Enzo's first day at home after the surgery

in Hive Pets3 years ago

Yesterday was Enzo's emergency surgery to stabilize his broken wrists, more particularly to fix both carpal bones.
It was a complicated surgery because, apparently, the carpal bone had been fragmented in 4 places in his right hand while in his left hand, although the injury was minor, the cartilage and the tendinous fiber that surrounds the joint was covered with multiples and infinity of pieces of bone too.
Being such a young dog, the traumatologist has decided to give nature a chance and choose to trust that the dog will recover without adding mechanical elements by using an arthrodesis.
The solution after the surgery therefore has been to immobilize both legs with a special bandage including a splint.
Today I went to look for him and I brought him home. You don't know how happy Enzo was to get home even though he was still half sedated from morphine.
We have assembled a "King-size" type bed for dogs with a replacement mattress that we had at home and some waterproof cover.

I am in direct contact with the traumatologist to follow his evolution day by day, the plan is that he recovers naturally in a period of 5 or 6 weeks and that he can lead a normal life but if things do not work, he may need another surgery much more drastic that would imply the perpetual locking of the joint which I hope does not happen
The poor animal is in very intense pain and although the pain relievers are very strong, Enzo continues to moan from time to time.
Let's see how he evolves, I hope for the best.

Wow, just came across this post. Sorry to hear that.

How is Enzo doing now ? A few days later

Yesterday was more or less ok. Today seems he has more pains...I have to check with the vet what to do now

Shame hopefully Enzo gets well soon, I can only imagine the pain and being unable to do things he normally does freely

Let’s hope for the best, day by day will see

We all are hoping for the best mate! He is going to pass through this! my best wishes to him.

Here in the clinic where I do my internships, a 4 months puppy came bc a fracture of his tibia, the owner accidentally stepped on it. The thing is that the vet in charge did the same thing and before trying surgery, he first made him a bandage and let it stick by itself. Sure, in your case it's a little different bc the carpal bones were fragmented, but everything in medicine it's possible, trust in your vet! in the end hopefully everything it's going to be okay.

English is not my best language but hopes it's understandable!

I hear you! And don’t worry your English is perfect!
Confío plenamente en mi veterinario. Es uno de los mejores traumatologos de España 😉

That sounds like a horrific surgery. I hope Enzo has a speedy and complete recovery and won't need the additional surgery.

Thanks for your support

Good luck for his convalescence, hope it goes well, and Enzo's fully recovered soon.
I can imagine how happy he must have felt when you brought him back home with his family pack.
