teeth (the gums were a bit swollen), but that of the rest, it is not necessary to do anything else. We left for the vet to enter the operating room with his colleague to tend to the poor kitten whose life was hanging by a thread.

When I got home I left Ikki to rest and went to get the medicine, luckily I got it at a reasonable price. We already gave him the first dose. Luckily it seems that the taste is not bad because he did not resist taking it.

All this that happened was very surprising for us. Every time I see Ikki it pains me a bit to think that he no longer has his upper fangs. What reassures me is that he has already recovered part of his appetite and energy, he has not had a fever again. Now it's just a matter of him adjusting to his new bite and helping him make it as easy as possible for him.

Be aware of your pets and when you see them sick, check them well to see if the reason for their discomfort is visible and they can act in time. Luckily it seems that Ikki's fangs will not cause him more discomfort when he heals completely, but if it had been something more serious, it would have been too late to act. If possible, see the vet immediately for any abnormal behavior. Thank you very much for reading, we will be informing you.

Until next time!

Aww, poor Ikki! No wonder he didn't want to eat if his teeth hurt. Yuan lost one of his fangs several months ago, the whole thing fell completely out, root and all. Apparently it isn't that uncommon and he seems to have recovered just fine, but it freaked me out at the time, too. Only in his case I knew it was coming because it was loose for a week or two beforehand, and then I found it on the floor:

Yuans fang.jpg

I'm glad you were able to get help for Ikki and I hope he feels better! <3

Yes it's okay and he lost a lot of weight those days 🥺 but he's already eating again so I hope Ikki looks so chubby soon ... Oh my god! But that fang fell off completely !! I hope it didn't bother him. What did the vet tell you about it? Poor Yuan ... In Ikki's case we suspect that someone, some evil person has cut them off (because lately Ikki had been going further than usual, black cats are highly sought after by people with bad intentions 😥) all this to me He got very bad, Ikki is already super better today, he eats, drinks water and has that little face of his as radiant as always, but we are not going to let him leave without supervision, that's why he has been very upset since yesterday, because we are taking him out with harness ... But yes, in short, he is already better and I will do my best so that his stay at home, despite being stricter, is the least stressful for him 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Oh my Gods, that's scary if someone did that to him, I hope not. I'm sure he can get used to staying closer to home. He's young and they're pretty adaptable when young! Yuan walks with me in the courtyard (with a leash if I started it; if he darts out the door and I follow him, without, but we stay in the same area. He likes to walk around and roll on the concrete and sniff other apartments' door mats and peek out underneath the wall at the courtyard below, but that's it. And if he hears a dog in the courtyard, he will RUN back to our apartment door asking to go in) or hangs out on the balcony, and he seems happy with that for outside time. The shelter said he was a stray before I adopted him but he never tries to run away; I think he likes his inside life. :)
Maggie, meanwhile, has no interest in outside time beyond looking out the window. Noisy humans with cars and pavement and dogs, who would want to go out there? ;)
Both my kitties are older and apparently losing a fang sometimes happens in older cats (Yuan is 13 now). But he's the first where I saw it happen (I've had 4 cats). I was told by the vet that Deidre (my kitty who crossed the bridge several years ago) had lost some of her back teeth when she was older but I didn't know it until she was getting a checkup and I didn't find them. I myself have had a lot of teeth problems and I know it can hurt so I hope it didn't hurt them but it's hard to tell with cats, they hide it when they don't feel well so unless it's obvious like they're not eating or hiding away or something, you don't always know. :( And then you go to the vet and it's like WHAT SHE'S MISSING SOME TEETH and I felt really bad, but she seemed to recover just fine as she kept eating and everything. Yuan didn't stop eating when his fang was loose at all, either. I took that as a good sign. <3

The truth is, yes, he is very normal and I am the one who walks with the drama 😅 what if I am afraid to let him go out alone as before, so that is over heh heh ... Wow, good that Yuan will adapt to living indoors! As well as he behaves, he is also Ikki, he cannot hear a loud noise because he enters the house quickly heh heh Maggie if he does not have a bad life, he knows that everything good is at home and it is not necessary to go out 😊 I think it is easier When you have a window for them, they look and get distracted seeing what happens outside, the bad thing is that where we live, the windows are very badly located, too high and not accessible at all for a feline to feel close 😔 I didn't know what of the teeth in older cats! 😲 although of course, it is understandable ... I had a cat that arrived at the age of 7 (he died of depression, because he was very attached to my mother and she had to travel for several months and that made him sick) and at that age he had a good teeth, I never had the opportunity to see a cat lose its teeth like this 😶 poor thing, the difficult thing is that, they do not show their discomfort and one suffers when realizing that they have been feeling this way and one without knowing it 😫 For them it is something natural and they adapt over time, but for us the trauma is greater because they are our spoiled ones and we want them to always be in the best way I'm glad that Yuan is all brave 💖

Is it possible to make shelves so he can climb to the window? I make mine out of scrap materials, but I still have to buy the brackets to put them on the wall. Like these:

Cat shelves.jpg

They are mostly pieces of wood from an old broken bookshelf, bits of carpet or shelf liner meant for kitchen cupboards, screws, and the brackets. I don't know if that would work for your situation, though!

I am lucky that I have some good windows for them. We are on the second floor so they have a high up view.

Maggie 41 (2).jpg

And yeah, I agree: the cats are more brave than I am when they are sick, I am all worried and feeling bad that I want to make it all better. They probably think I am full of drama. <3

aaaaaaaaawwww !!! What a beautiful space for them to climb! 😍😍😍😍 Yes, I would like to be able to do something like this to Ikki, but since we are living I would have to ask if we can make holes in the wall, because you know, the owners are usually delicate with changes in the structures 😅 I have to find the way to create a space like that, I loved it 🤔 So cute Yuan looking out the window! It fascinates me when cats are in their gossip mode 🤭 Thank you for showing me the space of your kitties 🥰🥰

Yeah, landlords. Sigh! I rent too but I put holes in the walls anyway. They are supposed to paint in between tenants as a rule and I've been here for almost 14 years, it's pretty tame on the "damage" scale, I think. :)

That's actually an older picture of Maggie in the window, back when she was a little chonky and not the skinny mini she is now. ^_^
