Caturday on Saturday: Superstitions about cats😺😸😻😼😽🙀

image.png

Hi, my dear friends!

Every time I think what other information about cats I could show in my Caturday posts.

Today I decided to talk about superstitions (of course, not seriously, because superstitions cannot be taken seriously).

Cats are considered essential companions of everything magical and mysterious, especially black cats. This is probably because cats have a fairly independent nature and, moreover, they are able to ingeniously disappear or penetrate enclosed spaces. There is even a joke that a cat is a liquid 😁

As companion animals for humans for thousands of years, cats play all sorts of mythological roles. In ancient Egypt, cats were revered; today, Americans collectively keep more than 81 million cats as pets.

The most common superstition about cats in my country is that

A black cat crosses your path to misfortune or bad luck

image.png

Nonsense, of course! The animal just goes about his or her business!

So why keep a black cat out of your path? Most likely, this superstition arises from old beliefs in witches and their animal familiars, which were often said to take the form of domestic animals like cats.

Actually, this is where my knowledge of superstitions about cats ended. Further study of what they write about it on the Internet, led me to the conclusion that many superstitions or beliefs about cats are not only negative, but also quite positive or neutral. In addition, they may differ significantly.

Being a cat lady can help you get married (Feeding a cat from your shoe will improve your love life )

image.png

Although pop culture has turned cats into a symbol of eternal singledom, according to one book on Pennsylvania German tradition, cats can help a woman who is anxious to get married. All she has to do is “feed the cat from her shoe,” although the superstition doesn’t say what’s supposed to happen next—or how to get the uneaten cat food out of the shoe.

It came as a surprise to me too! In our culture, a woman with many cats is most often a lonely spinster. Although... I have many girlfriends who have several cats and are quite happy in marriage or partnership. 😉

Cats are solitary animals who only deign to accept love from humans

image.png

This myth says dogs are pack animals who smother their humans with slobbery kisses while cats are remote, aloof creatures who snub their people’s overtures of affection. In fact, both cats and dogs make loving pets who need plenty of human attention. They just show it differently. Cats purr, give kitty kisses, rub alongside a leg, and love to curl up on a warm lap. Most cats also enjoy the companionship of another pet in the house when possible.

The independence of cats is really a myth. Yes, they can act distant, but... only when they are sure of your love. It's more of a naughty child. For the first time, I realized that cats really need to communicate with a person in a cat shelter. Dozens of cats meowed, caressed and tried very hard to please. I rejoice when I see a slightly lazy and imposing cat, it means that she or he is doing well.

Cats always despise dogs.

image.png

Everyone knows cats and dogs are sworn enemies for all time, right? Both fairy tales and proverbs (fight like cats and dogs) tell us so. Actually, many cats and dogs get along famously.
While the two species aren’t natural allies,an easy-going dog and a friendly cat can spend their days harmoniously together.

image.png

No, no, no, no! And I say this with complete responsibility. Yes, dogs and cats can clash, but they can be true friends. Our cat Katya washes the muzzles and ears of our dogs, and they are always ready to warm and protect her.

Black cats protect fishermen at sea

image.png

Many superstitions wrongly identify black cats as being bad luck, which is particularly sad when you consider that they are often overlooked by potential new owners. In fact, this is why we have National Black Cat Day on 27 October every year, to show our monochrome moggies a bit of extra love! While this superstition paints black kitties in a more positive light, as protectors and good luck charms, they would probably be happier on dry land rather than at sea!

I can't say anything about this, but I like the idea!

A kitten born in May will be troublesome

image.png

Although it is towards the start of ‘kitten season’ (the majority of kittens are born between April and September), there’s no reason why kittens will be anymore mischievous in May compared to other months. Young kittens are naturally curious and playful, so they’ll always need some supervision to make sure they don’t get into trouble.

I think it's more of a metaphor that says that everything should happen on time.

Cats always land on their feet

image.png

More often than not, cats will land on their feet when they fall from a height. This is because they have what is called a ‘righting reflex’, whereby they’re able to twist around very quickly in the air when falling. They also have very flexible backbones, which help them in doing this.
But sadly, this isn’t always the case. Every year our animal hospitals treat cats which have fallen from great heights, often out of windows several storeys high. Some make a recovery, but devastatingly, lots don’t make it. And some of those who don’t succumb to their injuries do suffer life-changing damage that can be expensive to treat for owners without pet insurance.
We recommend keeping windows closed, and during the summer months fixing mesh to windows and balconies to prevent cats from falling out.

Here I can only add that you should not only keep the windows closed, but also use special protection for cats if you open them for ventilation. Cats get into trouble just as often as other animals, and don't expect that

Cats have nine lives

image.png

Like the rest of us, cats only have one life – so where does the saying ‘cats have nine lives’ come from? Nobody really knows the origin of this myth, exactly, but there are a number of possibilities – from William Shakespeare to ancient Egypt.
In the play Romeo and Juliet, the bard refers to the nine lives of cats. Meanwhile an old proverb of unknown origin claims: “A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays and for the last three he stays.” In ancient Egypt, cats were treated as sacred animals and were worshiped as divine creatures with psychic or supernatural powers, so some think the myth could have originated there as it fits in with their view of cats.

But, it’s more than likely that the myth has developed over time due to cats’ ability to get themselves out of sticky situations, with their agility and dexterity. Over time, moggies have survived falls from great heights and even earthquakes, so it’s not surprising they have earned their nine lives title.

Cats suck the breath of newborns

image.png

One of the strangest cat superstitions out there states that cats steal or “suck” the breath of newborn babies. Some theorize that this superstition arose out of the Hebrew story of Lilith, Adam’s first wife, who was kicked out of Eden for not submitting to her husband and doomed to walk the earth as a vampire and/or demon. It was believed that Lilith would sometimes take the form of a black cat (here we go again!) and rob the breaths of sleeping children in the night.
While we know cats are capable of no such thing, it is possible that primitive folks found cats sleeping with newborns in their cradles—cats may have been attracted to the babies’ heat or the smell of milk on their breath—and assumed the worst.
On the other hand, a different superstition states that if you put a cat in the empty cradle of newlyweds, a baby will soon arrive. Go figure…

When moving into a new home, letting the cat enter first will bring good luck

image.png

While your moggy will certainly be curious about their new territory, it will probably bring you better luck if you go in first and get everything set up for them before they arrive. Moving your cat into a new house requires a bit of planning to make sure they settle in well

And in conclusion, I want to say that you should not take everything that people say too literally. Cats are all different, just like any other pets, just like people. If you have adopted a cat, just love it and take care of it.

Happy Caturday!

Sort:

Cats are the ideal pets for humans. I will buy a cat when my house is available.

As usual it has been a pleasure to read you, I laughed a lot with the belief of the food in the shoe, because before I finished reading I also thought about how to remove what was left in the shoe especially if we talk about wet breath, I would throw away the shoe without thinking much, the black cats is a topic are much more difficult to give up for adoption, That makes me very angry because they are so beautiful, lay superstitions funny, but others have greatly harmed the cats, because there are still many who like to believe bullshit and do not care to investigate a little, as those who say that cat hairs leave women sterile and that toxoplasmosis is transmitted by cat hair, please.

People definitely have a lot of legends about cats! What we need are more positive ones :)
